(The Conversation (Academic))   A new study of data from NASA's Hubble telescope shows that the distant star Fomalhaut b really is a massive exoplanet and squashes claims made last year that it was just a dust cloud. No snark here, just a pretty cool story   (theconversation.edu.au) divider line 12

I skimmed the paper. They see a dust cloud (no thermal emission from an atmosphere). The dust is likely to be associated with a planet because a dust cloud not bound to a planet would disspipate into a resolvable ring in ~50,000 years. But they could see a lucky coincidence or something weird.

I first read that as Bahamut, the giant demon thing in Final Fantasy 7.

Mmmm as I recall from Star Control 2, that was a Ruby world. We should send a mining expedition.

Sooo.. how big is an exoplanet compared to the Sun?

An "enormous burning mass continually varying in shape" orbiting Fomalhaut?

It's obviously Cthugha.

An exoplanet is any planet orbiting a star other than the sun, so the range would be from about Mercury-sized to roughly 10 times the mass of Jupiter. This particular planet is at least as large as Mars and perhaps a few times the mass of Earth.

I'm so confused. Last I heard it was just a planet and now it's just a planet again.

for the planet in question

"The planet is brighter than expected for an object of three Jupiter masses"

First thing I thought of. I recommend sleeping with a large fire extinguisher handy. Fire Vampires really hate those things.

What was that damn Apple ][ battlezone clone game?

Fomalhaut was one of the planets you'd hyperspace to.
