For the record: I'm a conservative in favor of fully funding all scientific endeavors. I'm royally pissed that NASA has been cut.

Yes, I want stem cell research. Yes I want Darwin taught in school. I believe in God yet don't force my ideas about him on my kids. I want them inquisitive and intellectually honest so that maybe, just maybe, they can get closer to the truth than I have.

Let's continue to look, to investigate, is all I'm saying.

If the same contractors who built satellites built a doghouse, there would be four walls, no roof and no door. The roof would be added in Block 2, and the door would be added on later in a non-contract addition costing nine times the original cost of the doghouse.

Only politicians would think your saving money by not spending a billion now versus billions on cleanup later. Penny wise, pound foolish - meet your textbook example!

buzzcut73: BolivarShagnasty: This would never have happened if Santorum could privatize weather forecasting and defunding NOAA like he wanted.

The only conclusion I could come up with when he was talking about that is that Santorum is an idiot.
All of those private forecasting companies (TWC, your local news channel, etc) use the government satellite pictures and radar to come up with their predictions (which aren't usually any better or worse than what NOAA comes up with...because they all use the same data!)

I just recently had an exchange with a Teabagger about this. Willful ignorance can't process the fact that these images are coming from the government.
"But I saw it on Fox 5's news, they get their own images."
"They get the images from the government."
"No, they have private sources."
"Do they have their own satellites?"
"Um..." wanders off

s1ugg0: This really is unacceptable. When you consider all the named storms that hit the United States each year and the damage they cause to property and commerce.

Why in god's name is predicting these storms not a top priority for our government?

Because Tea Baggers in congress.

Why have the government do it when they can contract it out at twice the price?

Go for it, Sport. I can't think of one damn thing stopping you from going right ahead and doing it better than anyone else. Who knows, you might make some money if you do a good job. Hell, give it away for free if you like. So get busy. I'm sure you'll have something ready by Monday morning.

Oh, by the way, we do have this thing called the National Hurricane Center that does nothing but, um, I can't remember. But they do something.

And NCEP. They run the numeric weather models. Hundreds of gigabytes a day of model output - which you can get from their FTP site for free, by the way. So analyse away, make your own ensembles and save the world.

And the polar orbiters FTFA. Yeah, they make nice close up pictures, but the meteorologists rely much more on the geostationary GOES satellites - of which we have 2 active, one spare in parking orbit and one old one acting as a derpy third active sat.

I'm just hoping this postpones the election a few months. I'm liking these gas prices, hoping we can get them down below $2/gal before the next figurehead in chief is appointed elected.

Let's not forget that this is predicted to occur in several years, Congress-Critters have two-year terms.

This is where GOP politicians come in saying "yeah, I'm glad we slashed that funding for NASA. By the way, why do we even need to continue funding the NOAA and volcano research? What a waste of money."
