Gee, conservatives with faulty memories. No idea how that could happen.

Who the f*ck is Lena Dunham and why am I supposed to be outraged or not outraged?

I tell you, there is just something about Lena Dunham. I want to not like her, but I would do disappointingly dirty things to her.

I keep thinking of either Olivia Dunham on Fringe or Lena Heady on Terminator, Game of Thrones, or the criminally underrated Dredd.

GAT_00: Who the f*ck is Lena Dunham and why am I supposed to be outraged or not outraged?

She is an actress, director and writer, whose most prominent success is HBO's "Girls." She is usually described as being part of the indie "mumblecore" subgenre. Very clever, intelligent people whose tastes do not happen align with her work like to quite sophisticatedly describe her as fat, ugly and/or porcine.

And they're soft on God.

Meaning they think that conception was God's will, but you know, the direct cause of the conception was kind of out of His hands. Not his deal, not his bag.

Oh that thing. I watched a couple of episodes and I couldn't decide if it was the worst thing I'd ever seen or the most realistic TV show I'd ever seen.

Oh for farks sake.

at first i thought lena dunham was not good at running a tv show because girls is thuroughly unlikable. then i realised it was supposed to be unlikable, and therefore she was doing a good job. I am still unclear, however, on how/why there is an audience for an extremely unlikable show.

You should be outraged because her show on HBO sucks.

I like it, which surprised me, and it's not just because I want to do unholy things to David Mamet's daughter.

The guy I work with has one of those talk radio airheads biatching about this voting is like sex ad. Could someone please find a video of Reagan saying what the article states? I'd really like to just blast this out of my speakers when he cuts to commercial.

2012-10-26 03:18:22 PM
That's because back then, Republicans were only using tip. Now they just jam the whole thing in there.

So He helpfully stepped up AFTER the rape to ensure the victim would have a lifelong reminder of that rape. Hey, the child might even LOOK LIKE the rapist!

And...now we know why the Gipper was called the Great Communicator, and Lena Dunham plays the self-absorbed lead on a cable comedy show watched by less than 1/3 of 1% of the American population. It's called innuendo, and when it's done right, it's genius. When it's not, it's juvenile and cringe-inducing.

Oh, she's the one who made that show about the obnoxious, bourgeoisie, trust fund, suburban white kids living the "bohemian" artist lifestyle on their parents' dime in gentrified, boring Brooklyn?

I can't think of many things that would stop me from voting for Obama at this point, but an endorsement from Lena Dunham comes pretty f*cking close.

what precisely do you like about it? my objection to it is that, while it may be realistic to potray the characters and their personalities as the show does, they are deeply unlikable characters. without some character to "root for" if you will, i can't maintain any interest in the show.

I guess I just don't feel the need to like or root for any of them. There are plenty of other enjoyable shows with unlikable characters: Sunny, The League, and I'm sure others that would come to mind if I really thought on it. I like her writing and dialogue, I like that they're all f*cked up and that there aren't a lot of tropes and cliches thrown in.

Yeah, a show about rich, young, aimless New Yorkers? Who'd have thought something that off-the-wall would ever get greenlit?

What's next? A show about lawyers or cops?

2012-10-26 03:44:06 PM
Sounds like Reagan is talking anal. Which is also a lot like electing Republicans.

i guess i feel differently about sunny or the league because they seem to be less grounded in reality. the actors in those shows all play broad characters who do ridiculous and over the top things. girls, it seems like the characters are supposed to be more grounded in reality. in sunny, or the league, the routinely get into situations and do things that would get them killed/arrested/divorced but the style of the show handwaves it all away. in girls, it seems like they are supposed to be in the real world, so when the character steals tip money from the help, that seems far more despicable than say dennis's reason for buying a boat.

That's like saying that The Chicago Code, The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, and The Mob Doctor are all the same because they're about organized crime.

Jasper Carrot did it the in the UK for the 1979 elections. I don't remember the British conservatives being outraged then, although I was only 8 years old at the time.

Just now had time to RTA.. obviously the problem with the ad was that she didn't compare it to rape. It would have been okay then. Consensual sex, not so much

I don't see what's so amusing about any of this.

Republican is by and large a selfish sociopathic ideology, you kind of have to be an asshole to "quip" about the joys of supporting it.

rufus-t-firefly: God works in mysterious dickish ways.

Exactly.

People love to talk about whether or not God exists. And I guess that's only fair and natural.

But very few people talk about whether God is worthy of worship (given He exists). And that's the more interesting question in my mind.
