GORDON: I just don't understand the things that some people find offensive. It must be exhausting to be that sensitive.

True. Granted, in this situation, they shouldn't have called it squaw (because, as I found out here on Fark, that's slang for Indian vjj), but still, I do agree that I don't really get political correctness.

\even if it's in the face of a fairly ugly costume like that

log_jammin: An Incharacter representative said the company didn't know the term "squaw," which is believed to be derived from the Algonquian word for woman, has come to be considered demeaning and offensive by many Indians.

uh.....

Don't get your breech cloth in a wad but American Indian is an acceptable term.

American Indian vs. Native American

"Despite the wave of political correctness in the 1990s, during which "Native American" was often trumpeted as a more sensitive phrase, American Indians remain split on which term is preferable. A 1995 Department of Labor survey found that close to 50 percent of American Indians were perfectly happy with that label, while 37 percent preferred to be known as Native Americans. Those who prefer the former often do so because "Native American" sounds like a phrase concocted by government regulators-note, for example, that one of the community's most radical civil rights groups is the American Indian Movement. Those who prefer Native American, on the other hand, often think that "Indian" conjures up too many vicious stereotypes from Western serials."

timujin: doglover: timujin: So... if they were marketing Little Black Sambo costumes, would it be alright as long as they weren't marketing them to black people?

Little Black Sambo is a good book. Have you even read it? Yes, it's racist. But it's not derogatory. Have you read any books from those eras? Racism was less looked down on and more scientific fact. The Indian was a different species with queer customs and admirable savage nobility. But then again, so was the Frenchman.

The acceptability of racism in 1899 versus now also has no bearing on the conversation. Whether or not you find the book to be good is irrelevant. It is, as you say, racist and therefore inappropriate for use as a child's Halloween costume.

the French have never been either admirable nor noble....

This is SICK (all the political correctness, not the costume). At this rate, I'll be very
VERY surprised if some advocacy group with a stick up their collective asses doesn't
get Halloween banned on the grounds that it teaches and encourages racial, cultural,
and economic stereotypes.

People need to grow the fark up and get over themselves. THIS is what comes of the
sense of entitlement and "never EVER make them feel bad" philosophy that kids have
been raising their kids with the last couple of decades.

Not everyone is going to agree with you. Not everyone is going to blow sunshine up
your ass and tell you that you're the greatest thing since the Frappucino.

There's this pesky thing called freedom of expression. It means that folks can have
views that don't necessarily coincide with yours, as long as their views don't prevent
you from having and expressing *your* views.

The Francis brigade needs to get over itself.

I've read every post in this thread, and see a bit of light-hearted bigoted humor at very worst. Yes, it's rude, but not intended to harm. You decry ignorance and racism where little is present. Yes, I'm a white guy, so I guess you shut out anything I might say, but I'm not out to get you or to oppress you or to somehow keep you down. I'm just a guy living my life, just like everybody else on this thread. We all know the history and we all understand the hypersensitivity issues regarding race. But do keep in mind that half of the posting farkers are under 30 years of age. They've always live in a multicultural world and are fine with it. None of this is about racial superiority or gut-churning hatred of minorities. You find much offense where little if any is intended. But I guess that you very often do. This article is not even about American black people, but you just have to be offended by anything related to non-whites. Kinda sad.

How do you expect mankind to ever get past this?

I'm not sure how Little Black Sambo is racist, other than that the title points out that he's black. He's an INDIAN kid (and an apparently wealthy one), not an African one, for one thing, which hardly anyone seems to know. Is wearing cool clothes and getting chased up a tree by tigers, whom you trick into running so hard they melt into butter a racist stereotype?

Now, racists certainly coopted the name Sambo, but the book's pretty inoffensive even today, stripped of that context. You could rewrite it as Little Sambo, illustrate it with a medium skin-tone kid, and nobody'd have the slightest problem with anything but the name.

From Wikipedia:

Disproportionate numbers of Māori face significant economic and social obstacles, with lower life expectancies and incomes compared with other New Zealand ethnic groups, in addition to higher levels of crime, health problems and educational under-achievement. Socioeconomic initiatives have been implemented aimed at closing the gap between Māori and other New Zealanders. Political redress for historical grievances is also ongoing.

Porkahantas?

They recently replaced the word "squaw" in all of Maine's official place names. Now we have "Big Moose Mountain", "Moose Creek", etc. One ski area (privately owned) is still called Squaw Mountain. I don't remember what they used to replace all the "Attractive and Successful African American" place names, that happened quite a while ago...

Yeah, the Canadians really surged ahead when they elected a black guy as President.

I think it's all talking a good game. Throughout history, diverse empires have fallen, and homogenous ones have succeeded.

These are still new nations, the US and Canada. Will they even make it to 300 years?

True.. half the Maori worked for the British.. we gave the weaker side guns to kill the other Maori's (normal practise in colonising a country). The one time the Maori did work together and formed a very large fortification it proved incredibly effective as they essentially invented trench warfare to resist the superior British cannons. They also forced the treaty of Waitangi, a treaty celebrated every year on Waitangi day.

I think the distinction between what makes the costume offensive or not is what it is intended to be.

For example, if I put on a giant sombrero and mustache and say "I'm a Mexican," that's racist.

If I put on the same outfit and say "I'm Emilano Zapata," well... GIS "Zapata." Dude dressed like that.

Happy Hours: How is the story racist?

I thought the problem was the pictures with exaggerated physical stereotypes. Oh noes, Sambo was black.

The original pictures were fairly straightforward drawings of a south Indian or Tamil child, with little exaggeration.
upload.wikimedia.org
Some later versions used much more stereotypical images, and changed Sambo from Indian to caricatured African. This comes, unsurprisingly, from Conservapedia:
www.conservapedia.com
Otherwise the story is, as has been said, a charming tale of a bright child who outwits a couple of tigers. It did very well when renamed (and reillustrated) as The Story of Little Babaji.
