I just hope you guys can get that car to DC before January 21st to get the photo.

Good morning, Farkers!

$14,756
Let's start this off the right way....

A note from Unfreakable:

I don't really look at this as a Democrat thing or a Republican thing or a political thing, I consider this an Internet thing. The same as when Fark helped send a crowbar and a Half-Life strategy manual to the scientist at the LHC that looked like Gordon Freeman in one of the publicity photos.

A lot of people are saying, "Hey, he can afford to buy his own car!" Of course he can. This isn't about helping Joe because he can't afford a car, it's about making a silly Internet meme become reality, and also to help some charities. If you really want to discuss politics, I'd ask that you go over to the politics tab; there are a lot of current stories there that you can discuss. This one is about having fun and doing something neat. If you don't want to join in, you don't have to--that's your choice. I'd just ask that you find a different thread that's more to your liking.

To all of you Farkers that have helped in any way, whether it was contributing with money, or time, or organizing any of this, or helping share the word on your Facebook wall or tweeting it--YOU FREAKING ROCK. Thank you for what you've done, and hopefully what you'll continue to do. This is awesome and everybody who has had a hand in helping to set this up or keep the momentum going is fantastic. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

hbk72777: This thing has stalled out big time. Still at 14 grand?

Let me just whip this out...

Okay, team- just a quick note on the donations. I know you're just as excited as I am to see the donations climb when you look at the Indiegogo site. It's cool to see the chart that shows our progress, and no one can dispute the fact that this cause raised over half of its expected goal in a week. I think that's one giant F-U to the haters, and maybe why we haven't been seeing the volume of thread-shiatters today.

However, I don't want you to get discouraged if the pace of the donations slow. There are some perfectly valid reasons why that could happen. Most of us are between pay periods, or broke. We've seen exponential growth, but that may not continue. It may take time for national attention to bury its way into the thick skulls of John Q. Taxpayer. Also, we are buried under the noise of the middle of the largest national news cycle in four years.

If that happens, ignore the data haters. Do not get discouraged. Consider that donations will flow and ebb based on the forces of economics. We are going to make this work. We are going to attain our goal. Just don't get uptight if it doesn't happen as fast as you want it to.

I dunno. This one is more expensive, but except for the wheels is almost identical to the one in the original Onion article.

If that wasn't an automatic, I'd bid right now.

It's also possible that the current company selling that car would let us have it for a lot less if they could be guaranteed some publicity in exchange for their typical markup. So it's something to keep in mind as we get closer to the end.

2012-10-26 10:32:19 AM
Giving publicity to Joe Biden is like having sex with Lena Dunham.

It just isn't done by rational people.

Let's start this off the accurate way

A note from the Link:

"All the while, Joe Biden has calmly and quietly been an incredible Vice President. He was one of the first politicians to publicly embrace gay marriage and may have been personally responsible for President Obama coming out in favor of gay marriage and the subsequent change in the Democratic Party's platform. He is also a stunningly intelligent politician who understands the nuance of foreign and domestic policy. He is also not afraid to show disdain for factually deficient arguments."

2012-10-26 10:34:05 AM
Is this still going? Even i've grown tired of it.

i'm sure you can get a good enough firebird for 14k. lets just get it and call it a day. move on to phase 2, you're losing the crowd.

Good thinking. They might even be able to come up with the gold honeycomb rims, or a photo-ready mockup of them.

Looking at the BIN amount, I'm going to guess that the reserve is around $14K for that one. I will say that with auto, it's probably a lot easier to sell. The hardcore drivers will want manual, but there are plenty of rich people and dealers who'd prefer auto.

I threw in a few bucks. Biden seems the kind of guy who would crack up at this idea and totally love it. It'd be worth it for his acceptance speech alone.

I'm not dogging anyone. Just my two cents worth.

This whole thing was based on a meme pic of Joe washing his TA. Of the 10 pics on the indiegogo page, one is of the Doctors Without Borders logo, another is a unreadable wall of text, and two are about reaching a specific dollar amount. I have mentioned this before but if there is any way to add more pics on the indiegogo page, it might give more people laughs and bring in more donations.

Additionally, if we can't add more meme pics to the indiegogo page, then can we post a noticeable link to the tumblr.com page that someone is maintaining here. I've only seen that tumblr link posted in Fark.

Comments in the comment section could be posted regularly directing readers to the Tumblr link. Additionally the Tumblr link could have a link back to indiegogo, with encouragement to donate after viewing so many good pics.

I tend to think that if something starts because of a meme pic, it might keep going because of other meme pics. And I certainly don't mean just the ones I've created. There's some hilarious stuff and just because it was posted to a Fark thread and to a Tumblr link doesn't mean it's reaching possible donators.

Again, I'm not dogging anyone. Thanks to all of the people work so hard on all of this.

I chipped in a bit. Would it be utterly tasteless to beg reciprocity? I won't pimp anything until I get an answer, and if this post vanishes entirely I'll take that as a "yes it is tasteless, stop bothering us."
