And will get a big hello smooch from Hurricane Sandy.

$30 million dollars and no spare change for copper cleaner?

2012-10-28 12:56:36 PM
How much will it cost to repair the damage from Sandy though?

Will this be "real" rape or not?

The Lady has been through worse. Seems the French know how to build things to last.

I just wanna go up to the torch once :(

On one hand it sucks we missed it reopening by a week, on the other hand we dont have to deal with a hurricane and unless the hurricane takes her out then we can see her later.....

2012-10-28 01:04:11 PM
I'm not sure how the timing of this could have been any worse.

2012-10-28 01:07:49 PM
Does the subway go there?

Nope, Battery Park and then the ferry.

Normally I'm against frivolous waste of tax dollars. This one I'm OK with, even though I probably won't see it.

One frenchman, and over the past 150 years most of his original structures have been replaced. It's his landmarks that have been maintained to this degree.

The Forth Bridge is about the same age and finally got a decent paint job recently. No French involved.

/Lincoln, OTOH, is slowly dissolving from pigeon poo.

I'm all for better safety and making sure our national monuments are kept-up. But 315 people per day to the crown? Seriously? An extra 26,000 per year? How many more could they have done with another $10 million for additional accessibility?

People in wheelchairs can now reach the top of the pedestal's observation deck at 110 feet, 95 feet higher than before, when wheelchairs couldn't go past ground level.

My friend who is permanently wheel-chair bound I'm sure will appreciate this if she ever gets to NYC again. I hope she does so she can go up :)

We'll just move her out of the way. If we get on eBay we can probably get the supplies we need:

If you've never been to NYC do try to make a vacation some day. So much to see and do, it's wonderful. The New England states are nearby and also offer many beautiful sights.

With the structural improvements, 26,000 more visitors will be able to visit the crown every year. Previously, only 240 people per day could visit; now 315 can.

Is that a post 9/11 daily cap? I went up to the crown in the mid-1990s; I remember it being easy to get tickets and there being little wait.

The French didn't build it. The guy who designed the Eiffel Tower was the architect, they shipped the parts over. Americans excavated the island, built the base, and put the whole thing together.

Doubt they could make it much more accessible - thing's pretty small inside. Only so many people you can cram in per hour.

I'd like them to remove the patina, I know it wouldn't take long for the patina to return, but imagine her in all her copper glory for a little while.

Actually, being French made, I suspect when Sandy arrives, Lady Liberty will put both arms up and surrender.

No fantasizing? Tell that to the crazy British chick who's sexually attracted to the statue.
