(AL.com)   You know that picture of an Alabama sorority girl holding a poorly-spelled, anti-Obama message scrawled on the back of a pizza box? Turns out she's really from Boston, her school doesn't have a Greek system, and she's pro-Obama   (blog.al.com) divider line 226

Scott_Free: Actually, north Alabama has the highest percentage of people with graduate degrees in the United States (per capita). Also, the prime minister and deputy prime minister of Libya are Alabama natives. These are things they don't teach you in school.

Would that 'concentration of graduate degrees' still exist without Redstone housing a big design and test facility for NASA? Doubt it.

But even there, still a hell of a lot of Jesus fish and Wednesday night church goers.

Actually, NASA has almost nothing to do with it. Army R @ D and testing is the main driver of the local economy. People think Alabama is redneck central. The diversity and composition of north Alabama is amazing and rivaled by no place I have ever visited. And, we have more religious tolerance than most places. Stereotypes are a hard thing to change move to north Alabama. Come and visit here. You will want to move here after visiting. it is truly a gem that has not been discovered by most people.

Also, i am a good friend with the prime minister of Libya. Where else do you get this type of diversity? Alabama is a maligned place. Stereotypes are common, but wrong.

As I'm pretty sure you already know but don't want to mention, your stats are drastically skewed by the minimal rural populace of north Alabama compared to Huntsville and Birmingham. Those two cities are indeed minimally affected by the Alabama Time Warp (10-20 years, tops). There are plenty of regions (particularly south Alabama) where it's like stepping back between 50-100 years.

I worked at NASA there for several months and I still found it to be a redneck infested shiat hole where I was constantly being beat over the head with bibles. The only places I find worse than Alabama are southwestern VA and Texas. Move there? I never even want to visit there again. I hated every second of that giant Jesusfreak encampment.

There are a lot of places that are far more interesting than the HSV area - and I've been lucky enough that since my brief period of misery there to actually spend my time in those places. San Diego, Denver, Minneapolis and San Jose all are far preferable to Huntsville. shiat, I'd even pick Detroit before I'd go back there.

Sure, I agree. But north Alabama, Huntsville is one of the most progressive places in the United States. I live there, and I take exception to anyone calling it out. It is one of the best places to live, period.

Visit New York City for a week, particularly Queens, then reread this comment. You'll facepalm yourself into next week.

I used to be impressed by the relative oases of civilization that are Huntsville and Birmingham, too. Loved them to death, after escaping south Alabama. But "far better than godawful" is not the same as "the best". (^_~)

I agree totally But that doesn't change what the north Alabama region is. It is not New York city, but it is a very diverse region, not stereotypical of the south. And even with what New York has to offer, the people are dicks compared to the hospitality Huntsville and the surrounding areas have. Been there, done that. I lived in NY, CT, the people there are assholes.

Same thing happened at the Tea Party rallies. Democrats brought signs that were either racist or had misspellings and they pretended to be Tea Party supporters. And that's nothing compared to this:

Two former local Democratic party officials from Michigan face up to 14 years behind bars for allegedly forging paperwork to put fake Tea Party candidates on the November 2010 ballot. Former Oakland County Democratic Chair Mike McGuinness and former Democratic Operations Director Jason Bauer were indicted on a total of nine felony charges this week, local station WJBK reports.

She's to young to realize this humor approach does not work with conservatives. Too subtle, too high brow. They need pie-in-the-face formats to get it.

They have no idea they're being ridiculed, that they are the butt of the joke. Witness this thread where people say she's a fake out to make them look bad. Fascinating: someone pretending to look like a moron is evil while being a moron is all fark Yeah!

She fully understands what she is doing. The people she is making fun of are not expected to 'get it.' She is doing it for the benefit of her libby buddies. People like her and her friends have been around for decades. They make fun of others to look 'cool' to the other people in their clique. Nasty people that when karma comes a calling on them later in life, I smile just a little on the inside.

Exactly. It should be "its" because "village" is an inanimate object. Inanimate objects don't possess things in the English language.

Actually, after further thought, I'm retracting my previous statement. Though confusingly stated, I believe she meant to say something like, "It should be 'its', not 'their'. Because 'their' would be correct only if 'village' was plural, and it's not. It's singular. Furthermore, there should not be an apostrophe since 'its' is not a contraction in this case."

I'm assuming she didn't actually write the statement, but said it verbally to the reporter/interviewer who then transcribed it. In that context the statement makes sense, since you wouldn't know which its/it's she meant without the no apostrophe comment.
