A lot.

You didn't even have to go all that far east. Binghamton, NY area hardware stores are reporting people who are literally scared to tears because they can't find one and are just now understanding what this storm may mean.

I am so hoping this thing hangs a right turn and heads out to sea so 1) people are spared its destruction 2) all the tv weather people feel like idiots for spending the last week predicting the apocalypse that didn't happen. At least we got a bit of a break from a few hundred news reports of election poll numbers and over-examined predictions of an electoral college tie for a few days. So there is that.

That's because last year about a month ago, they got hammered by the aftermath of Irene and wasn't pretty.

I worked for a guy that, in the aftermath of Katrina, solved both his looting problem and his lack of entertainment by leaving his generator on his front lawn. Surrounded by shiat covered pungee stakes. While he hid with his weapons in a duck blind nearby.

So keep that in mind when day 5 comes and goes, and you still have no power or water...

I know that my power will be knocked out. It gets knocked out every time someone sneezes too hard. The only question is how long will the power be out.

If it is out for more than 24 hours I'll go through internets withdrawal.

Have you priced one-way rentals lately? The difference between one-way and "in town" could probably also buy you a Ferrari.

I don't understand what the big deal is. It's been predicted for days to hit land as a category 1, hardly enough to blow your skirt up. Last I heard it was sorta breaking up out at sea, even though it's been heading up the gulf stream more or less.

Is it that it's going to combine with a snow storm and all that extra moisture will cause some sort of snowmageddocalypse? Because as it is I didn't go kayaking this weekend because it was going to rain, and now I don't think it's even going to do that here in central NC.

Lamest hurricane ever, and everybody's been panicking for like a week over it. I remain thoroughly nonplussed.

We are supposed to get 4 feet of snow, with 2 of those feet melting rapidly... whatever that means... probably flooding. I know a lot of places where trees are still on powerlines from the derecho, so yeah, no power either.

I thought you said you weren't worried?

No one's panicking up here in Vermont. After Irene last year, everyone's well-prepared, and the power company is bringing in people from out of state to help with possible outages. It'll be wet and windy for a couple days and that'll be about it.

Remember the portable generator goes outside the house. Every storm you hear that someone put it in the garage or basement and died.

I was woken up that morning by a cop with a bullhorn, warning me to grab my valuables and leave the city center immediately. I spent the next two days tearing wet carpet and walls out of the girlfriend's basement, and eyeballing the old mansions on Riverside Drive that had mud up to their upper kitchen cabinets. Not pretty, indeed.

We basically just got everything back how it was this summer. I'm surprised at how many people waited so long to take this seriously, but we've had two "500 year" floods in 6 years, so you'd think people would quit being skeptical by this point. I'm hoping that it's just going to amount to a lot of wind, but I've been helping elderly householders get leaves away from the storm drains today because the city is doing a shiat job of it.
