Vegan Meat Popsicle: syrynxx: Wouldn't it make more sense to pray for the entire storm to magically go away and the flood waters recede and all the dead people come back to life? Don't think small!

God's busy trying to get Tim Tebow back in the game. He only has time for so much besides that, don't be greedy.

Nah, Tebow's building an ark.

Eidola: Actually, no, however, I did correct myself in a subsequent post. ;)

Ha. I've seen a smaller one explode once from too much power draw right outside my office years ago. The loudest boom I'd heard that close up... those at the Con Ed plant I'm sure were much bigger than the one I saw explode, mine was on top of a power line... the Con Ed ones are probably HUGE ground units.

vegasj: Eidola: thisisyourbrainonFark: 182: power plant explosion in lower manhattan

Can anyone explain the forces fueling those explosions? It looks like an atomic bomb.

Photoshop, or the video equivalent apparently.

never seen a transformer explode?

I can vouch for this. One overcast day a transformer blew up down the block, the flash of light was comparable to lightning... this was one of the paint-can sized units that hangs on a residential power pole. Even "controlled" plasma, like a welder/cutter, is blinding. Now, plasma gives off a wider range of wavelengths than a tungsten lightbulb filament, so when these hit a CCD like in a traffic camera, they might overload the cells despite being outside the visual spectrum.

I was just on NYU's facebook page. The parents are freaking the fark out that NYU hasn't been updating them about their kids although they just posted an update that all the dorms are fine (albeit without power).

Unless you have a really mondo big UPS, it won't power even that light load very long.

I have a boat battery and dc-to-ac inverter. It has powered a lcd TV, a wii, and a modem for 5-6 hours before. The entire battery and inverter was probably $100, $150 at most.

A lot of consumer goods are extremely power conscience now.

Absolutely. And, I mean, aside from a record storm surge in NYC, record low pressure in the mid-atlantic and record diameter, what's it really got going for it? I mean, aside from the millions without power, dozens dead and likely billion dollars of damages. Besides all that what's it really got going for it?

Yeesh, just saw that. I'm a native of that area, and while it's not as big a deal as what's happening in NYC, I've wondered how things are going to go up there. something along the lines of "oh, Mrs. Smith, I'm sure your daughter at Weinstein is fine. She's probably weathering the storm doing lines off her roommates tits and riding her RA bareback"
