sodomizer: Legalizing marijuana increases the number of blown-out losers.

Not really.

A big part of the loser thing with pot isn't the drug, but the problem with the drug in society.

Pot heads spend all their time, money, and effort to find and smoke weed safely. This means maintaining a certain lifestyle. This lifestyle keeps them from pursuing opportunities that might otherwise increase their lot in life as it would take them away from pot. A stigma that does not affect other drugs that don't stay in your system for ages.

Even if it was legalized tomorrow and the entire country became a nation of potheads, so what? The US was founded as a place where we can come and do what we want to do. That was a stated goal. Not having the biggest military or the biggest economy or the most guns. It was about freedom.

sodomizer: While there are some exceptions, potheads on the whole are useless.

Some of them were useless before they became potheads, but smoking pot seems like an activity that clusters around uselessness, laziness, dysfunction, crime, stupidity and listening to boring jazz-fusion music with repetitive lyrics.

You go ahead and legalize it in your community and take the chance that it might lure ordinary people into self-destructive lifestyles.

I'd prefer to see it remain illegal, and for all the drug addicts here to move over there to be with you.

I think you don't know many people who smoke pot.

I don't have a problem with legalizing weed, I have a problem with people soapboxing on both sides. There is a concept called compromise, and yet another one called moderation that people just don't seem to comprehend.

That's just stupid.

You can't compromise a binary. Weed is either illegal, or it isn't. There is no room for compromise there.

Once we get to legal, you can start talking about under what circumstances it's legal. But with it being schedule I, there is no compromise available.

sodomizer: ghare: I've met LOTS of losers who weren't potheads.

Me too, but that's an entirely separate issue.

There are lots of losers.

There may also be an increased-loser affect caused by marijuana use.

Legalizing marijuana increases the number of blown-out losers.

So you are in favor of a big government that controls people's behavior and punishes them for harmless activities pursued in private. For their own good.
Got it.
And there is some kind of new emotional state known as "increased-loser." That part is less clear.

There are lots of legal substances that are already sold in stores that lure ordinary people into self-destructive lifestyles. Alcohol is by far more addictive and destructive to your body on the long term (Liver cancer, throat cancer, Cirrosis) and causes millions of people a year to seek treatment for abuse/dependency.

Lets re-word your post...

While there are some exceptions, drinkers on the whole are useless.

Some of them were useless before they started drinking, but drinking alcohol seems like an activity that clusters around uselessness, laziness, dysfunction, crime, stupidity and listening to boring jazz-fusion music with repetitive lyrics.

You go ahead and legalize it in your community and take the chance that it might lure ordinary people into self-destructive lifestyles.

You do have a pretty valid point. Legalizing pot would probably take a considerable chunk out of our GDP. I know plenty of smokers that are contributors to society, but I have never met a complete loser that wasn't also a pothead.

I've met LOTS of losers who weren't potheads. They were all drunks. Which is legal.

Three reasons that cannabis should be legalized. One it will bankrupt the drug cartels. Two it will bankrupt the pharmaceutical industry. Three it will stimulate the food and beverage industry and create jobs. TADA!

Exactly. Speaking of which, they completely left out (or I missed in my skimming) maybe THE drug with the highest social cost - nicotine. Nicotine is more addictive, chemically, than heroin.

If there had been a corporate interest in, and takeover of, the marijuana industry back in the 1700-1800's, you can bet we'd be buying out of vending machines or at every gas station.

Trivia Fact: The Nations' first drug law came in the late 1800's and was against only the smoking of Opium - it was designed to discourage Chinese from coming to the U.S. and taking away U.S. jobs building the railroads. Most opium was ingested in liquid "laudanum" potions usually used by white women to ease monthly symptoms. That remained legal.

ArkPanda: There's a medical marijuana initiative on the ballot this year that I'm probably going to vote against. If you want to push for legalization that's fine but California has shown that "medical" marijuana is a huge crock of shiat.

So you'll deny cancer patients and chronic pain suffers something far less addictive and more helpful than oxycotin because of some losers who take it for "stress"?

Most people in our methadone clinics at my hospital are not heroin addicts, it's oxy and other pain pill addicts. That shiat is dangerous. My Aunt was on Oxy for years after a 50lbs box fell on her head and she had to have a bunch of spine and neck surgeries. Now she's addicted and is in treatment.

Yes hippies claim MJ is a cure-all but there was certain instances were it has been scientifically proven that it works

Anyone with half a brain jumped on the medical marijuana bandwagon because of the profit. Most of these people believe it should be legal and they are selling it because of the huge demand. The same thing will be happening with decriminalization. Not everyone can grow for themselves. Not everyone has the money to startup with all the proper equipment to create the Super high quality that will be getting sold above everything else.

You go ahead and legalize it in your community and take the chance that it might lure ordinary people into non-missionary sexual positions.

"Compromise" isn't a position. Its a thing people with actual positions do because they have to work together. If you make "compromise" the core of your platform you'll sound really smart and wise and pwogwessive and have lots of oppertunities to act smug but you'll end up passing a healthcare bill written by the heritage foundation get condemned as a socialist for it anyway.
