Well that is one shiatty list. Let me pick two.

#34 Can't Get No Satisfaction, given its context, is the greatest guitar riff of all time. Why is it #34?

Any list of guitar riffs that includes Cinnamon Girl should be on a public toilet wall wrapped around a wooden spool.

2012-10-29 08:34:24 PM
I got dumber just clicking through that. Seriously, the assembler of this list can't be more than 35 years old.

2012-10-29 08:35:45 PM
Is Marty McFly's Johnny B Goode on there?

2012-10-29 08:37:55 PM
I hate you subtard.

2012-10-29 08:43:07 PM
No

2012-10-29 08:46:43 PM
Where is Bryan Adams' "Run To You" in that list?

2012-10-29 08:54:37 PM
NME is one of my favorite satire sites. Cracked could learn a few things from these guys.

2012-10-29 09:20:01 PM
Some of these are all "Add some song by this band" and done without thought. For example: Including Nirvana's biggest hit without consideration of their other songs; like Scentless Apprentice for example ... But then I'm pissed because they couldn't include any Dead Kennedy's tune... of which Moon over Marin is a catchy riff.

I mean even Sonic Youth, good ole sonic youth -they chose Teenage Riot? I mean it's a good riff but it doesn't stick in my head like say the Burning Spear.

I just think that whomever came up with this list really doesn't listen to the music that they purport to like. But perhaps that's just me, and what the fark do I know.

2012-10-29 09:45:28 PM
With all of the bullshiat pop songs they had on that list, they couldn't include GnR's "Sweet Child of Mine?"

Really?

2012-10-29 10:06:47 PM
-1

2012-10-29 10:15:39 PM
NME? Let's see how terrible this is laden with hipster crap. Layla better be in the top 5.

Ew, slideshow. Here's Deslide.

KINGS OF LEON? ARE YOU F*CKING KIDDING ME? And Layla is completely missing. This is fail even by NME standards.

2012-10-29 10:16:10 PM
Sad not to see Temple of the Dog "Say Hello 2 Heaven"

2012-10-29 10:17:01 PM
Seriously, the best guitar riffs of all time and God is only on it once. Are you f*cking kidding me?

They would've picked the most commercially successful songs of those bands given the chance. Feel the Noize, in a Big Country (what else), Blood Stains (it was featured in a video game), and Alex Chilton.

Of course they didn't go with any of these bands and chose instead to pick the Hep tunes of what they think their readers want to see.

No Layla?

Was just playing that on acoustic a little while ago. Fun!

There's so many to choose from the last 40 years that this dude missed, but in case they are a youngster - where they hell were they during the 90s.

MM - Look to your Orb for the Warning
Helmet - Unsung
Green Day - BS/Jaded
Offspring - The Kids Aren't Alright
Type O Negative - Christian Woman (controversial lyrics)

...Just to name a few relative knowns from the 90s.

And how the hell do you leave Dream Theater off a top 50 riffs list?! The author should never be able to write and article about music again and be physically banned from listening to any music for a year for missing that! Here's Under A Glass Moon damn it!

/rant

Cinnamon Girl is a great song and has a nice riff, but there are several Neil Young riffs I'd place ahead of it. I honestly don't understand why this song is always held in such high regard.

/same thing with Heart of Gold

2012-10-30 12:18:48 AM
list fails without "The Enemy Within"

2012-10-30 12:19:25 AM
No Metallica. Of course not, because what did those guys ever do? Or Aerosmith's "Walk This Way."

These lists are made by trolls and retards.

2012-10-30 12:21:52 AM
1) List fails without ZZ Top's "Sharp Dressed Man".

2) Too many hipster bands on that list.

2012-10-30 12:24:08 AM
List is not really bad....dump the 90's stuff..and its passable. Give them credit for including some of the R&B and disco acts who had some great guitar riffs (Chic's Nile Rodgers has probably had more guitar riffs sampled/stolen than any rock guitarist)

Yeah I agree, the lack of Dead Kennedy's is a megafail. I think the one at the beginning of Police Truck is my favorite.

Also noteworthy: Home, Another Day and Stream of Consciousness.

Also, where the fark is Crazy Train, or Jessica, or Enter Sandman or for the love of all things holy Sultans of Swing?

Delay: Well that is one shiatty list. Let me pick two.

Because it's not a countdown, it's a list in alphabetical order by artist.

/list still sucks

Bob Bain.

Mm hmmm.
Well, I guess that article achieved what I can only assume was its reason for existing; I feel stupid for liking metal, I want to buy a Volkswagen, switch out my mp3's for cassettes, move to Manhattan and start drinking craft beer.

Somewhere Matt Pike is rolling in his grave.

2012-10-30 12:46:49 AM
No Crazy Train? No Sweet Child of Mine? No Layla? No Barracuda? No The Trooper? No Raining Blood? No hundreds of other riffs from songs better than shiat like Kings of Leon?

The_Sponge: 1) List fails without ZZ Top's "Sharp Dressed Man".

You misspelled "La Grange"

Stevie Ray needs some love too - maybe Cold Shot or Couldn't Stand the Weather.

Not to mention all the amazing classic blues that they're ignoring

If someone who had the fortitude to click through that could tell me if Money for Nothin was on there I'd be grateful

The absence of Day Tripper is absolutely baffling.

Most top 50 lists suck, but few get to the level of "we have absolutely no farking idea what we're writing about" quite the way this one does. So for that, you deserve commendation.

I've really got a thing for "Legs" at the moment. Not exactly a riff, though, but it's a perfect example of how a band can use more than just the lead to knock it out of the ballpark.

2012-10-30 01:12:32 AM

Virtual Pariah: Nope..

1. Thank you
2. tsssssssssssss

I got two entries in before I realized that reading about the greatest guitar riffs is stupid. This should be a youtube video so we can farking hear the riffs.

2012-10-30 01:24:11 AM
Whitesnake - In the Still of the Night
Dio - Last in Line or going further back, Rainbow - Man on the Silver Mountain
Priest - Screaming for Vengeance
For you Canadians how about some Fastway - Say What you Will

Iron Maiden - Wasted Years, The Trooper or Somewhere in Time.

I could go on, but I won't

/yeah, I'm dating myself
