Be careful. GAT cries to a mod every time someone calls him out. I've been bannister a few times. He's sends give, I guess. As sensitive as the mods are fat.

Some of the bigger trolls around here have mods covering for them.

Once a particularly racist, antagonistic troll appeared. Somebody called him out, suspecting him of being the alt of another poster, a regular here who trolls on one specific topic, but is less blatant about his trolling.

The alt was confirmed when he posted with his regular login denying that he was the alt of his regular login. I got a screenshot of it.

I called this troll out later when he was saying things that basically directly contradicted what his more well known login says regularly, pretty much diametrically. I posted a screenshot of his admission that he's someones trolling alt.

Posts deleted and I got a little vacation from Fark. I posted proof that a new troll was a regular farkers alt, and got smacked for it. I'd say who is who's alt, but can't for obvious reasons. Apparently this regular is rumored to have a modmin login too (and a number of troll alts).

Yeah, mods are covering for some of the trolls. The conspiracy theory that some of the trolls are shiat-stirrers assigned by Drew to drive clicks has some weight to it.

Not to bring politics into it, but I suspect this widely held assumption is the reason so many right-leaning people view Michelle Obama as being fat. The fact that the First Lady isn't fat doesn't seem to occur to them. Well, she's a black woman, therefore she must be fat, seems to be the line of "thinking" there.

brantgoose: Black women, like all women, may feel they have to be guardians of the race and thus be less inclined to pick a white male partner, even if he offers status or some other benefit above and beyond what can be had by acquiring a black male mate.

I just remember from my time at school, most black women simply would not consider a white man. And, if asked, they were quite open and honest about their disinterest in anything but black men. Asian women, however, seemed to prefer white men to Asian men. And, by Asian, I mean both South Asian (Indian, Pakistani) and East Asian (Japanese, Korean, Chinese). I honestly felt bad for the Asian guys. Black guys and white guys, on the other hand, had no problem getting girls.

Actually, that's pretty much how I spell doom.

It's just a thought experiment, relax. He's putting forward the idea that we're so far from perfect and should never become complacent. Of course it runs now while a lot of us are going in to vote early to get it over with. He's not actually saying we haven't accomplished anything or that we shouldn't be proud, he's saying that we can't stop where we are. We have to improve.

It's inspiring in a way.

You're kidding. I see them all the time.

Meanwhile, back to privacy - a lot of people back in the day shared beds. I mean like the entire family shared a bed. All the kids would share a bed. No McMansions - small, small houses with very few beds. Certainly, the concept of privacy is very different now. We worry about the government spying on us, when a bit further back, our entire community and especially our family, knew exactly what was going on.

Challam: I'm an alien from 1942 and find so much more of our modern culture dystopian than the few items in the article... the assumption that every corporation is intrinsically evil...

Capitalism, at least capitalism as it is practiced in 21st century america (though I suspect it was always so), rewards evil. Those entrepreneurs who choose to be honest and above board in their dealings, who follow honest business practices not because the law says so but because it's the right thing to do, who treat their customers (not consumers), their employees and their suppliers with respect, and who do all they can to provide the very best in products and services to those customers... will fail.

Those businesses and their owners who lie, cheat, skimp on quality and service, sacrifice their employees welfare for short term gain, and put profit above everything else - as opposed to seeing profits as a natural outgrowth of doing good business - turn into huge multinational corporations.

Good has a conscience, and will not do things that will hurt others to succeed.
Evil doesn't care what it has to do to succeed, and so it will.

brantgoose: HotIgneous Intruder: Why is it always a picture of a white woman with a black man?
Why not a black woman with a white man?
Think about it.

It is almost always a white woman with a black man in real life. It goes the other way less frequently.

Why is this? There are cultural and economic reasons I think. A black man with a white woman is rising socially. Women raise the children, do the dirty work, but a white woman is a social plus to a black man even if she is not going to put up with so much shiat (whether she does or not is not something I know but since some of these women are getting a younger, handsomer, more "fun" mate, they might). Black men may also be looking for a bossier woman (just like Mom) or one who is less demanding (unlike Mom). In any case, whatever the psychology, sociology, politics, economics, it is clearly sex-relevant.

Black women, like all women, may feel they have to be guardians of the race and thus be less inclined to pick a white male partner, even if he offers status or some other benefit above and beyond what can be had by acquiring a black male mate. Or maybe they're just more likely to be lesbians. The data is all over the place. It proves little or nothing.

In any case, that is the way it really works now. It might even out over a longer period of time as society changes. Pictures tend to show the "normal" or the "probable" rather than the unusual when editors and journalists write articles on such issues. It has heuristic value although it leads to a distinct lack of statistical accuracy.

According to Gary Becker and a few others you can understand it on class/economics basis.

Most people (tend to) select partners from own familiar groups

Higher value (usually income) black men marry lower level white women

Lower value white guys marry high value (good looking, younger, slimmer) Asian women

Theoretically this should create an imbalance where a surplus of Asian men should be chasing a surplus of black women, but that never happens

Obviously these are generalizations, and I'm sure you can offer exceptions to test the rule.

But an interesting explanatory principle

When I was at GA Tech in the 90s I experienced first hand what you are describing. But in addition to not wanting to date non-black men, the black women *hated* when black men dated anyone other than black women. Not a universal observation of course, but it happened often enough that I still remember it.

Everyone thinks the past is what they said it was in movies or history books. My uncle who died last year at the tender age of 93 told stories of the Pendergast mob run Kansas City that would turn your hair white and curl it. The best lunch restaurant in town was the Chesterfield and the waitress's uniform was high heels and a smile. Nothing but gorgeous T&A and nobody smaller than a C. The evening's entertainment was cabaret which included live sex shows with 10 to 20 couples participating. Think the Superman scene in Godfather 2 but with performers in their teens and 20s. According to him that's what put KC on the map, made Truman FDR's last VP which allowed the mob to use union money to build Vegas and launder all the mob money. Behind the Green Door and the Mitchell brothers' O'Farrell theater in Frisco were just a pale shadow of the wide open Kansas City.

I suspect any visitor from the past would find elements both good and bad. They'd marvel at our airplanes, think antibiotics and vaccines were pretty cool ("Yay! Now half my children don't have to die from disease before they reach adulthood!") And they'd LOVE things like indoor plumbing and central heating. Of course, there would probably be a lot of stuff they hate, as mentioned in the article.

But I think the main thing they would be doing is asking us why the hell we're so miserable when we live in a world of wondrous machines that do everything for us. We don't have to spend 16 hours baling hay, grading roads, or doing laundry every day like they did. We have enough farmland and food in this country to feed everyone a dozen times over. And yet we're still working our asses off, taking no vacations and popping antidepressants and painkillers like candy to make our lives tolerable. Why are we doing this to ourselves, they'd ask us. It's like Louis CK said,- everything's amazing and nobody's happy. I think people from the past would feel that we've squandered our chance at happiness, because we're alienated from each other and have crap values. Such a shame.

I'm pretty sure I've read studies that have shown that racial selectivity when it comes to dating is most all on the women's part- men across all cultures are more open to dating women of all races (though of course, when it comes to marriage, some will still bow to their families demands). But women were much more racially selective.

Also, the guys I've (vaguely known and been kinda grossed out by in school) who were black and and wanted to date only white women, were basically like the black counter parts of the white guys who only want to date asian women. I know, most people immediately go to the whole banging white women as a status symbol, because they couldn't before, but what I always heard from them was how white women were less angry and controlling than black women, less likely to accuse them of cheating or to keep track of their location at all times. Of course, these guys were also the assholes who should be getting yelled at, often were cheating, and generally treated women in ways that would make me yell at them too. So basically, they thought white women were more submissive and would tolerate more of their crap, so rather than acting differently they simply chose women they figured would have less of a backbone.

This probably figures in to why some black women really hate it when black men date white women, kind of like how white women are often skeeved out by the white guys who only date asian women. Obviously I don't think that's the case for all interracial couples in that gender combination, I think most of it is just guys dating who will say yes to them, but I can see why black women would get angry. Even if many men are just being men and interested in all women, the few jerks who are vocal definitely get them riled up. The history there is different, and so are the percentages of population. There are way more white women in the US than asian women, and far more white men than black men, so it is much easier for black men to opt out of dating black women entirely. If black women don't want to date men of other races, it kind of leaves them stuck.

You know how I know these guys have never been with a Scottish redhead or dated a Jewish woman? Being around a Jewish woman makes you understand why the character Hesh in the Sopranos stuck to black women for 50 years.

Yeah, factory work is so dystopian that new england farmers couldn't keep their kids from fleeing to the cities to work in factories when that option first became available in the first half of the 19th century. Of course, that was new england, and as one englishman said, no one in their right mind would try to make a living farming there.

And then they died young from tuberculosis if they weren't killed by the hideously unsafe working conditions. All this for the glorious wages of 5 cents a day.
