We can't do that because that would be change and the old people don't understand it thus they will vote against it.

export the technology to India. They have enough trash just lying around to be energy independent for centuries.

/seriously the place is one big garbage dump

I don't know. Are we sure this isn't some kind of communism? I mean they got a king right? Some thing's got to be messed up about it.

/And what's this bit about district heating? Yeah, it's probably some kind of socialism.

Hmm...I wonder what they would give us for Romney, his entire family and Ryan.

The Swedes should come talk to the crazy old lady I live next door to. She routinely puts two of these gigantic 96 gallon garbage cans out on the curb each week while my family of four rarely fills ours a third full. I suspect she's cutting up homeless people but I'm too squeamish to go out there and check.

And we can't do that here because of:

Soshlizms!
Mafia control of waste management (watched Sopranos too much)
...

what else?

As someone that have an apartment heated by district heating ("Fjärrvärme") i get a kick out your reply.

The only thing that is a bit troublesome is that we have to sort everything, this is a picture that show my regional facility:
www.ornskoldsvik.sewww.mivaovik.se
The red containers have separate uses like unclean wood, metal, clean wood, glass, tires, refrigerators, electronics, theres like 10 different categories of trash. But there is also smaller local facilities where we put newspapers, metal packaging, green glass, transparent glass, hard plastic, soft plastic, cardboard, batteries, etc in separate containers. Almost all stuff sold are labeled as to which container it goes into. ("This top of this packaging is sorted as soft plastic, and the bottom as metal")

2012-10-29 04:30:13 PM
Yeah, please, send us more stuff to burn to provide warmth for my house

This is a lie, I heat with a pellet boiler powered by pellets fron 15 miles away. The trees were cut down even closer.

But in all seriousness recycling is very different here. Everything is just sorted out and taken to some big green bins once every month or two. Or if you drink a bottle of wine every couple days like my wife and I, a bit more often. Because glass bottles take up a lot of space.

And you know, separating trash out takes no time at all. After a few weeks, you just do it without thinking, and it takes no time at all. And a once a month trip to the sorting bins takes 15 min.

But it seems like most Americans want treat recycling as something that takes hours of commitment and that they don't have time. My wife thinks they do. She says "americans want to hurry up to do nothing. They are lazy as a society. They talk about how their jobs are so stressful, and they have no free time, they complain about the time they waste in traffic, but second they get home they sit infront of the TV all night."

I agree. Recycling isn't that hard. Stop watching honey twat twat and sort your shiat out

How do you Swedes stand being so awesome?

2012-10-29 05:15:47 PM
Since I married a Swede, I hear Republicans use terms like "European Secular Socialist" as an insult and it makes me wanna slap a motherfarker.

My in-laws are as awesome as anyone can get, and Sweden is a gorgeous country (in the summertime). Being a native San Diegan and my love for perfect, non-threatening weather and the beaches/deserts/mountains is all that keeps me from moving to Sweden. And when she and I are ready to have kids, we're having them in Sweden.

This is what pisses me off about America: We barely even sort our trash. I'm not saying recycling is great, or even worth it right now (aside from aluminum cans). But in the future the sorted trash will be worth money, while the unsorted trash will not.

Societies have been sorting their trash for thousands upon thousands of years. But now we're too stupid to figure it out.

And the Germans produce more energy than they can use?

We're far behind!

This article has no substance. Just because they're running out of domestic trash to power their 'renewable energy plants' does not mean they are being operated efficiently.

I think I would enjoy living in that part of the world. They really seem to have a good thing going on.

We're talking about the nation that built, launched, and then destroyed the Mars Climate Orbiter because we can't be arsed to learn metric, so yeah, I'm afraid so.

This is sadly accurate. People are incredibly intent on preserving the status quo.

Kiinux: Just because they're running out of domestic trash to power their 'renewable energy plants' does not mean they are being operated efficiently.

Sure, the plants themselves could probably be improved over time. But the fact that they've taken the meager 4% of Sweden's trash that doesn't get recycled, and then used it to provide significant amounts of heat and energy instead of letting it rot in a hole in the ground -- that alone means that they're managing their waste far more efficiently than virtually anyone else regardless of how efficient the actual energy conversion is.

Not 2 days ago I had a discussion with a Republican fellow who insisted that green energy technologies were worthless and wouldn't -- couldn't -- produce any significant amount of power. Yet Germany, the EU's economic powerhouse who apparently produced more energy than it can use, already generates a significant portion of its energy through renewables and is already beating every projection for transforming their power grid. They are currently on track to produce almost half of their power through renewables in only a decade.
