bonefish: 4 million people gave up looking for work... How many of the were *gasp* unemployable?

How many couldn't get a job because the employer won't do on the job training?

shower_in_my_socks: The budget for CPB is 0.06% the size of our Defense Budget. That you would even mention it, after casually dismissing other remedies that would take trillions off of our national debt, discredits and embarrasses your entire argument.

Understood. But I'm not contributing to the political party who are upset about the ad tactic of "Our opponent hates Big Bird," isn't available/didn't work.

shower_in_my_socks: The Republican long-game for decades has been to blow-up our our national debt, and then use debt-reduction as an excuse to cut programs they don't like. Fark them and anyone else who goes along with it. And fark anyone who suggests more tax cuts, much less any extension of the deficit-ballooning "Bush Tax Cuts," which completely FAILED to create jobs, which was the farking lie they were sold to us on in the first place.

Because Jack Murtha was a big time Republican, right? Same goes for Robert Byrd in the Senate. My state isn't worried about losing Defense dollars to Florida, because Bill Nelson's basically been in Congress for the past 30 years....

The "Bush Tax Cuts" should have been allowed to expire as scheduled in 2005. The problem is that some decidedly "middle class" families will get hit with the AMT, since all those fixes are rolled in with the rate extensions.

Again, whether or not you agree with Rep Ryan's approach, at least it's a serious, comprehensive one. So, too, was Senator Wyden's other attempt, with Senator Gregg. Both are too unpalatable for rank-and-file Congressmen dedicated to bring home the bacon for their home districts.

And the White House? A) Don't cut anything other than defense, and B) Tax the fark out of the rich, even if it means passing a second AMT to do it. Just call it the "Buffet Rule," and it'll work better the second time it's tried. Oh, and tax credits to buy tankless water heaters.

My own Representative, for whom I plan to vote in November, understands these things. He's a Democrat. He bumps heads with his party leadership on it. Even Bill Clinton gets it. But Clinton shuts up when the White House handlers tell him he's off-message.

Raise taxes on everybody. Find a way to fix Social Security (I kind of like a system based on years worked instead of based on an age; my twenty-something wife's high school classmates in grad school for third MAs haven't worked a day in their lives. I had my first tax-paying job at sixteen) . Replace Medicare, and the farce that is the ACA, with a single-payer insurance system.

I just don't get how it's possibly to endorse Romney (vs. endorsing nobody). What does he stand for? Is he a social conservative? A hawk? A northern moderate? A bean counter? I just have no farking clue, and neither does the Sun-Sentinel or anyone else, because he has held every single conceivable Republican policy position and half of the Democratic ones since he started campaigning for President in 2008. It's not that he subtly moved to more nuanced moderate positions for the general election. It's that he'll be for healthcare reform when he's talking to the press in the morning about his compassion, against healthcare reform 30 minutes later when he's on the stage at a rally to his base, and for everything in the healthcare bill (except the part where it's paid for) two hours later in Florida.

He's Schroedinger's Candidate - he's a Rockefeller Republican and a Tea Partier and a Christian Coalitionist and the white SuperObama all at once, unless and until he wins the election. How can you possibly *endorse* anything about a person that stands for nothing? NOTHING.

I really wonder how much weight a newspaper endorsement carries, anymore - if they ever did much.

Curious: The greatest threat to our national defense is not the size of our military, but the ever-escalating size of our national debt. We must get government spending under control, across the board.

this about the guy who brags on increasing defense spending. that is just one of several schizophrenic things they wrote. there were times it looked like they just threw a dart at a chart of talking points then wrote about the one it landed on.

What amazes me is the right acts as if the defense budget and multiple wars abroad, all while handing out tax cuts like candy, isn't the primary driver of the national debt and has been for the last thirty years -- especially the last ten.

SuperT: is china gonna start a war which they would lose in about ten farking seconds over 8% of the total tbills? is japan? Are pensioners and other people with investments in government bonds going to rough up Treasury department personnel on the way home?

Now what do you suppose would happen if China took that 8% and shortsold it all on the global market?

Lemme see if I can boil this screed down to its essentials...
