A big ass tree just fell on ALL THREE of our cars.

Amazingly, the trunk landed right between my car and my wife's in the 5 foot gap between them. A large branch wiped out her passenger side door. My cars seem to have escaped anything other than some scratches and a few dents on top of the dents I got last month when I hit a deer.

In NW DC. Pepco has about 17k customers without power, but we're still on. The winds are pretty strong but that's about it. According to the hourly forecast they should be down in the mid 20's by tomorrow morning. On the plus side, no work tomorrow!

/And the wife and I already generated a little electricity once today

Classic newbie mistake, never leave cars near trees. It's like building a trailer park in tornado alley. Magnets and all that.

It's really sunny and warm here in Los Angeles.

Actually, the air conditioning is running a bit cold, so it's kind of uncomfortable. I might move over to the window to get some extra warmth while I watch the sun set.

Yeah. I definitely moved my cars out into the middle of our lawn, away from the driveway and trees.

Aww...the memories. My parent's house had horrible phone wiring. I was reminded of that fact every time it rained. Especially hurricanes.

Boston is a joke pretending it a Mass of Sorrow...for the rest of us in in Mass, have the utility companies cut the damn tree limbs over the power lines. I am pretty sure paying other states to come in and camp at Dunkin Donuts is more costly.

So how much would it cost to move powerlines underground again? Why didn't we use part of the trillion dollar stimulus to do that so we don't have to deal with this shiat every snow/hurricane that hits NE.

They should just put Obama in front of a few dozen windmills.

Why don't we just bury the lines?

As the pre-emptive shutdown in NYC shows... underground does mean immunity to storms, just to wind. Flooding can cause underground line outages in greater numbers than aerial lines.

Burying lines is not only not practical in many areas, but may be virtually impossible without destroying existing structures.

Why don't we just cut the trees?

Because most people do not like the idea of effectively clear cutting the length of these lines--and any trees which might fall into the path of the lines. In front of my home I have a tree growing into the aerial lines, I'd rather suffer an outage around storms than lose the tree. I think there are many that feel the same.

Easton, PA. Have heard ambulances out and about probably fifteen to twenty times. Power keeps going out and back on.

For a while I was watching mesmerized from my balcony how a power wire was arcing just behind the trees... At first I thought it was a fire, but then I noticed it was going off and on with the lights. It was the world's slowest disco. Off, on, off, on... Now the power has been out for a few hours...

Here in CT, after Irene in particular, they _did_ spend a ton of that stimulus money to cut trees, and were still doing so right up till yesterday. It's been pretty on-going since about august, and they obviously really ramped up in the last week. That said, we still have about 500k people without power.
