Without Fail: Fark_Guy_Rob: Can someone explain this to me.....am I supposed to be racist and sexist - or not?

It's like there is some ridiculous double standard where I'm not allowed to say, 'Ugh - I don't want a black chick on my chess team because black chicks are no good at chess' but I am allowed to say 'Wow - this black chick is great at chess and that's really amazing because she's BLACK and a GIRL! Lord knows black people aren't much for thinking and a girl?! A Girl who can play chess! AMAZING!!!'

Negative racism and sexism is wrong.
But positive racism and sexism is heartwarming?

The problem with those that say they are 'ignoring race' is that they don't.

Want proof?

YOU POSTED IN THIS THREAD.

And YOU focused on race. The article doesn't.

I never said I ignore race. I said I was raised to believe race doesn't impact one's ability in a meaningful way. That all races are equal.
And I do believe that.

It's moronic to ignore reality. There *are* different 'races', even it it's hard to meaningful define them. People with different skin color are visibly different because of it.

Writing articles that emphasize one skin's color when discussing an achievement does imply that the achievement is greater because of the skin color. Same with this girl's gender. It's common to mention someone's gender and it's common to use 'his/her, he/she' in English, but pointing out that she's a girl who is playing in a MALE DOMINATED sport really seems to suggest that not being male implies a disadvantage. That somehow it's harder for a girl to think about chess in a room that isn't filled with other girls.

I think the article is very insulting to women and blacks.

There are something like 1300 Grand masters of chess. You'd think that would be enough of an accomplishment - but if you compare and contrast the different articles you can Google on any of them, you'll find that the articles on Female chess grand masters emphasize that they are female and how the world of chess is dominated by men and how they had to struggle against adversity....if you Google any of the three black Grand Masters of chess, you'll find articles that emphasize how they are black and how blacks are underrepresented and how they had to struggle against adversity.

Everyone else, that isn't black or female? We'll you can just read a quick blurb about how they grew up and how awesome they are at chess.

Hell - the FIDE who is in charge of 'Grandmaster' titles even has special titles just for women.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIDE_titles

ANYONE of any gender can be a Chess Grandmaster - but only women can become a Woman's Grandmaster.

That's right - they have another special ranking system for women!

So, stop and think for a second....

If men and women are equal why is there a special group for women only? There is no group exclusively for men, but there is a special group for women *and* a general group for both sexes.
Women are allowed to compete in both groups.
Men are not.

It can't be both ways. Either men and women are equals and can both play chess or women are inferior and should play in their own chess leagues. I was raised to believe in gender equality....so I think we should drop special titles for women and let anyone who wants to play chess, play chess.

There's a lot of feminists that constantly whine about how women's sport isn't taken seriously, yet by "women's sport" as a separate classification denotes inferiority.

He was sexist too. He talked a lot of shiat about female chess players, and his chess skills couldn't cash the check his mouth wrote.

I'd let her black queen take my white king.

Meh, Im still better than her.

When she can beat ME at 17 then ill be impressed.

Or Grandmaster Flash.

Can someone explain how chess came to be classified as a "sport"?

To borrow a phrase from the late, lamented Sports Night: "I think at the very least they have to be moving."

I mean, you could have keyed on the fact that she's a woman, or only 17. But it's the "she's black" part that sticks out for ya, huh?

How was that post racist? Oh... it wasn't.

See, every time someone mentions race or anything that anyone could concievably twist into being race related, its becomes a racist statement automatically. But only in the eyes of white racists who are racist against white people.

These people have been raised to look for it and see it everywhere.

/ There are no more prolific racists than the guilt ridden white racist who hates white people.
// do I get a racist tag too? go ahead, prove my point.

Well since you didn't say anything racist really, no I won't apply that tag to you just yet. Dumbass is another story however.

Also, this made me laugh out loud, so well done.

Enraged? No, but I can kinda see dudes point. What does race have to do with her achievement? Absolutely nothing, so why mention it, how was it in any way important to know she's black? Personally there's really very few times race or ethnic background needs to be brought up into anything. Discussing heritage or something like that, sure bring it up, Achievement? What's the point? How is race or ethnic background relevant to the achievement? Now I can see bringing up her age because as far as I know there aren't that many chess players ranked that high at that age due to experience playing and whatnot, but again, race isn't even a factor, or at least it shouldn't be.

TimeCubeFan: Logic and reason are not discriminatory. Since when was it surprising a non-caucasian would be good at it? We 'Murkins and them darnd Rushns didn't invent dat dar game. Hell, we owe Chess and most of science to folks with darker skin. Can we finally destroy the stereotype now? Reality isn't trumpets and emotional string sections whenever Hollywood churns another "HOW DO I REECHZ THEEZ KIDZ" rise from poverty films. Sometimes the better player is slightly different from the norm. Slightly and insignificantly. Brains are all gray, and icky.

Considering the game is Persian in origin, yeah.

Here you will find a list of the world's youngest female grandmasters. Three of them are younger than this girl. I'm not gonna disagree with you about the racism, but in this case the fact that she's black actually is the germane part.

I see the point now. It's like, if a white guy won a contest where you had to tap dance while eating watermelon...

mrlewish: I'd let her black queen take my white king.

More of a white rook, really. Possibly a pawn if it's cold.

And honestly, I was curious about the 'race and sex does thing!' thing as well.

When do we stop grouping race/sex differently if they're 'equal'? Women compete in womens only leagues, but men aren't allowed to hold a 'male only' league in most things.

When was the last time a news article was 'White male does thing and it's awesome because he's white and male'?

And why is it impossible to ask simple questions like this and have a reasonable, rational, discussion, instead of someone just shiatting out racism cards and plastering them on people? Oh, you said something that wasn't 'all hail praise person YOU MUST BE A RACIST HOW IS STORMFRONT ASSHOLE NAZI?' It gets tiresome.

There should be a way to explore race relations in america without people immediately going to the 'you're white and talking about race stuff so you're a racist get the fark out racist jew-hater' thing you guys are doing. Because what you're doing is simply pushing under legititmate conversation and topic exploration, asked with an open mind. And getting shut down that way is a quick and simple way to fester closet racism and resentments.
