I'm really excited about this (saw the preview during Hotel Transylvania). If anything it'll bring back a lot of memories of old games.

Also excited about Rise of the Guardians. That looks badass.

I hope they only use 7 colors (and black) at any time during the 8-bit sequences. That'll be thoroughly classic.

/or is it 6?

I'm super excited about it even though I know it was written specifically to cash in on my nostalgia and I don't care.

What's rise of the guardians?

Normally I protect myself with a thick layer of fat, poor hygiene, and cynicism. But I'm holding out this movie will be good.

I want to be all Old Man Cranky Pants over the headline, but I think about the kids from Back To The Future, "He's using his hands! That's a baby game!" Someday some little kid's gonna talk smack about whatever machine-gun kill orgy he's all about, because of how klunky it works.

The first time I saw the trailer, It opened with the "Bad Guys Anonymous."

I turned to my wife and said "Is that Zhangeif, M. Bison, and Bowswer in a Self-Help Meeting about being evil? I'm sold. They can turn this trailer off."

I know it'shiatting all the buttons, and I just don't care.

The Fix It Felix, Jr game they made for this isn't half bad. Pretty easy at first but as you get up a couple levels it starts to get a little madcap. Great homage to the games of the time where if you had a quarter and an ounce of skill you could actually play a game for longer than 60 seconds.

I wouldn't mind versions of all three games on the website for my DSi on cart or download. Hero's Duty is easy enough to get into, good to play as a quick pick up. The tracks on Sugar Rush are actually good driving once you find the right car to use.

Here's the trailer: Link

It's about an ancient evil (fear) that threatens to take over the world (the usual stuff), except the good guys are "The Guardians", the mythical children's characters like Santa Clause (who has fully tattooed arms and played by Alec Baldwin), Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, Mr. Sandman, etc. who band together to fight it.

Yeah, I was the same way. And then I watched the second trailer and realized that the homage is most likely going to be left behind Ralph as he jumps around. And the Sarah Silverman girl is a major character, which is a turn-off to me.

It's about a 30 year old hitting a mid-life crisis and wanting to go out and try something new. I can totally relate.

Also, the villain support group in the previews makes me chuckle.

I have a friend who's a "South Park" animator. They have the same problem: Their rendering software always tries to make their animation look better than it's supposed to. It's a constant wrestling match, I'm told. Or at least, that was the case a few years ago when he told me this story.

I would be really interested in hearing about that, actually.  Even before the rendering software... how difficult is it to keep everything in the same style (a style that goes against most designers sensabilities: to always be doing the latest and greatest.)

I'm guessing: bring the kids for the funny video game graphics and appealing characters and whiz-bang stuff (and because it's Disney), enjoy it yourself for the 80's memories.

My nine year old daughter saw the trailer with me and was laughing at the group therapy scene because she recognized several of the villains. Some of them are still around in Nintendo Wii or DS games.

I'll probably take the kids to see it next weekend. In a strange way, it feels like this generations Roger Rabbit.

They have the Malboro King in there, I'm guessing he's the Final Fantasy villain rep.

I have no idea who the blue elf girl is, but since all the characters besides Ralph are actual characters she's gotta be from something. The purple rhino is Neff, he's from Altered Beast.

Early IBM PCs were pretty bad.. seemed like they didn't want it to compete with their big iron mainframes, so they went with cheap I/O, graphics, sounds.

My first DOS machine(3rd computer) had Hercules Monochrome graphics on an amber monitor. Higher resolution than CGA or EGA, with 2 shades of amber, so it looked pretty good..though not all software supported it. I later found a CGA emulator for crappy old games that were CGA only.

Arcade games circa 1982 had graphics very similar to Wreck-It Ralph. Think Mappy or Kangaroo.

1986/7? Arcade games were even more sophisticated looking.

I was thinking arcades. I was thinking the Disney game (based on the Ralph sprite) looked a bit more sophisticated than something from 1982, but I guess I was wrong.

Please stop using mega celebrities as VAs.

If I'm watching a movie about Wreck-It Ralph I dont want to image John C Rileys face in my mind every time he speaks. Same with all the others.

Takes away ALL of the immersion

Will Ferrell did a great job in Curious George. And I can't stand that talentless hack.

There are exceptions and some celebrities do a good job. But there's also a horde of actual voice actors who make a career on this sort of thing, and are generally pretty great at it.

Would have been perfect.

Peter Gabriel circa 1983 in full face paint?

Gotta support the team.

Pick Axe Pete. The height of Odyssey2 gaming until KC Munchkin came along.

Although Quest for the Rings was pretty nifty, too.

Disney doesn't know what 1982 games looked like. They certainly weren't as nice as Fix It Felix.

What are you talking about? As I pointed out earlier, arcade games certainly did. I probably dropped a couple of hundred dollars in quarters in 1982.

1982.

You think Fix-It Felix, Jr. looks more sophisticated?

No, you're right that the game looks (and plays) like something out of 1982. My own complaints are rather nitpicky in comparison, but considering that TFA is all about how hard they worked to create authentic 8-bit graphics, I think I'm entitled to pick nits. It just feels like these guys understand the aesthetic of classic arcade games, but not the technical limitations that led to that aesthetic. (And that's fine; they're animators, not programmers or electrical engineers. After the wrap party for Wreck-It Ralph, they won't have to think about this stuff ever again.)

Anything put out on MCR harware by Midway was ~just~ as nice as Fix-it Felix...if not nicer. Matter of fact, the only thing I could possibly nitpick on their efforts is that the stuff plays more like Midway MCR hardware than Nintendo.

//Superb job to every last person involved in this campaign.
