The 17 year old from Brooklyn is just a few wins away from becoming the first female African-American to attain the ranking of chess master.

She plays chess. I mean, it's a pretty obscure game, you probably haven't heard of it.

So is she special because she's black, female or just freaking awesome at chess?

East Flatbush is not hipster, more like a slice of the Caribbean without the sunshine, clear water, or umbrella filled drinks.

what were you doing in middle school?

Kanemano: what were you doing in middle school?

I played chess for a while in high school - competitions and the whole nine yards. Gave it up because I didn't enjoy memorizing openings. I started playing because the high school coach came to the middle school and played a room of 40 kids who were interested at the same time. I was the second to last one still standing.

Actually went to nationals one year. Went 3-4-1 I think.

When I was 17 I was black, male and freaking awesome at smoking copious amounts of weed and barely managing to graduate from high school.

So, yes.

My family moved to the sates when I was 9 to East Flatbush actually, loved the game but I was never in the chess club, I used to love going to the village chess shop in Greenwich village Chess in New York is serous business, if you ever want to feel humbled sit down with some of the Chess hustlers in Washington Square park and see how fast you can lose, but it does teach you how to play with a clock.

her rating is 2058 and chess master is 2200.

She would have to beat 8 masters without a loss to break 2200.

If she ever becomes a chess master, she would be considered a "role model for African-American women" and would then have every African-American "community leader" want to include her in their entourage whenever they made public appearances anywhere. (*sigh*)

Personally, I wish her the best of luck, and I hope she kicks some chess ass. On the other hand, if she does it, it will be an individual achievement. I don't like how the press is playing this up as some kind of freak of nature on the one hand, but then talks about her like she's fighting through all this chess-related oppression that's out there. Like the evil white male chess masters were holding her and "her people" back. No they weren't. They never were.

Logic and reason are not discriminatory. Since when was it surprising a non-caucasian would be good at it? We 'Murkins and them darnd Rushns didn't invent dat dar game. Hell, we owe Chess and most of science to folks with darker skin. Can we finally destroy the stereotype now? Reality isn't trumpets and emotional string sections whenever Hollywood churns another "HOW DO I REECHZ THEEZ KIDZ" rise from poverty films. Sometimes the better player is slightly different from the norm. Slightly and insignificantly. Brains are all gray, and icky.

I know racism in this country is gone once stupid liberals stop being impressed whenever a non-white person does things that white folk have been doing for a long time. Becoming president, being good at chess etc. . . .

TFA was very good but confusing. they states she is from Brooklyn but fail to mention when she moved here from Africa. just totally skipped it.

had a dentist who was born and raised in Prague but he was just proud to be a citizen of the USA and left it at that.

Logic and reason may not be, but regardless of economic class inner-city schools aren't noted for churning out chess masters or latin scholars. And beyond that, it's only been a handful of generations since this would have been at best exactly the kind of freakshow story you seem to think it is. There are people still alive who can remember a time when even having the opportunity to try probably would have been impossible for her. We're all *very* proud of all of you who came in here to let us know that you're so ethically and morally advanced that you can't even SEE color, but it's still a notable first and worthy of accolade and remembrance.

See, every time someone mentions race or anything that anyone could concievably twist into being race related, its becomes a racist statement automatically. But only in the eyes of white racists who are racist against white people.

These people have been raised to look for it and see it everywhere.

/ There are no more prolific racists than the guilt ridden white racist who hates white people.
// do I get a racist tag too? go ahead, prove my point.

master category here - it isn't that hard

all I did was memorize MCO-11 and 101 opening traps

I used to do exhibitions where I would play simultaneous blind (I never saw the board, the opponents had shrouded boards and they would call out the position of the move on their turn when I got to them), and at one point I played 20 simultaneous semi-blind games this way. I was 18-1-1 that day, with the only loss coming on an illegal move where I jumped a bishop over my own pawn on move 38 (one bad move in a total of nearly 800 moves). The tie came against a decent player who went french defense exchange as white and was clearly playing for the draw the whole way, so we drew by agreement at move 50 because I had a plane to catch. I had space advantage and positional advantage with material equality, so I don't think he would get the draw, but with the DQ earlier, what did I care?

Can someone explain this to me.....am I supposed to be racist and sexist - or not?

It's like there is some ridiculous double standard where I'm not allowed to say, 'Ugh - I don't want a black chick on my chess team because black chicks are no good at chess' but I am allowed to say 'Wow - this black chick is great at chess and that's really amazing because she's BLACK and a GIRL! Lord knows black people aren't much for thinking and a girl?! A Girl who can play chess! AMAZING!!!'

Negative racism and sexism is wrong.
But positive racism and sexism is heartwarming?

Here's an article about a boy who became a chess master at the age of 9. No mention of skin color - so I'm guessing he's got to White? Maybe Asian. But certainly not Black or Hispanic.

The problem with those that say they are 'ignoring race' is that they don't.

Want proof?

YOU POSTED IN THIS THREAD.
