It does seem that there are people that are paid to assess these situations and make plans. Granted, this is a mess but they had some warning.

Imagine for a second your home is invaded. Your defenses are overcome, the police are uncalled, and no one is expecting to hear from you for awhile. The intruder subdues you and you're all tied up, gagged, and just for metaphor literally bent over a barrel. The intruder says "Now I'm going to go steal all your jewelry and other valuables."

What's your plan? Every contingency has failed and things are going to get inexorably worse for awhile. What is your plan at that time? What CAN your plan be? It's hard enough to stop the tide when there isn't record flooding and you have weeks to prepare. What can you possibly do but standby and stay frosty with the units you've got and hope you don't need any of them.

Fubini: Bathia_Mapes: davidphogan: What's the simultaneous Newsflashes on the main page at the same time record? Are the admins just trolling us now?

Not sure if it's a record, but a lot of major events are occurring in NYC. Flooding bad enough that it's make it extremely difficult for firefighters to get to a house fire in Queens. The explosion at a Con-Ed substation. Evacuation of NYU Medical Center after their backup generators failed, this being done despite flooded streets. Some of the patients being evacuated are newborns from NICU (neonatal intensive care unit). They're especially fragile since some of them were born prematurely.

A lot of major events, but they all fall under the category of "There's a hurricane."

House fires, power substations exploding, and medical evacuations are rare, but not unheard of events. If they were happening in isolation from NYC and the hurricane very few people would care other than "That's a shame." or "That's a cool video." I admit that evacuating a whole hospital due to adverse conditions is a pretty big deal, but it happened in Katrina too.

I'm not trying to say that all these events are insignificant or not newsworthy, but in my mind a news-flash is supposed to be breaking brand-new news, not multiple aspects of the same news unless it marks a significant shift in the news narrative (e.g. person goes from being near-death to dying, a trial verdict is returned, a water-hurricane turns into a fire-hurricane, etc.)

This is all pretty subjective, though it does give off the air of New York being somehow more important that the other places that bad things happen.

Do you have any idea about the population density in this area?

I fail to see any issue with that pizza.

Dude, WTF? it might possibly be edible, but if they paid so little care to the presentation, I would also be concerned about the level of care in the preparation. I don't care if the entire staff is working for minimum wage, that's a travesty; misshapen, hole in the middle, VERY poorly sliced... good lords of Cobol, it probably has some "Floor Spice" to boot.

lacydog: Cory Booker, the mayor of Newark, was cruising around with emergency personnel, taking warnings/distress messages on Twitter and apparently being a complete badass. I know Newark isn't the worst-off city, but that man has my respect.

If Cory Booker were anyone else, I'd say he's a master of PR bullshiat.

But the man is one of the few people, let alone politicians, who talks the talk and not just walks the

I'm sure he was just pre-emptively washing his hands of anything bad happening there. The mayor and Gov already have a history. No matter how strongly you urge people to evacuate there will always be some dumbasses who won't. and even though they created their own mess you still have to try to help them in their crisis. You cannot just turn a deaf ear to people in need.

It's like when Chris Christie had his chest pains and shortness of breath the last time. Even though his doctor told him plenty of times to quit stuffing his pig face and get off his fat ass and exercise he still came to the Emergency Room to care for him.

It's pretty farking easy to say "you're on your own" and pass the buck down the line. refusing to give Natl Guard help to one of, if not THE, hardest hit city in your state because you and the mayor "have a thing" and you need to politically disassociate yourself from any responsibility in this crisis.

So the Governor should risk the safety and lives of NG members because some incompetent mayor was elected by stupid people who decided they were too smart to evacuate and now want others to save their stupid asses?

Christy was right and remains right. AC can wait until it is safe for the NG, until then they get to pay for their shiatheaded choices.

But then, Langford can't pull a Nagin and blame his decisions on the president, while his governor sits by doing nothing.

Bonanza Jellybean: Jesus fark, this is pretty grim shiat. I guess living on the East Coast and dealing with mostly tons of snow at worst has left me clueless about what it must be like to live in regular hurricane country.

A normal category 1 isn't too bad around here, some flooding, maybe power outages, but much of hurricane territory isn't as densely populated as the northeast. But this isn't really a normal category 1 and may have higher sustained winds (I've seen anywhere from 80 to 130 mph, which would make it a cat 3).
