namegoeshere: SFSailor: Really REALLY don't like how long it takes to have a hurricane. The lead up, the vague predictions, the anxiety, the long storm itself, etc. Criminey. At this point, let's just do this thing. Earthquakes are best disaster I think.

Good luck and stay safe, farkers. And go Giants!

Nah, because they're over before you know they're happening. Now tsunamis, there's a good disaster. You get a few hours to get cameras and Jim Cantore on scene, but there's none of this dragging it out for days and days.

vabeard: Mrbogey: As a resident of the New Orleans area, I have little concern for people outside of the gulf coast facing hurricanes. It's karma as far as I'm concerned.

Karma for whom?

For those making fun of earthquakes on the west coast, of course.

It's difficult to make out, but Justice Scalia was in the film Nuclear Hurricane?!?!?

GAT_00: If one goes up, I've got my money on the Vermont Yankee plant.

Perhaps too far inland (although some of Irene's worst damage was in Vermont). I'd guess Indian Point, because it's got a history of safety issues AND it's located right on the tidal part of the Hudson River (storm surge+high tide=bad/Syfy movie).

/I just want to wish Worcester good luck, I'm counting on you to still be there when I return

Power companies have failed badly latelty through lack of preparedness and penny pinching. CL&P was caught with their pants down.  I don't live in that state.  Even in a a moderate storm, they get nailed.  But the rates go up every year and anything over a breeze causes a week long blackout, while they charge you for the service you don't get..  Gonna get the kid to haul the generator out of the basement.  Just in case. Give it a run. Goining to get some gas as well and fill 2 cars.  In the end if it isn't needed, if goes in the car.  Food bought still gets eaten.  Just up front costs on a week or two in the future.  Spend now, use it later. Noreasters are a fact of life here.  Simple and normal.  Just prepare, but don't be stupid.
