I thought the entire point of Holden Caulfield was that he was one of the least cool people imaginable.

Not gonna go through that ridiculously long slide show, but my favorite animal on Animal Farm was always Boxer.

Well, seriously.

Also, Raskolnikov? I mean, it's a great book, but there is no way you could call him cool.

Maybe they just used the word to get more clicks. Ignatius J. Reilly is a repugnant pillow humper, yet ShortList seem to think he represented a revolutionary pushback against consumerism and pop culture.

Wow, that was crappier than usual.

With a few exceptions, any of the main characters from Discworld are a LOT cooler...

My kids favorite(we watch Hogfather every Christmas)

When Holden Caulfield got older though the chicks really dug his sullen outlook of life. He's 6'2", well spoken and rich. Face it - Holden went on to get laid way more than you or I.

In other words, he was working his way towards being a character in a Brett Easton Ellis novel.

/whenever someone says they "identify" with Scrotie McBoogerballs Holden Caulfield I automatically know they're going to be completely insufferable.

I'm disappointed by the lack of Yossarian or Hawkeye Pierce.

Or, in general, anyone who claims to like Catcher in the Rye. I'm pretty sure Salinger was trolling us all when he wrote such an insipid book with an utterly unsympathetic lead.

Tristram Shandy? He is barely even a character in the novel named after him, much less "cool." He's a toddler at the end of it. The book is cool, but it makes no sense to say Tristram is.

No one over the age of 17 can enjoy the book in an unironic sense.

The problem with Ghost Story was that its entire purpose was to set up everything that comes next, so it was more like a story synopsis than an actual novel in my mind. So I completely agree. Considering it's only the second in the series that I I only liked, not loved(Storm Front was the first), I'll cut him some slack however.

But... THIS GUY is directly responsible for making every one I know who's into computers:

What about that hoopy Ford Prefect? There's a frood who really knows where his towel is.

3 of my favorites made the list... Sherlock Holmes, Atticus Finch and James Bond.

Sad that Dr. Allen Grant did not make the list. His character in the book is so much more bad ass then the movie. The man walked out of the desert after falling into a gorge on a dig with a broken leg. Surviving for days being lost. Which explains how he and the kids managed to stay alive when they were lost in the park.

No Jim DeGriz?

The Road is a terrible book.

Dying of thirst? Find a cistern.
Starving? Find a fully stocked bomb shelter.
