Ready-set: RexTalionis: Other reasons why it didn't suck:

Is that Bridgette Wilson? That woman is dripping sexy. Such a sassy, bratty face. She might be proof that God exists...

Except she married a Sasquatch

I disagree that you can't make a movie from a videogame, it has to be the RIGHT game - and there a few out there which are setup in a similar format to movies.

I'd love to see an Assassin's Creed series...except Hollywood would probably kill it with excessive and terrible quality CGI.

The bar is set pretty low when 34% on RT counts as "good".

Nadie_AZ: jagermech: Johnny Cage vs. Scorpion. I love watching that fight.

Ah, I had forgotten that one. Yes, I agree.

Yea I loved that fight, hell I still do. It had everything, even a fatality! I mean, not in the true traditional sense, but Scorpion's "Toasty!" is one of the main signatures of the entire franchise and I loved when they put it in.

TV's Vinnie: Answer: Because they had Bruce Lee's "Enter the Dragon" to rip off.

Movies ripping off movies is nothing new

just off the top of my head

Star Trek 2 Wrath of Khan is Moby Dick in space told from the perspective of the Whale

Avatar is Dances with Wolves in space with blue cat people as the Native Americans

Last Man Standing is Fistful of Dollars in prohibition instead of the old west

Gran Torino is the Shootist in Detroit instead of the old west.

Firefly/Serenity is The Outlaw Josey Whales in space

... I can't believe people are defending Mortal Kombat as a good movie. And I like some generally 'considered-crappy' movies.

7th Son of a 7th Son: I really hope they greenlight another movie based on the recent web series.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I hated the web series. It stripped out the chop-socky action and the Eastern spiritualism that define Mortal Kombat almost as much as the blood and gore do.

Here's the thing you need to understand about Mortal Kombat: It's not a good movie. It doesn't need to be. It is what it is, and all that it should be -- a Hong Kong kung fu flick with a Hollywood budget.

Great, now I'm going to have that damn theme song stuck in my head for hours.

Hagbardr: Double Dragon?

My parents can always thank that movie for my brothers and I constantly doing the "What's up, chicken butt?" banter.

Graphically, that movie was beautiful. Story wise especially in a FF context, it was horrible. Pretty much par for the course for the newer FF games.

Besides the movie, I was able to see "Mortal Kombat Live" back in the 90's.
I can't remember the specifics, but it was a stage show with martial arts and some special effects.
It was quite awesome, but sadly not very violent.

Gergesa: I vaguely recall a Super Mario brothers porn parody starring Ron Jeremy and TT boy. I am fairly certain that it was better than the one released in actual theatres. I can't remember the name of it.

Super Hornio Brothers
I watched it ages ago and I don't really remember anything about it except that the Bowser character was really disturbing.

I've never played any of the Final Fantasy games, and know basically nothing about them, but I really liked this movie. It was actually the first thing that came to mind when I saw the headline.

/Mortal Kombat was crap

"This is the part where you fall."

I should bump this one back to the top of my Netflix queue too. Its been too long.

I liked the soundtrack for the sequel more than the first one, though the movie was blah.

I've played quite a few games in the FF series and I'll say this: That movie is very, very, loosely related to the franchise.
"Last order" and "Advent Children" (Movie prequel and epilogue to the events of FFVII) would more fit the bill and are watchable, by anime standards.

I think Hollywood can do Video game movies if it tried. But the first step means getting a quality screenplay before rushing off to cash in on the product.

/Been watching the "Forward unto dawn" shorts based on Halo.
/Those are actually pretty good.

Awesome fight with one of the best metal songs in existence ("Zero Signal" by Fear Factory) playing in the background. If you don't like this whole sequence, you lack 1) taste, b) a soul, 4) the right to comment about anything, ever.

I will say one thing about the second Mortal Kombat movie: It had a better-looking Sonya. Not a better Sonya, but a better-looking one.

You are history's greatest monster.

2012-10-28 06:23:03 AM
The main reason the 2nd MK movie sucked is that they tried to cram too many characters just for the sake of being there. Like Sheeva, for example. The poor girl has 4 arms and super-strength, and gets taken out by having a cage dropped on her. WTF? Or with Nightwolf: "You need to learn your Animality. Go on these 3 quests, of which we'll only show the first 2. Later!"

Plus none of the cast members in the first film (save two), came back for the second. They dodged that bullet.

Finally, the special effects sucked homeless goats. They "cheesy 80's Z-movie" bad.

Jesus, that was 90 minutes of my life i'll never get back. Yes, it looked pretty, but the story was the usual "we have save the Earth from aliens!" story and it had ZERO to do with Final Fantasy. No crystals, Chocobos, magic, airships...nada. IIRC, it nearly bankrupted Square. It was a harbinger of Square's mishandling of the series.

2012-10-28 02:26:15 PM
Big Trouble In Little China was a better Mortal Kombat movie than Mortal Kombat, in my opinion.

I was excited to learn of this legendary not sucky video game movie. Mortal Kombat? Fer reals? This movie is really terrible. MK at PG-13? Fail from the start.
