Americans in general understand Macroeconomics as well as they understand probability.

Expected value when risk-neutral?

When confronted with a trinary possible positive outcome, OK fine. 15 million to 1 odds I see as somewhat different, but then, in the scenario posited in your link, I'd just take the assured benefit.

Yep. I don't gamble, and tend to avoid situations that could lead to me dying as a Fark headline.

I loved that debate. Catholic fight! I doubt most American Catholics are on the Ryan side of the Church.

Yep. I posted a link way up thread about a poll of American Catholics. 60% believe the Church should concentrate on Social Justice, 31% on Social Issues. So basically, American Catholics attitude to the Catholic Hierarchy is " well, that's just your opinion".

Here's the link again Link.
Interesting points:
"His Catholic running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), has been criticized by bishops for his controversial budget plan that would cut government programs that aid the poor."
and
"Vice President Joe Biden, a Catholic, has faced the same criticism from conservative Catholics, who have also criticized his and Obama's support of same-sex marriage rights."

So, no so monolithic as we are portrayed.
