Well in all fairness, to most of their audience, COPS, is the only home movies they have left after having sold all their belongings for Natty lite, and meth.

I'd like to think that it's a lack of chemistry on the set without Olivia Munn. If you're unfamiliar with her, someone should come along and provide pictorial evidence. That, and she was fun.

FTFA: some are speculating that G4 may be partnering with Esquire magazine in order to make the change more palatable to upscale consumers. There will doubtlessly still be a nerd-friendly side to the network though.

Yea right. Cause when I think of geeks, I think of Esquire and GQ. More than likely it's going to be an E! like channel for dudes. Can't really say I'm surprised though, since the only way I would see any new content on that channel now I would have to piss off an authority figure at a campus or trailer park. Or a very insecure girlfriend who LOVES drama.

I actually did like their coverage of the cons, especially E3. SInce I would probably never get a chance to attend one, it was as close as I could get. G4 used to be a great background noise channel but after the Cops and Cheaters switch I had to start turning it off.

/ now it's SportsCenter and its endless prattling about a backup QB and a ho hum team in a big market.

On the bright side, now that she'll have nothing to do, there's always that chance Sara Jean Underwood will make the leap to starring in bukkake videos.

I don't know why this irritates me, since I haven't watched it in years. Maybe it's because SyFy and BBCAmerica are going the same route by filling their schedules with crap that has nothing to do with the idea behind their existence, and Cartoon Network's not looking too well either. Do any of these network execs understand the concept behind a specialized channel? Because the first thing they do when the budget lags is grab the cheapest, stupidest, least related thing possible and just fill the schedule with that until they've destroyed it entirely. It's as if they weren't charismatic enough for politics so they got the next job with least requirements involved that require basic comprehension of that job.

/Kind of amazed that Comedy Central still appears to understand what it's doing, but they still fill the schedule with the same thing over and over.

Wow.. This is the slowest death of a channel I've ever seen. They've been doing regular format changes and layoffs since 2005.. It's amazing how badly they completely farked up what was once nearly perfect geek programming.

Considering the target demographics of at least SyFy and G4, you're trying to get a group of people that more and more rely on the internet for their entertainment that trying to maintain a cable TV channel gets less and less profitable. You'd think they would try to redirect their energies in to creating a more online presence to follow their demographic, but when you see other networks competing for the Cops/Cheaters demographic, I guess it seems easier and more cost effective to try to squeeze more and more blood from that stone.

This is where Comedy Central shows why it's more savvy than most other channels. Instead of fighting for viewership, it at least maintains some semblance of its original intent and hosts a good deal of content online. Then again, it has a larger pool of successful content to host, but SyFy and G4 might too if they would focus on creating content rather than leasing someone else's.

Have you seen her in The Newsroom?

I was fairly impressed with her acting skills that (seemingly) materialized out of nowhere. She also seems a lot hotter when she's not just there to be eye candy. (Why did they have to hire a chick to be eye candy? They already had Layla Kayleigh...)

In this day and age where we're creeping closer and closer to Idiocracy becoming prophetic, people apparently don't have the attention span for a dedicated channel it seems, so they have to diversify or they'll go under.

Or at least that's what some guy with a his face affixed in a permanent troll face is telling these channel executives, as that's the only thing that explains why Cartoon Network shoved its new seasons of saturday morning DC nation shows to next year after airing one episode, and replaced it all with live action bullshiat.

All the things mentioned in the quoted posts is why I canceled cable TV this summer.. I now stream pre-programmed content specific Justin.TV channels which are by all means programmed 100% better than anything I saw on TV in years.. There is a great military docs channel, a few fantastic crime docs channel.. The list of content goes on.. Combined with netflix.. Yeah.. You mean like Cops, Campus PD, Street Patrol and Cheaters? Because looking through the listings, that's what they have going right now, along with Ninja Warrior, reruns of Heroes, Lost, Iron Man, Voyagers and Knight Rider, and a bunch of movies (specifically, Cobra, Tango & Cash, Assassins, Money Train, Demolition Man and District 9). Attack of the Show and X-Play are the only other programming currently listed, along with all the late-night infomercials.

That's G4 right now. That set of programming.

I've got to hand it to Pereira. That guy was an entertaining host. Quick on his feet for jokes, knowledgeable about the material, and decent in interviews. He had his best chemistry with Munn, but even with the other hosts he could keep it going.

You knew the network was done when he and Sessler left a few months back, not that there was much left at that point anyway. The strangest thing was Sessler was back after he quit for E3 coverage and Pereria was back after he quit for SDCC coverage. Awkward

2012-10-27 11:57:13 AM
Eh, this was actually expected a while ago when g4 announced they were moving away from their old programming style.

It is sad in that it was another niche channel giving into to mediocrity like scifi did when they changed their call sign to syfy. Gone were the midnight anime marathons, gone were the good science fiction shows, and the non schlock movies.

Haven't had either of those channels in my custom guide for years now. History channel is on the bubble, too much false reality and conspiracy theory crap, but they still occasionally put something decent on.

2012-10-27 12:18:53 PM
The FCC or whoever it is that gives broadcast licenses in the U.S. should revoke the stations licenses. History Channel, TLC, Sci Fi, G4, etc. They were allowed over other channels because of what they were supposed to provide. I think winning a tv license because you are going to show a certain theme of programming means you stick with it. If it's a failure, you drop off and someone else can compete to win the slot. You shouldn't be able switch to 24x7 COPS reruns because it's cheaper for you.

Doesn't matter why you watch. All the network sees is that people are watching it and so they feel compelled to shovel more of that crap onto us. Watching for irony's sake doesn't help keep trash out of our televisions.

ZDTV introduced me to Fark. I do miss it. G4 originally was an interesting concept without enough content. Like actual 30 minute documentaries on video game pioneers. Then ZDnet sold ZDtv to Comcast and since those who couldn't tell that the now TechTV and G4 only had a small amount of overlap decided to merge the channels and pretty much destroyed both.

Cable television doesn't work that way. For networks that are not broadcast over the air operators usually pay a fee per subscriber to the channel. G4 is a Comcast owned property but it still has to follow that bookeeping. IIRC Espn receives the largest per sub fee.

This is what happens when the executives who run the channel are not fans of the genre the channel represents.

They slowly turn it into the station THEY wanted to run. In the process, they lose the base viewers, and ratings plummet. Instead of blaming the idiotic programming changes, the execs irrationally think it must be because of the remaining genre programming, and use that as an excuse to further erase any identity the brand had.

TechTV had something that would still be going strong today. The merger brought in idiots who desired to slap down the brand in favor of the lesser G4 channel, then brought in more idiots who didn't have a clue. Bungling that was initiated by an underhanded agenda led to the destruction of the brand.

...and so it goes. G4 becomes GQ and gets to compete with Bravo for the metrosexual crowd (that hasn't been a thing for ages anywhere in the country except where the execs live). Good luck with that, asshats.

Why don't Farkers band together and create a range of genre channels with the charter of STICKING WITH THE GENRE? I have to think the average Farker has more brain cells in their boogers than the average cable TV executive has in their entire head. Create Fark Geek, Fark Music and Fark Sci-Fantasy channels to start.

Who's with me?

Pereira, Munn, Sessler, Webb, Gore, Hardwick, Haislip, Butler, all talented, smart, funny people doing a lot of live television week in, week out.

Pereira's got a show coming up on Syfy, Munn is showing up on The New Girl, Hardwick is back with Talking Dead.
Saw Haislip on American Ninja Warrior. She did not look happy.

Is Ninja Warrior going to be shown anywhere?

Sessler did stuff for Spike during E3
Kevin is a game show host which is understandable since you knew it was bound to happen.
Munn is in The Newsroom
Webb I get a feeling she'll do some online stuff or join Spike's Legion of Doom with Geoff
Haislip seems good for something better than hosting.

What was the show where they took game footage from mmorpg's and made humorous skits? I think it was on techtv or zdtv. That show made me laugh once in a while. Or did I just dream it?

Then they might as well rebrand them. TLC can become the "Freak Lifestyles Network"; A&E can become the "War on Mundane things (and Storage Lockers) Network (which occasionally airs good scripted content...if you're lucky)", History becomes the "Turn Junk into Gold Channel"; SyFy becomes the "Conspiracy Channel"; and USA becomes the "Hey, We Actually Put Scripted Stuff On Our Channel Channel."

/They would've won that one in a bidding war with TNT.

At least here in Mexico, TLC has actually been rebranded to "The Travel and Life Channel". (I've seen some of it in the place where I eat, they have it as background noise).

I've just been watching some AOTS and X-Play segments on the web from time to time these days. That's probably the format in which they should live on. As a 24/7 station, G4 is useless. Hell, have them join The Nerdist and/or Geek & Sundry channels on YouTube, FFS! Most of the G4 hosts have already appeared on both anyway.

Candace was pretty enough but wasn't funny wasn't geeky and had a bit of a stick up her butt. Say what you will about Munn, she was down for the hot sauce challenge. They should have replaced her with Haslip or even Blair Buttler.

I remember one incredibly uncomfortable exchange when Anna David was trying to impart some truly great and honest sex advice and Munn started running her mouth, going for the low-blow joke instead. Anna actually said, "I'm trying to give some advice on a genuinely tough problem that a lot of men go through. Would you shut the fark up and let me finish?" About a month later she stopped showing up on the In Your Pants segments and they switched to that stupid mannequin. Anna was a guest on a podcast (I think it was The 404) not too long after that and they mentioned In Your Pants segment among her credits, but she stopped the host and said that she had quit doing those because Munn would never stop talking over her and always undermined Anna's attempts to answer legitimate problems seriously and with dignity so she could get a cheap laugh or do something that would "get her mentioned in the blogs the next day."

It was only a matter of time after Sessler left. Him and ...well at least initially, Webb were the only two seemingly genuine gamers/techies. Webb has sort of bought her own hype a this point, though. Their coverage of E3 has sucked balls the last couple years as well, which was the only reason I even tuned in anymore.

Isn't this what happens with every niche channel ever made? They start out catering to a small demographic, whether it's history, learning, geek, etc.. Then it takes off and the business types have to figure out how to make more money because shareholders need growth so they start researching and finding out what sells advertising spots, and then the channel turns into what we have now like TLC reality crap and History Channel's ancient aliens.

2012-10-27 11:42:55 PM
I haven't really watched TV in over a year now, maybe two. Every channel I loved to watch was turned into a bland shadow of itself, replaying the same shows over and over again. Network Decay has set in so badly it's become the norm rather than the exception. There's simply nothing on I want to watch.

I was never a huge fan of Webb, I mean at least she knew what the fark she was talking about. One review was super memorable to me at least for the review because the game was crap IIRC it was a stupid Naruto fighting game and Webb dropped an F-bomb about having to review another stupid farking Naruto game and for whatever reason it didn't get beeped and well whatever it's cable I backed my Tivo up though a couple of times to make sure I heard correctly though.

Sounds like it's just being rebranded.

Usually what happens is whoever has bought the network will come in and take a look at all of their assets. In this day and age if their gear is up to date then one of two things will happen:

1. Come in, grab all the gear and redistribute to your other networks.
2. Fire everyone, rename the channel and restaff.

A lot of times they'll just have everyone reapply for their old jobs. I've been through both scenarios...

...and nothing of value was lost.

Over the last couple years, those shows have become little more than infomercials for whatever game/console was coming out. Not to say there are rigorous standards for "gaming journalism", but feigning frothed excitement over the Wii-U isn't merely sad, its still not going to make anyone want to buy a Wii-U.

2012-10-28 07:03:09 PM

Codenamechaz: Shadowtag: I don't know why this irritates me, since I haven't watched it in years.

Yup. Easier to blame the audience than to change your business model, and nobody gets promoted for saying "We need to focus on quality and our demographic, making the most out of our audience, instead of grabbing for every the LCD." What's particularly galling about CN is how successful midweek shows like Adventure Time, Regular Show, and Gumball have been when not kicked to the curb at the first opportunity.
