gregscott: I'm quite interested in etymology, but have no high level training. I've long hand an opinion on the evolution of this word, but first I checked wikipedia, which strengthened my hypothesis:
"Squaw is an English language loan-word, used as a noun or adjective, whose present meaning is an indigenous woman of North America. It is derived from the eastern Algonquian morpheme meaning 'woman' that appears in numerous Algonquian languages variously spelled squa, skwa, esqua, sqeh, skwe, que, kwa, ikwe, exkwew, xkwe, etc. At present, the term is often held to be offensive, though controversy surrounds the historical evidence claimed for such a view."

I presume in the original language, it meant woman, without any other particular connotation. Then bigoted whites used the term in a pejorative way, generally meaning "whore", projecting their own desires and prejudices into the words. And thus the word was sullied, but not in polite company. So for most or all of the time since, the word has had a literal meaning (neutral) and a prurient connotation known to a minority of people.

My comment on the above, which is probably accurate: Why not merely restore the literal meaning, and disavow the pejorative connotation? One reason for this is the lack of a viable alternative: Who out there knows an "acceptable" indian word for "woman".

The thing is to most people squaw just means Indian woman or wife. That's what it meant to me when I was a kid. That's what it obviously meant to the marketer of this costume.

That's probably all it meant to millions and probably most people, but what we see is the PC movement saying "No, you're wrong, that's offensive". And by spreading the word that it is an offensive term they make it offensive to even more people.

Instead of letting any pejorative meaning it ever had slip into obscurity the PC movement is insuring that the insult will live in infamy. By making it known that it is offensive they will insure that some people will use it offensively. It gives bigots another weapon in their arsenal of hate speech.

Amazing amount of butthurt in this thread. Marketer sells costume with name offensive to some, probably because "Sassy Native American Woman" just don't have that zing. People point out that the costume name offends them. Marketer apologizes and pulls costume.

Seems like just a normal way of doing business to me

timujin: the company didn't know the term "squaw," which is believed to be derived from the Algonquian word for woman, has come to be considered demeaning and offensive by many Indians.

True, it has been used derisively for a long time, they should have known that.

Kathy Paul Dover told the CBC Indians "would never dress like that.

Really? They wouldn't??? Man, and here I thought "nuns" and "nurses" all looked like this:

That first picture is five shades of blasphemy. Not cool.

Then I notice that the nurse's uniform also has a cross on it.
And my mind is blown at a symbol of torture which was
transformed into a symbol of altruism coming right back around
to being a symbol for scariness/halloween.

that first one is still blasphemy, though.

Buck teeth with fangs.
Afro wig.

Wooden shoes.
"tribal" tattooes.
"Deram" catcher pendant.
Green derby with plastic shamrock in band.

The prefect costume.

Full Blown Jimbo: This isn't about political correctness any more than wearing blackface or round glasses and big buck teeth would be.

Actually, that's pretty much the definition of political correctness. Blackface is politically incorrect, as is round glasses and buck teeth characterizing Japanese. The term "politically correct" was invented pretty much as a backlash against "politically sensitive" language constructs like "African-American" instead of "Black" or "Negro" (neither of which has negative connotations).

2012-10-29 09:33:11 AM
I wonder if any of the "outrage" could be due to "Sassy Squaw" sounding a bit like "Sasquatch?"

Come to think of it, new costume design. Sassy Sasquatch! Just replace the leather stuff with brown fur.

The theory is that it originally referred to the detritus found under the, erm, passenger decks of slave ships. Which it didn't. And anyway, I don't think they had grits inflicted on them until they arrived on the plantations.

Things have changed for the better. It doesn't matter now that Mamaw became a widow when the family refused to sell mineral and timber rights for pennies on the dollar. It's been generations since Papaw and his union buddies battled the Pinkertons. You don't have to sell your soul to the company store anymore. American attitudes have changed since we bombed our own citizens in defense of wage slavery. A few of the men can now earn a decent living helping funnel the wealth of the area's natural resources to the Northeast. There's no gate at the mouth of the holler, you're free to travel in search of work. If you avoid establishing an Appalachian enclave where you settle, your kids won't have a discernable accent. You're white, it shouldn't be too hard to pass.
Don't be so sensitive about those Cletus and Brandine stereotypes. If you're really offended by those hillbilly-teeth Halloween costumes at work or you think your boss just might be discriminating against you because of all those aunt-mom jokes he tells, lodge a complaint with HR, they'll set things to rights.

Which is a shame really. I was in Denmark less than a year ago and nobody would go raid England with me. They all had weird excuses like "I have to go to work in the morning" and stuff like that. Then they showed me the boat I was suggesting crossing heavy seas in, and I decided that I didn't need that sort of suffering in my life.

doglover: timujin: So... if they were marketing Little Black Sambo costumes, would it be alright as long as they weren't marketing them to black people?

Little Black Sambo is a good book. Have you even read it? Yes, it's racist. But it's not derogatory. Have you read any books from those eras? Racism was less looked down on and more scientific fact. The Indian was a different species with queer customs and admirable savage nobility. But then again, so was the Frenchman.

The costume doesn't represent the reality of today's modern aboriginal woman in that not one is slim without being on meth. Every first nations girl here in Canada that I've met (full blood not mixed blood) is very fat and very unattractive. KFC is what today's aboriginal gals are "all about"
