Well, I'm getting better at exercising as I'm getting older. I used to be only half hearted in the gym in college, never really tracked things that well. Then I really didn't exercise for about four years. Then I almost had a spa dropped on me where I had to say "I'm not as strong as I look".

Now it's two years later and I'm finally getting the hang of things, I'm 33 and I'm at least as strong as I look. Now to look stronger and drop some fat.

I am pushing 300 elbows, and hope to be 350 by end of Thanksgiving festivities. I need to pack in on so that I can not freeze this winter. And then, the extra weight is really helpful in pushing off my rivals during rut.

Good job. Seems the same for me, I started when I was 38 (41 now) and the gains are great. Went from flab and no upper body strength to fairly lean and lots of pull ups, and heavy bench and dead lifts. I think if a person doesn't love working out and lacks a basic plan, he will probably never stick with it.

It is a great way to track, set goals and talk to other people interested in the same fitness goals. They award points for working out so you "level up" if you keep with it and there are quest achievements for certain goals. If you run/cycle it also has runkeeper integration which is nice.

I'm starting to exercise again after a stress-induced downward-spiral hiatus. My basics are doing at least 75 pushups (girlie pushups for now) and 75 situps (full situps, not crunches) a day, and either running or biking for 30 minutes a day (and gradually building either speed or time, haven't decided yet).

Sadly the running is on a treadmill and the biking is on my stationary trainer but it's better than nothing. Once I get comfortable doing 75 girlie pushups hopefully in a row, I'll switch to manly pushups, and then I'll switch to doing it for time instead of reps.

But I'd be happy for any suggestions from the pros out there :-) I want to lose weight, but I'd also just like to be strong / maintain strength, and I figure the full-body things like pushups and real situps are good. I'm not inclined to do squats and lunges at this point because as a lady my legs are already hella bulky and I figure the running and biking are taking care of my legs pretty well.

Rather than do pushups from your knees, do them with your hands elevated (bench or table) with your back flat. You'll maintain good form and use the same muscles as a "real" pushup, but the elevation will make them easier.

There are now 88 including me.

Unfortunately, most of their strength achievements are dumbbell/weight oriented when I do body-weight exercises.

I've done this, though in reality it took me 9 weeks, as I repeated a few weeks when I didn't feel like I was ready to move on. It's a structured training program that will build up both strength and upper body endurance. Having the structured schedule with periodic checks to see where you are really makes it a lot easier to stick to.

Just a suggestion. There are similar programs for situps, dips, squats, and pullups. :)

So much this. Life definitely can get in the way.

Beginning of the year bought a elliptical and got the P90X routine. Was doing great in the spring, lost 30 lbs (still need to lose 60). Then had my first son in June and since then it has been impossible to carve out an hour in the day to get back into it. I am now just stuck at 270 and it is annoying (6'2", so way more weight than I need to carry) . Hopefully he will start sleeping thru the night and get to a point where my wife and I don't have to hold him/watch him all the time. Hard to get up and workout at 6am before work when you went to bed at 2-3am. I actually got on the elliptical for 30 minutes last week once after work, haven't been able to repeat that yet.

I've got into far better shape than just doing 30 minutes of high-moderate effort.

When I started weightlifting, I was really surprised at how nice and thoughtful people who lift are. I was expecting the sort of stereotypical Jersey-boys, but most people at the gym who are serious about it are nice, friendly, willing to help, and are fairly well-researched on the subject. There's always the exceptions, but they're just that.

Of course, subby would have to his fat arse off the couch and dust off his cheeto-stained fingers to know this.

Have you considered doing Tabata protocol? You can get the benefits of interval training in during a much shorter time.

Depends on the town/location. When I travel to military towns the gyms are full of the stereotype.
