You'd be surprised what canids can breed with. Somebody cross bred Hyenas with dogs, in order to produce a species of dog with even more sensitive smell capabilities.

I was in the Ethiopian Highlands in 2011 and while I dearly wanted to go looking for these wolves, the altitude killed me. I was huffing and puffing up the slopes while donkeys and 80-year-old Ethiopian women sauntered past me.

Yeah, I understand it, and I've been there. Unless a farking Hyena or African Hunting Dog evolves to fill the niche, there's nothing coming any time soon. They're the only large predator left up there. Lower down you have Geladas, but they're generalists, omnivores and in no way a replacement for a large predator.

Actually, dogs and wolves are the same genus and species, canis lupus. Dogs have recently been redesignated as the subspecies C. lupus familiaris.

Probably what's going to happen with these animals is the same thing that happened with the Florida panther a few years back: After numerous attempts to save the subspecies, researchers had to give up and save the ecosystem predator instead and bring in the related Felis concolor to strengthen the gene pool, losing the subspecies. The same thing will likely happen here: They'll have to bring in the nearest related subspecies and lose the unique Ethiopian wolf to preserve the local predator. Or else allow it to become extinct in favor of whatever other local canid is dominant.

It happens.

Are you sure it was a hyena and not an African Wild Dog? Hyenas are about as closely related to dogs as tigers are.

What's the problem? Just call the EPA and have them handle it. They can introduce Canadian grey timberwolves. Now I know what you're thinking, that would be introducing an invasive species which is an apex predator and quite a bit larger than the wolf native to the area and thus going to eat itself out of house and home.

None of that stopped the introduction of the Canadian grey timberwolf into Yellowstone.

So yeah, toss some coyotes in while you're at it.

The color variation in coyotes is amazin. Have lived in PA, CO, OK, FL, AL, IA, NE, OR, and hunted in many other states, and seen from pale grey to almost black, and every color between. Wonderful thing, adaptation

They had their chance here and, unless adaptation skills and some genetic luck prevail, enjoyed their stay with +99% of every other member of this ongoing party that left when the food and atmosphere wasn't to their liking. Sounds like most parties I've attended when the mood changed, just on a macroscopic scale.
