Silly Jesus: CreamFilling: stoli n coke: The actual statistics have shown the overwhelming majority of African Americans have voted Democratic since Kennedy and LBJ. May have had something to do with the whole "pushing for and signing the civil rights act" deal.

Those are the statistics for people who voted. The actual percentage of eligible African Americans who voted at all was barely above 50%. Certainly not an overwhelming majority of African Americans as a whole voting for any particular party. In 2008, the number of eligible African Americans who voted jumped 20%. Of course you can't ascribe any one motivation to why African American turnout suddenly leaped in 2008, but you'd have to be absolutely farking stupid to believe that race wasn't a factor.

[blog.2modern.com image 340x480]

Since black people are willing to support a politician simply because he's also black means what exactly? Jim Crowe is a-okay or something? Is this suppose to be some sort of justification for something else? That's certainly what you seem to allude to.

Debeo Summa Credo: Halli: Debeo Summa Credo: Halli: Debeo Summa Credo: Its hard to suggest that Obama was a much stronger candidate than Kerry,

lol wut?

Sorry, I skipped a few words. it's hard to suggest that the reason for Obama doing so much better than Kerry among blacks was solely because he was a better candidate, because other Dem candidates who were clearly superior to the GOP candidate (like Clinton in '96) did much worse among blacks than Obama did.

Obama also posted gains similar or greater amongst Asians and Hispanics. I wonder why that is.

While you are correct that obama did better among hispanics than kerry, if you compare to how he did againsy the last dem candidate to win he did worse.

Obama beat McCain 95-4 among blacks, 67-31 among Hispanics.

Clinton beat Dole 84-12 among blacks, 73-21 among hispanics. In other words, Obama did MUCH better among blacks than Clinton did, while clinton did significantly better among hispanics.

The only real historic statistical outlier is Obama's performance among blacks.

Huh that 73 number could be considered a statistical outlier. But we were talking about Kerry and 2004. Minorities overall flocked to the Dems. Surely there must be a reason for that.

2012-10-28 01:09:32 AM

Halli: Minorities overall flocked to the Dems. Surely there must be a reason for that

Have you heard the way some conservatives talk about them publically? Have you seen the laws enacted that tend to have some sort of negative outcome for minorities? I believe the answer to both of those are 'yes' and the reason they tend to not just flock to Dems, but run far away from Repubs.

The election shouldn't really be about race anyhow. It should be about whether or not you're willing to hand off the car keys to the same type of turdbiscuits that crashed the last one.

2012-10-28 01:24:54 AM

Smelly McUgly: In the end, this thread shows the mentality of your typical Republican. Instead of looking inward and saying, "What can we do to honestly reach out to black folks," they instead lash out and try to claim WELL DEMOCRATS AND BLACKS ARE RACIST TOO, EVEN MORE THAN WE ARE.

You see it all the time. President Obama loses a debate according to popular opinion - Democratic voters fret and worry and honestly criticize the President's approach. Governor Romney loses a debate according to popular opinion, and OH NO LIBRUL MEDIA IS OUT TO GET US ACTUALLY ROMNEY WON WITH THE SILENT MAJORITY AND THOSE POLL NUMBERS MEAN NOTHING.

This is why the Republicans will continue to marginalize themselves. They dictate to their audience rather than listen to them at all times, no matter what.

Oh, yeah. In everything. It's always because "they do it too" or "somebody else is doing X" or "we know what the people REALLY want". And, usually, there are enough yup-yups and yes-men surrounding them to assure them of what they want to hear, regardless of what happens.

And regardless of how the election pans out, the same thing will happen: If Obama wins, they've convinced themselves it's because the "liberal media" and Democrat spinmeisters and assorted evildoers have stolen their election, distorted their message and twisted the polls against them. If Romney wins, it will be because their message got out DESPITE those same evil whoevers and somehow got through to their True Believers and etc. etc.

I've been re-reading Hunter Thompson's "Great Shark Hunt" and it's pretty shocking, how much things haven't changed since Nixon was campaigning against Humphrey---and how little things haven't changed since Humphrey was campaigning against McGovern. It's all the same crap.

What does it say about America when half of it's voting citizens favor a party that is constantly belittling women, is racist, pro war, anti infrastructure, anti science, anti evolution, pro creationism, anti labor, and constantly endorse the erosion of educational programs?

Seriously, Americans are the dumbest people in the developed world, you'd have to go to a mud hut in the middle of India to find more ignorance.

I have some very intelligent, very conservative friends. Their positions are extremely well reasoned.

They just are based on assumptions that are contradicted by well established evidence, but they relentlessly ignore such evidence. If pressed they will insist the main stream media (which does not include the highest rated news network or 90% of talk radio) is wrong.

I like them. I like you. I cannot fathom why intelligent people remain so willfully - note, willfully - ignorant.

I was just talking about this scenario with the husband the other day. How can you get through to people who are genuinely good people but who don't see that they are prejudiced? And I'm not saying that I'm not prejudiced - I am, it's the way we are all programmed in our society - but I acknowledge my prejudices and I actively work against them.

It seems like the white people I know either 'get it' or they don't when it comes to race. Those who don't get it really believe that they are suffering from reverse racism, etc.

HOW did you come to see that you were prejudiced? And is there a way we can replicate that experience on a mass scale?

I think the only way people like that will ever "get it" is to see someone they know and respect/love/care about be effected by racism.

that's the conclusion we came to, as well. Which is a little disheartening when you think that the people I'm talking about don't tend to be friends with anyone from a different race. Well, except for the one "black friend" that they have to prove to themselves they're not racist, of course

I could give a flying fark whether black people are voting for Obama because he's black. When you are brought to a country in chains, watch your children taken from you and sold to the highest bidder, remain second-class citizens after emancipation, are forced to drink from separate drinking fountains, use different bathrooms and send your children to inferior schools, and are not allowed to vote for generations - all because of the color of your skin - then I have no problem with you voting for a president whose skin is the same color as yours.

The election of the first black POTUS was/is historic and important, and I applaud black Americans for wanting to be a part of it. Obama's election was a big farking deal.

Anyone who believes that a black person voting for Obama because he's black and a white person voting for Romney because he's white are in any way morally equivalent is a racist.

True.

And while I applaud him for having the guts to come right out and say that, I'm having a very hard time figuring out how the problem gets fixed. Most Republicans won't even admit it to themselves... and if they can't admit the problem; they certainly can't fix it. But in general, I don't see a clear path to reducing or eliminating racism from our society and culture.

intelligent comment below: I don't know one position of Colin Powell that is Republican besides the fact of the old myth that the military always votes GOP

You know it wasn't him, but one of his former aides, Lawrence Wilkerson, who said it, right? Powell was a moderate Republican from his time. The modern Republican party has moved so far towards the extreme that at this point Powell would look downright liberal today... He was very much a Republican, but Republicans just aren't what they used to be.

stoli n coke: JerkStore: Yes. Yes it is.

We're all racist in some way or another. People who claim they don't see color are liars, we all see it and it affects us in some way. Most of us actively work to overcome these parts of ourselves and it makes us ashamed to have these thoughts. Others, not so much. So I have this idea that all these distractions about Obama are just reasons that racists have to make it OK to hate him. They can't say he's a bad president because he's black, but it's perfectly OK for them to hate him because he's a socialist. So they have concocted all these lies about who he is and what he's done so they feel justified in hating him so they don't have to admit they just don't like the black guy in the White House.

That became apparent the day after the 2008 election, when republicans suddenly became concerned over the economy at the same time.

Not living in the US, I didn't see much of their turnaround on the economy. What really showed through, though, was how all the claims that "criticizing the president during wartime is giving aid and comfort to the enemy" vanished overnight.

"What does it take to change the essence of a man?"

If I knew the magic trick to changing a viewpoint I'd rule the world, but I *think* one more-effective method is to point it out in other unrelated people and work your way in. Slide in edgeways with the black guy who hates the chinese or the atheist who hates the religious (that second one plays well with the victim-complex types) and sidle up closer with examples of OTHER white people who "don't see color but never rent to a black man" before pointing out their own subtle cues.

Oh, and I don't know the answer to the other question. Morality plays and upbringing led me to believe that one should never lie to oneself, a random class in social psychology taught me we're all secretly sheeple (and taught me the proper terms for subconscious racism, which I promptly forgot), and I have always been taught that an American should struggle against that herding instinct.

Enough complicated thoughts of philosophy and psychology! Hatred is the emperor's greatest gift to humanity!
