AdolfOliverPanties: Like guarding a tomb? What threat are they really expecting there?

Ok, when the Zombie Apocalypse comes, you'll want those guards at that tomb, you'll need those guards at that tomb. To have trained military specialists reanimate and come back from the grave with those skills will prove the deciding factor in the Afterworld. Without those marines there ready to pop one in the skulls of the zombie troops, we could lose the war before it even started!

KrispyKritter: REO-Weedwagon: Ah, The Tomb of the Unknowns, where America's military romanticists go get dewy-eyed for the dead, then go home and happily cheer on the next war.

Warm and filling is the bowls of patriotic propaganda porridge swallowed by those willing to do or die, spoon fed to them by fearless leaders whose sons and daughters are safe and warm back at home. It's a filling stew from a bottomless bowl courtesy of Daddy Warbucks families who make great coin from your children dying around the world. Keep telling yourself it's for the red white and blue as you bury your boys while Senators and Congress laugh at you.

After reading your postings these past few months and looking at your profile I must conclude that you truly are the most miserable person on the planet. You just won't stop filling every thread with scorn and derision no matter what the subject matter. It's not everyone elses fault you haven't gotten any stank on the hang low since Eisenhower was a 2LT. Go hire a hooker and get happy!

The east coast is NOT sniveling and cowering. People are already losing their homes - this is a big deal.

I think we should let them have this one.

The WindowLicker: henryhill: The act would be ALOT more impressive if this was something that NEEDED to be done.

It depends on what you mean by NEEDED. Nothing critical will fail if they don't guard it, nobody will immediately die, or even risk their health. However, the Old Guard are constantly reminding us that war comes with casualties. They are "building awareness" and more importantly ensuring that the public and the military both reflect on the historic and ongoing costs of war. I think that is something that Needs to be done.

For maximum impact it needs to be done at all times, not just when it is convenient. It is sort of like any other 'support the troops' activity. The only difference here is that they are actually doing it.

I'm glad they build awareness that people die during wars. I'd never have known that otherwise, just like I never heard of breast cancer until the NFL went pink.

Thank goodness for all this good people do by doing meaningless but symbolic gestures in the name of awareness.

Not to mention I've marched in far worse weather than that. . . in a marching band. We're known more for being on the receiving end of atomic wedgies than bravery. They wouldn't actually be doing that in hurricane-force winds anyway because anyone standing at attention would be blown over. That they can stand upright at all means that picture really is just "a little wind and rain".

There's plenty to praise the USMC about without having to resort to glorifying guard duty.

It's nice that they're out there making the gesture, but really. They're out in 40-something-degree weather, in a bit of rain with some wind gusts. It's a Cat 1. People in Forida play in the surf in Cat. 1s. Commercial work in worse weather than this routinely, and think nothing of it. Heck, U.S. Navy sailors work in weather like this routinely and think nothing of it.

Because if it's patriotic you can have it both ways.

vernonFL: Why does the tomb need to be guarded, you might ask?

Because people used to have picnics and gatherings on the grave as the area had great views of the city, and the military thought this was disrespectful.

A perfectly good reason. But I don't think it's applicable during a farking hurricane.
