She is an actress, director and writer, whose most prominent success is HBO's "Girls." She is usually described as being part of the indie "mumblecore" subgenre. at first i thought lena dunham was not good at running a tv show because girls is thuroughly unlikable. then i realised it was supposed to be unlikable, and therefore she was doing a good job. I am still unclear, however, on how/why there is an audience for an extremely unlikable show.

It's called innuendo, and when it's done right, it's genius. When it's not, it's juvenile and cringe-inducing.

what precisely do you like about it? my objection to it is that, while it may be realistic to potray the characters and their personalities as the show does, they are deeply unlikable characters. without some character to "root for" if you will, i can't maintain any interest in the show.

There are plenty of other enjoyable shows with unlikable characters: Sunny, The League, and I'm sure others that would come to mind if I really thought on it. I like her writing and dialogue, I like that they're all f*cked up and that there aren't a lot of tropes and cliches thrown in.

i guess i feel differently about sunny or the league because they seem to be less grounded in reality. the actors in those shows all play broad characters who do ridiculous and over the top things. girls, it seems like the characters are supposed to be more grounded in reality. in sunny, or the league, the routinely get into situations and do things that would get them killed/arrested/divorced but the style of the show handwaves it all away. in girls, it seems like they are supposed to be in the real world, so when the character steals tip money from the help, that seems far more despicable than say dennis's reason for buying a boat.

Jasper Carrot did it the in the UK for the 1979 elections. I don't remember the British conservatives being outraged then, although I was only 8 years old at the time.
