The iPad mini's 163 ppi, 1024 x 768-pixel display is hardly "standard definition."

I'll say. Resolution that low hasn't been the standard since like 2003

My mom likes her Kindle Fire (1G), my wife likes her nook (also 1G), and something something cold head hands my Nexus 7. The number-of-apps advantage that the iPad has is pretty minor in comparison to the quality and depth of apps that's on Android/Amazon.

Would it be acceptable to say anyone who bought an iPad mini and already owns an iPad and IPhone deserves to be murdered?

Nexus 7 has been worth every penny. Usually just use it for netflix and hulu, but the 'app gap' isn't nearly what it was. Wish I could find some good 3d modeling software though, that is all it is really lacking.

Love my Kindle Fire... getting the child one for Xmas..
Husband is an Apple/Mac Kool Aid drinker...(Iphone, Ipad, Ipod, Macbook, etc) wants the mini only because it is a Mac...

Love my Android phone too, just wish T-Mobile would get around to the damn upgrade...

Yep. The only app, and I mean the only app, that I want that Android doesn't have is Civilization Revolution....which is available for the Nintendo DS, Xbox, Wii, Mac, Windows, iPhone, iPad, and Windows farking Phone, but not Android. Why 2K Games?? Why??

I do love my Nexus 7 though.

As an ordained minister, I'd say that it's morally correct to say that, yes, murder is acceptable in that scenario. It's less of a mercy killing and more of a cleansing process. ;)

I'm up in the air on getting an 8.9" Fire HD. My favorite tablet to date is a Galaxy 8.9. I hate the Kindle Launcher and I finally did replace it with Go Launcher on my current (1st gen) Fire, but I love the 8.9" form factor. I'd like to see someone offer a 2560x1600 screen at that size, but it seems that other than the aforementioned Galaxy and one particular model of Motorola Tablet, that size has otherwise been abandoned.

I'm glad that Apple is at least starting to concede that there is value in other form factors. The size and weight of an ipad are one of my biggest problems with it.

Is there a reason all tablets have ugly fat borders? Why hasn't anyone made a sleek and elegant tablet yet, for all the guff we have to read about how these things are beautifully designed, and sculpted by angels.

because they have to sick the electronics somewhere. Bezels are just hiding other elements.

A true, bezeless tablet would be neat though.

This. I sold my old Kindle Fire and upgraded to an HD recently, and the new thicker bezel makes holding it so much easier than with the previous Kindle, which had a thinner bezel on the sizes. Apple claims to have fixed this in software with the iPad Mini, but the thin bezels on the side just make it look weird compared to the larger iPads, especially since the top and bottom bezels are still thick.

So it's about better screen resolution unless apple's is lower in which case screen resolution doesn't matter.

Just kidding - buy what you like folks (my house has an ipad2 and a nexus 7 - we gave the kindle fire 1 to my nephew but frankly it was fine). There's lots and lots of great tablets on the market these days and more are coming. They all have lots and lots of apps and games - I say the war is over and everyone's a winner.

I was an early adopter with the Sony PRS. My mind was completely blown with the possibilities but my Kindle Fire made me start getting rid of my books and re-buying digital versions. One day I hope to have a tiny little bookshelf with all my life on my Kindle so that I can be nothing when the world is obliterated by an EMP wave and we have to start over like in Canticle For Leibowitz.

I would love to try a Surface in person, but there is not a MS store in my area.
After trying Win 8 on a computer, it's pretty much trash. But I can see where it would work fine for a tablet.
I think MS is crazy for not having more retail outlets for the surface.

Owns a Nexus 7, New Kindle HD, and a iPad 3.

I loves gadgets.

I have an iPhone 5 and a Kindle Fire.

I see myself staying with iPhone and getting a new one every 3 years or so. I see myself keeping the Fire and possibly getting a new tablet in 4/5 years (when I do, it will be whatever kindle tablet is popular at the time)

Is it illegal to like apple phones and hate the tablets while doing the opposite for kindle/android stuff? Both idiotic sides can call me a heretic!

I have an iphone and was debating getting a mini for web browsing, music, and recipe stuff in the kitchen, but primarily as a reader.

I bought a kindle instead and realized the ibook stuff is DRM encrypted so regardless of it being 'epub' it's useless.

So I'm glad I saved myself 250$ and f apples walled garden.

Not illegal, but pretty expensive. You can't leverage the value of "universal apps". However, that means you are also not trapped on one platform because the idea of abandoning all your applications is so unpleasant.

2012-10-29 01:23:34 PM
Tell me, how many iOS apps are actually relevant to the comparison? Of that 275,000 apps a full 10% are fart generators. Who needs to pick from 25,000 fart sounds?

It's Pareto taken overtime. 90% of the demand is for 10% of the apps. And most of those have gone multi-platform because it's all variants on Java these days.

Apple's only choice now is to strike out in lawsuits because they have a constant sense of dominance, which results in fear. If Window's 8 hadn't sucked they'd be throwing lawsuits but Metro is like a froth of plutonium and shiat.

I am the same way. Android phones only, but prefer my iPad, although I know Android tablets are just as good or even better.

That said, I can't believe that anyone would buy an iPad Mini. The price point is awful, resolution is not as good as its $200 competitors, can't do stereo sound, and hardware is crippled compared to iPad 3. Even the iPhone 5's a disappointment. Both releases prove to me that Apple is no longer breaking new heights, no longer leap-frogging over competition, and not even bothering catching up to what competitors are already doing - it's lagging now. I thought the iPhone 5 would leap-frog over Samsung Galaxy S3 with amazing new features since it was released later, but it can barely hold a candle to what the GS3 can do in terms of features.

Sales of the Kindle fire and Fire HD are damn good. It's really quite good. And this is from someone that tests it on a daily basis. Also the versions in the pipe that are still to come out and you've not heard about are pretty freaking nice.

Just saying.

THIS. It's basically irrelevant. Between Android and iOS there's nothing to choose. Even the Microsoft store will probably have the app you want.

There's a lot happening in the cross-platform field. For non-gaming, information apps, you can build with something like Phonegap that uses HTML, CSS and JS to do the app UI and that's growing because it means that you only need 1 code base (and a few bits and pieces of platform-specific code). Build once, deploy to iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Blackberry. You don't even need to install anything - you can upload a zip file and they send back the app. Price? $10 a month to do 25 apps.

These are the two killer apps for the iPad and they are not available on the Google Play.

Sure, many apps will be ported, but many, many more will not. Tablets are not general-purpose devices, people buy them to run just a handful of apps.

/Android apps, as a rule, are just not as good, so there's that...
