What's wrong with La Llorona? If anything it shows some awareness of the cultural myths of other countries. We going to make a fuss if someone dresses as the Headless Horseman? The Pied Piper?

Seriously. Dressing up as a specific character is cool; dressing up as a gross stereotype isn't. I don't see that it's too complicated.

You can always go as Drunk Farker. Bonus: no fur hat or Kalishnikov needed.

Well, TFA says that La Llorona is a fine costume, it's dressing up like a Random Hispanic Chica that they say isn't so fine.

The posters seem vague and off the mark to me but that may be what makes this almost inadvertently a good campaign to inspire conversation about what's appropriate and what's not.

I love it when college students get all butthurt over something meaningless and start a "campaign." It always results in unintentional comedy.

The sad part is most of them won't ever grow up to realize what douchebags they are they'll just keep on keeping on.

I don't understand the "stigma" line... that would imply that the stereotypes are "true" and that the "real" people involved are ashamed of them, which I don't believe is what they are trying to get across. Maybe they mean the "stigma" of the "laughing" about the stereotypes, but, that isn't really made very clear.

And, I guess all these people have a big problem with "Deliverance", since any "Appalachian" costumes are basically just riffing off of the suggestions in that movie.

The "Muslim" costume is quite a stretch. It looks more like a belly-dancer costume than women's traditional Muslim clothing.

Years ago my buddy was Chef from South Park, and he was black face. He got some raised eye brows and looks that night.

I wonder--there is a justifiable and understandable pushback from all cultures to assimilate to what is "successful American" culture. I get negative stereotypes, specifically some of the ones on here--but what does a dude dressed like a rapper do to cross the line? Is the hillbilly stereotype damaging really in white america?

I ask these questions looking for answers--not trying to sound like an ignorant prick.

Also--there is one stereotype I constantly hear about I never hear anyone objecting to. Just one. It involves huge dongs.

2012-10-29 12:57:48 PM
Wait, is it OK for my wife to go dressed in that Middle East belly dancer stereotype garb? Does it matter that she's from Lebanon and won medals as a teenager for belly dancing?

I've posted this on Fark before, but 2 years ago my Filipino husband went as "white" for Halloween. He wore 3 popped collared shirst (for super coolness), khakis, wrapped a sweater around his shoulders, held a Wall Street Journal and a starbucks, painted his face white, and held his eyes reaaaaally wide open when he talked to people.

Everyone at the bar loved it :-)

I have a friend that went out in a KKK costume a few years ago.

A KKK hood and robe. In Atlanta. Oh, and he's black.

I know him well enough to get why he was doing it (making fun of the Klan) , but I still thought it was in poor taste.

about half of those costumes are terrible. the others are boring.
the asian guy with rice and books, wtf? and the "african" costume, is this 1950?
do people actually dress like that anymore?
on another note, i went to a halloween party and EVERY female except me was dressed as a "sexy ______". way to try hard for a costume, ladies.
not that my costume was all that, but hell, 1950s airline stewardess is a little creative.
(okay not really)

Oh, and to the brother POed about the blackface, pants on the ground, hood looking outfit:
Go straighten out "your people" and then they won't get made fun of.

The Ni-Bong culture is not a culture and wouldn't exist if it wasn't made up and supported by self proclaimed Ni-Bongs.

And you people saying "Y'all"
Knock it off.
It doesnt make you sound intelligent
at all.

I was among the first of my generation to turn the tide from the "regular" costumes to sexy costumes... I feel partly responsibly for the onslaught of mini-dress and cat ears we have now every Halloween. I don't mind the sexy part - hell, that was what I used to do... but at some point people need to be a little creative :-/

If there's one stigma out there that I wouldn't wish on anyone, it's the stigma of being good in school and a general overachiever.

That's a very stigmatic stigma that stigmatizes lots of people.
