This halloween, cover an onion with caramel, put a stick in it and wrap them and give them out to kids. You'll ruin their holiday and you'll go to bed laughing.

I'll take Dan's Candies caramel apples in Joliet over these any day of the week. In fact skip the apple and just give me the caramel please.

Nothing screams fall like crunching into a delicious caramel apple being pushed down a stairwell.

That's a waste of a good onion. And one of the little bastards might remember which house provided the treat.

caramel onion = bad. caramelized onion = good

Marianos grocery store at Roscoe & Western makes them on the spot while you wait.

Looking at those pre-packaged ones in TFA I wonder what year they were made.

Much better to hand out chocolate covered espresso beans and maybe some RedBull to the little beggars,

I stopped reading when the word "gourmet" and "caramel apple" were in the same headline.

Except for Kilwin's on Wells which is apparently a franchise operation based in Michigan aimed at the tourists on Wells St.

I don't think its been there very long.

Niles is a suburb and Wells St is a mile from Navy Pier.

I'll give you that Geneva is out a ways and Cedarburg, WI is a non-contestant.

That's because Chicago style is a caramel-apple casserole.

I used to know a woman who ate onions like apples. She said they tasted like apples. I've never tried that but, when I eat something with a lot of raw, white onion, I get hints of apple so there may be something to the claim.

You could be a trendsetter here.

Sorry Chicago but the word "gourmet" doesn't go with "caramel apples" unless by "gourmet" you things fat people like.

Gourmets in Chicago probably also like their gourmet hot dogs.

2012-10-28 12:14:34 PM
Not a huge-huge fan of these, but, IIRC, Morkes in Palatine can set one up rather well.

2012-10-28 12:33:30 PM
The best caramel apples in the Chicago area were removed from the market 20 years ago when the place that made them from the apples you picked was plowed under you yet another cookie cutter yuppie scum development.

For those that like chairman boobs "Marianos", remember that they have lots of traffic, but reports are that they are not profitable. Right now the Pick-n-save division is keeping them afloat. When the whole thing goes under, expect marianos to be spun off to the current execs who will come out golden, while everything else is up for grabs. Also expect their prices to go through the roof due to the higher cost of leases and expect longer lines as theynlay off

2012-10-28 12:35:58 PM
Sorry, hit the wrong button by accident.
Reports are that the labor costs are on the high side, expect to see layoffs and the lack of customer service that you see at their pick-n-save chain that only has two or three cashiers at peak times and huge lines.

2012-10-28 12:50:05 PM
Yes Kilwins is a chain. But it seriously rocks for all kinds of sweets.

I live by Amy's in Cedarburg. Not worth the drive.
It is well worth going to the town during the strawberry festival, or as a stop when passing by, there are a couple of wineries in the area, but Amy's as a destination will be a major disappointment.

Nice to see Affy Tapple is represented. Surprised there is another apple place on Gross Point Road, considering Affy Tapple was a few blocks away. And personally I feel Niles is more of a neighborhood than a suburb, with its location.

Hey now, don't call me Shirley.

Internet connection under my rock is sporadic, this year's the first year I've heard of it.
