I'll miss this thread as I'm on vacation in Orlando right now, but I hope for some Timmysprinkles action against the Fins. I also hope that the Chargers have distracted officials enough that we can replace Mike Wallace's hands with solid blocks of Stickem, as it's my only hope of getting points out of his dumb ass in FF.

I don't have a funny picture for the Bears/Panthers game this week, so instead let's ask BJ Raji what he thinks about playing Jacksonville today.

The good news is that apparently the hurricane won't be hitting here in Maryland until Monday morning, so I should get to enjoy the games today. The bad news is that I lose power pretty much every time we get a decent-sized storm (lost it for nearly a week following Irene), so I probably won't be on here for Monday Night Football & might not be able to post my recap in the Tuesday thread. At any rate...

Following a triumphant return to form in the shape of a 10-3 week 7, the overall season mark stands at 64-39. Not bad, but still not good enough for a purf perfict guy who likes perfect stuff, like me. Some more very tough picks to make this week, though at least partially offset by the fact that I don't have to choose my Ravens again; but not unlike Rosie O'Donnell at an all-you-can-eat buffet, I'm up for the challenge. Winners in bold, as always:

Carolina Panthers at Chicago Bears:
On paper this looks like a laugher for the Bears, which worries me; we've seen all too many instances of strong teams playing down to their opponent's level this season. I'm still not quite courageous stupid enough to pick Cam Newton to lead an upset against a team which leads the league in interceptions & ranks 5th in sacks, though. A bad day for Jay Cutler keeps this one close, but Chicago still squeaks out a victory.

San Diego Chargers at Cleveland Browns:
Pop quiz: name the team with the #1 defense against the run so far this season. If you said "the San Diego Chargers", you win an invisible prize! San Diego has allowed exactly one less yard through six games than the Chicago Bears, making their 71.2 yards/game against tops in the league, while the mere two rushing touchdowns they've given up ties them for fourth (Houston has amazingly not yielded a rushing TD through 7 contests). While Brandon Weeden has done pretty well so far, as has the Browns' defense, I don't believe this is one they can win.

Seattle Seahawks at Detroit Lions:
In three home games, the Seahawks have dominated Dallas and eked out wins against Green Bay* and New England; in four road matches, they have lost to Arizona, St. Louis, and San Francisco while narrowly defeating the Carolina Panthers. Detroit has certainly not played well this season, but they've been good enough against the run: 16th in yards/game, but only 1 rushing touchdown against them despite having faced guys like Frank Gore, Adrian Peterson, Stephen Jackson, and LeSean McCoy. My prediction is for an ugly game with one of those 12-10ish final scores, with Detroit coming out on top.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Green Bay Packers:
With Maurice Jones-Drew out of the game I'd be tempted to pick a random group of 11 guys off the street to beat Jacksonville. I don't often look at the Vegas odds, but even giving 20 points I'd put my money on Green Bay if I were forced to bet.

Miami Dolphins at New York Jets:
The Dolphins actually come into this game with the better record at 3-3, and heaven knows I'm not a supporter of the Jets or anything they stand for. Add in the fact that Miami is coming off their bye week and it's very tempting to pick the Fins here, but I just can't bring myself to do it. Divisional game, New York at home, Ryan's boys having just taken New England into OT while Mark Sanchez actually had a good game...my instinct tells me the green & white take this one convincingly.

Atlanta Falcons at Philadelphia Eagles:
If Andy Reid is smart...well, okay, we all know that's not the case, but he still should have had Michael Vick holding on to a football for their entire bye week. But really, the keys here are that Atlanta has won their last 3 games (against powerhouses Carolina, Washington, and Oakland) by a combined 12 points, and Philadelphia has never lost under Reid in a game after a bye week. Never, going all the way back to the 1999 season. With those two facts being quite well-known, I'm not even sure this will qualify as an upset pick.

Washington Redskins at Pittsburgh Steelers:
It pains me to pick the Steelers in this one, as I'll certainly be rooting against them today (Baltimore needs all the help we can get at this point), but again...I have to give this team respect for consistently pulling out victories when they're most needed. It also helps that they bring the second-ranked pass defense in the league against a rookie quarterback, while Washington counters with their 32nd-ranked pass D against one of the better veterans at the position.

New England Patriots "at" St. Louis Rams:
With the two teams facing off on another continent (one that's free of earthquakes, tsunamis, and hurricanes...for now), but at least on offense the veteran Patriots should handle the travel and spotlight a little better. And while the Rams are 3-1 at home with their only loss coming to the red-hot Packers last weekend, London certainly isn't "home" for them...and they are a perfect 0-3 on the road, including losses to the 2-4 Lions and 3-3 Dolphins. I expect New England to get by pretty easily in Old England.

Indianapolis Colts at Tennessee Titans:
Yuck. A divisional game in which one team (Indy) clearly looks better on paper but is 0-2 on the road this season, while the other is riding a two-game winning streak & is 2-1 at home so far (with their loss being to the Patriots in week 1). Plus, while the Titans boast the worst defense since Poland circa 1939, Indy's stats appear somewhat more respectable largely due to having played Minnesota, Jacksonville, Cleveland, and the Jets so far (and they gave up 20+ points in all but the Cleveland game, including 35 to the Jets). Logically I should be picking the Titans here, but Mr. Gut is still screaming "Colts" at me, so there you go. Whoever wins, I'd bet the over.

Oakland Raiders at Kansas City Chiefs:
Yay, another divisional contest between two subpar teams! Neither the Raiders nor the Chiefs have looked anything close to good thus far, but in K.C.'s case at least it can be traced directly back to a single glaring flaw: turnovers. Kansas City is not only worst in the league in turnover ratio, they are far and away the worst: 6 behind 31st-ranked Philadelphia. The Chefs do have the home field in what truly is a bitter traditional rivalry, though, and I'm not too certain Oakland can stop Jamaal Charles & the running attack, nor take advantage of enough turnover opportunities to let Kansas City beat themselves.

New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys:
This rematch of the season-opening shocker will follow a vastly different course. Ever since that fourth quarter in week 2 Eli Manning & the Giants offense have been on fire, while the Cowboys have only gotten over the 20 point barrier once since their victory in the Meadowlands (in a game they lost anyway). Payback can indeed be a biatch.

New Orleans Saints at Denver Broncos:
Their current two-game winning streak might have given Saints' fans some glimmer of hope for this one, but unfortunately for them the Broncos' defense isn't Tampa Bay, and Peyton Manning is definitely not Philip Rivers. Denver's only loss at Mile High this season was to a much more balanced Houston team, while their two victories include a week 1 win against Pittsburgh & a 31-point spanking of the Raiders. Drew Brees always gives you a shot, but it's a very, very long one here.

San Francisco 49ers at Arizona Cardinals:
Remember that symmetry thing from last week? Well, the Niners are due for another victory, while the Cards are scheduled for their fourth straight loss after rattling off four consecutive wins to start the season. Simply put, Arizona has not looked anything like the team which started 4-0 in tallying their recent losses to St. Louis, Buffalo (at home), and Minnesota. Strange as this sounds, John Skelton is no Kevin Kolb, and the running game just isn't getting its job done for the Cardinals. San Fran, on the other hand, should run all over their 20th-ranked rushing defense.

i missed i think the last two weeks and missed the thursday game. obligations suck!

New England -7 St. Louis (At London) 46.5

STL to cover, I don't think NE is as good as believed and Rams I think are better than perceived.

@Tennessee -3.5 Indianapolis 46.5
Indy, not sure why Tennessee is favored.

@Green Bay -16 Jacksonville 45.5
yeeeeeeeeeeesh! Line of the year? Too many points at the NFL level, Jax to cover. I know Jax is playing awful but that's just too many damn points.

San Diego -3 At Cleveland 41
curious comments out of San Dog last week, with the GM basically saying playoffs of pink slip for Norvell. i forget the exact quote but it was like, "the team needs to respond and finish strong and win the division, and if we don't, we'll have a new era of Charger football."

actually, here's the exact quote:

"I take full responsibility for the present mess this team is in at this point in time," Smith said. "The construction and direction of this organization is on my watch. In the next 10 games we will either rally and see a slow, steady rise from the ashes to a division championship - or the beginning of a new era in Chargers' football."
yay ringing endorsement.

anyways.....SD outright.

@ Philadelphia -3 Atlanta 42
what? easy money. ATL outright.

@Detroit -2.5 Seattle 42.5
another puzzling line. detroit i guess should be favored but no. Seatown walks.

@ NY Jets -1.5 Miami 38.5
remember Bryan Cox walking into Joe Robbie or whatever they called it, pregame with his middle fingers out? that was awesome. Gonna say Miami here outright.

@Chicago -7.5 Carolina 42
huh. should be more IMO. I'll say Carolina covers this as when a big line goes small, something's going on the public doesn't know, Carolina covers

@Pittsburgh -4 Washington 44
odd number for this piont of the season.......gahh........Gonna say Wash covers.

@Kansas City -1 Oakland 42
man. a combined 3-9 record with KC with juts one win. the pride of East Bay walks.

NY Giants -2.5 At Dallas 48
just a national line, NYG should be favored by 4 at least. BUT Eli hasn't gone full Eli in a while -- you know, the 2 TD, 4INT, 13-29, 110 yard Eli -- so I think Dallas sneaks by in this one but in low single digits. i'll say dallas outright in a minor upset (minor because frankly, NYG isn't thaaaaaaaat good and dallas i don't think thaaaaat bad).

@ Denver -6.5 New Orleans 55
Huh...........hmmm.......i don't doubt that the Donks will win but that number is off. doesn't feel right. against better judgment i'll say Donks outright. but that number is goofy.

Monday Night Football Line

10/29 8:40 ET San Francisco -7 At Arizona 38

love my redbirds.....betting from the heart not mind i'll say cover.

Brady Quinn, if you turn into a competent QB for 2 months and not only ruin our chances of getting Matt Barkley, but convince Scott Pioli to giving you a 3 year $28 million contract, my dog and myself will find your house - wherever it might be - and crap on it. Probably jut my dog, but it really depends on how many beers I've had when we find it. This I swear.

Not sure how much I'll be able to post here, on account of this hurricane business, but this is a pretty meh week for me anyway. Bengals and Ravens are on byes and the Ponies don't play 'til tonight. I'm only hoping for two things out of the afternoon games:

* for Washington to beat the Pittsburgh Hornets.
* for NE@STL to create an international incident that puts an end to this London silliness.

Other than that, yay football.

"On October 2, 2005, the first international regular-season game in the history of the NFL was played in the stadium between the San Francisco 49ers and the Arizona Cardinals. The game was a 31-14 victory for the Cardinals and held the record of the largest crowd to attend a regular season NFL game with 103,467."
