davidphogan: I'm in Seattle this weekend, and didn't notice a thing here.

Checking both KOMO and KING websites, seems like no one in Seattle gave a shiat.

The epicentre is just a few klicks north of Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve boundary.

http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/pn-np/bc/gwaiihaanas/edu.aspx

Hope my colleagues up there are OK, and there's no damage to the cultural resources--and likewise the danger of a 'rebound' tsunami.

Other side of BC practically.

Up the coast, actually.

Eh, good point.

I was just emphasizing that this is impacting Vancouver in no spectacular way.

Not many people in BC do, either.

Yep... In fact, if someone mentions "Haida Gwaii", most people pause for a couple of seconds, and then go "Oh, you mean the Queen Charlotte Islands"

Probably just us in gumment, then; especially since we work with the First Nations to manage Gwaii Haanas, and are used to saying it.

Worth noting that the tsunami warning is serious enough that one has supposedly been "observed."

If HAARP were to be used to create an October Surprisequake it would seem that New Madrid would be a better ROI than wasting remote islands in Canada. Though that 3.5 in western MT earlier this evening was odd.

The magnitudes being talked about are based on the log10 scale. As such, a 7.7 is ~500 times as strong as a 5.0 (10^(7.7-5) ~ 501). According to Wiki, in terms of energy release, it's 22 petajoules vs. 2.2 terajoules; in other words, ~10,000 times as much energy is released in a 7.7 than a 5.0.
