Dr.Mxyzptlk.: Will the landlords unlock the doors leading to the roof so black people can get helicoptered off the high-rises apartments?

They can cut their way to the roofs with axes like the N.O. black people did, or didn't.

The real question is how long until they start shooting at the Coast Guard rescue helicopters.

What's the over/under on when Sean Penn shows up to deliver supplies to poor minorities affected by the storm?

Wavy News (Virginia) is reporting that the crew of the HMS Bounty called out in distress this morning that they were taking on water and had to abandon ship. Two people are still missing.

They were on their way from Connecticut to Florida. :S

Not really. Now Amsterdam would cause more of a glitch, but it would only be a glitch because it just reroutes.

FeatheredSun: I never have understood certain folks' obsession with weather and storms.

This will be a dud. Mild flooding. Slight property damage. No loss of life.

Sorry if that's not exciting.

Basic human psychology. It panders to one of our most basic emotions: fear. Anything that can make anyone afraid will automatically be jumped upon and their paranoid thoughts will carry them to extreme theories.

I cannot for the life of me, understand why someone would consider living in a hurricane prone area, such as Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Long Island, etc. Then when the big one hits, they expect the rest of us to come to their rescue and subsidize their insurance claims with higher rates imposed on the rest of us.

//just kidding
//I honestly hope you all get through this ok.
///safe in Florida
//realize that NO area of the US is immune to weather disaster.

There has already been loss of life, there is already MASSIVE flooding, and it hasn't even hit us yet, you farking dolt.

So you're saying things are different when it's heading for you instead of the gulf coast, and we shouldn't make fun of you because of that fact?

Right. I'm right on top of that, Rose.

People are calmly going about their business where I am. Everyone seems to have this blank, dazed look on their face. As if their brains can't deal with the impending crisis, and they just settle on routine...

Oh wait, I'm in Canada. That's normal.

The president canceled his campaign trips Monday and Tuesday to the swing states of Florida and Colorado, far beyond the reach of Hurricane Sandy. His people say the president needs to stay home and monitor things, which one Republican found interesting.

"You notice that he's canceling his trips over the hurricane. He didn't cancel his trips over Benghazi," former GOP presidential candidate and ex-House Speaker Newt Gingrich said on ABC's "This Week."

/That was from an article from CNN

How about we don't do politics for a bit, I know it's a bit much to ask but....well.

Central MD here... Per the radar maps we're getting the brunt of the precipitation right now, but it's just a straight-down heavy shower with no winds to speak of. Of course, the sump pump in the basement is working overtime, it's cycling pretty much every minute. That's my main concern, that it might burn out... I need to figure out plan B there.

Other than that I'm doing great. I have almost 10kW of generator power, plenty of food, fuel and booze. The derecho earlier this year knocked down anything that was going to fall already, so I'm not worried there. I might even take a walk later and see what the Patapsco river is doing. If this storm is anything like hurricane Agnes the way it sounds to be I might get some interesting pictures.

I live along the NH/MA border. It's been raining steadily since 7:30AM or so. We've got wind gusts between 20 and 40 MPH and WMUR keeps warning us that power could go out at any moment. Most of the local K-12 school districts are closed for the day.

I live down the road from a fire station and have noticed several fire trucks drive by today already.

It's looking like a fun day.

2012-10-29 09:32:41 AM
The sky was a very freaky fog purple this morning. The air feels... off...

I'm near Syracuse, and we do not ever panic and cancel schools prematurely. If school's closed, then there is Weather. The hilltop communities have all called half-days, and most everyone else is cancelling after school activities. Our local weather guy is downplaying this like crazy, but the Weather Channel is not so optimistic. We'll see...

We're well prepared, but if it turns out to be a whole lot a nothing, that's fine too.

Wilmington DE reporting in. Getting more wind than rain at the moment.

My dad just mentioned something interesting. If the storm does cross through Delaware, it will be the first one ever. We've gotten the effects of hurricanes past, but no storm eye has ever come in-state.
