For a comedian, he really fell short on the "comedy" part. Which is probably why people didn't notice it.

Dude has never been funny. Not once, even accidentally.

Dane Cook once said something funny (don't ask me what it was), so yes.

Doug Stanhope is a comedian?

Seen him on tv about 3 things in the UK (primarily Newswipe) and each time it's been about as funny as aids.

Stanhope's not really a joke teller. He does hypocrisy-exposing bits. Sometimes he comes off as an asshole, and sometimes he attacks something you're not guilty of and he doesn't come off as an asshole.

Dude generally makes good points though.

Guess I'm the only one who thinks Stanhope is hilarious.

Doug Stanhope is like Bill Hicks. Only he's more vulgar and actually funny.

Oh, and he's still alive...for now.

Doug Stanhope has been a well respected comedian for years. His brand of comedy is not for everyone, but his fans love him to death. Bill Hicks is a good comparison as well as Dave Attell. The man is an observational comedian and not for mainstream. He talks about topics that make others uncomfortable sometimes but that is more about the person listening than him. He is unafraid to broach any subject and often is aware that what he says isnt for everyone.

I love when people try to say without saying that some people just aren't smart enough to realize how funny Stanhope is. He's an angry petulant child. He is forever whining, but does so aggressively to prevent people from noticing he's a whiner. His stand-up is an extended rant about things that bother him, and the only punchlines are semi-creative ad hominem attacks on people who are trying to impose adulthood on him against his wishes.

You're mad. We get it. Hell, Ben Folds wrote a great song about it. Now shut up.

FTFA: "the details of his latest musical project. Something called Public Image Limited."

can't tell if sarcasm or ignorance. public image, ltd began in 1978 pretty much immediately after sex pistols disbanded

Real life imitates Mitch Hedberg?

I did a radio interview. The DJ's first question was, "Who are you?" I had to think, "Is this guy really deep? Or did I drive down to the wrong station?"

Isn't he the one playing the morose, suicidal comic friend in Louie? That's a chilling episode.

I love Doug, but he's not for everyone. Like this bit, "You make your own christianity" (NSFW, none of his comedy is). Or his bit about suicide.

2012-10-26 09:28:06 AM
And I love when people decide that something they don't dig is worse than Dane Cook and get all butthurt that some people dare say they like it, contradicting said shiatting-upon.

Scorpitron is reduced to a thin red paste: Isn't he the one playing the morose, suicidal comic friend in Louie? That's a chilling episode.

after hearing an interview with louis ck a month or 2 ago, stanhope (about whom i know very little, so merely going by what louis said), there wasn't much acting to be done in that role...pretty much true-to-life doug

Doug Stanhope? Didn't he do the the last couple really awful seasons of The Man Show with Joe Rogan after Kimmel and Carolla quit?

(checks IMDB) - yep, that's the idiot.

Also, he likes to write the introduction to his own Wikipedia page.

I'm a big fan of Stanhope.

I always hear people complaining about illegal immigration and how they're taking our jobs. Listen, if you're worried that some dude crossing a desert, wearing tattered Gilligan pants and doesn't speak a word of English is going to take your job, you have bigger things to worry about than illegal immigration.

Rogan has talked about this extensively. They only agreed to do the show because the network said they wouldn't argue about content. Nudity would be allowed and be blurred, vulgarity would be allowed and beeped. No subject was off limits and they were free to run the show as they wanted.

Then Janet Jackson showed the world her nipple and the suits got all bashful. Suddenly all their material was being censored and cut up, and they couldn't perform the bits they wanted. As usual, the network farked up a potentially hilarious and original show by being complete pussies and backing away from their word.

Longtime member of the sausage army here. The call in bit was fairly funny. It pales in comparison to his live performances though. Those of you who've seen him live know what I'm talking about. I've seen him nearly a dozen times over the last several years. He is, pound for pound, one of the funniest comedians in the country. When you purchase a ticket to see him, you are purchasing a glimpse into the life of a man who is exactly what he portends to be: a reckless alcoholic with a bitter mean streak and a sincere contempt for banality. It is an honor and a privilege to watch the man go down in flames.

Also, the Man Show may have been bad, but those girls gone wild videos were even worse.

Stanhope is hilarious and brutally honest. I can understand why some people don't like him because they are easily offended.

Yeah, he's immature and uses a bit too much vulgarity, but at least he's self-aware. Not every comedic set has to be a set-up followed by a punchline. There are various brands.

Agreed. Some or most even may not appreciate him, but he is 100% not a bullshiatter. There may be a put-on for the build-up of a bit, but the punchline and delivery are always perfectly sincere.

C.K. and Patton are the best two going today, but no one approaches the corners Stanhope chooses to stand in, though pals like Andy Andrist and some of the other Unbookables do great depth-plumbing as well.

his comedy isn't for everyone. his across the street albumn was great. addresses everything people are complaining about here.

puckrock2000: Doug Stanhope? Didn't he do the the last couple really awful seasons of The Man Show with Joe Rogan after Kimmel and Carolla

people write hate mail - "you ruined the man show," like it was some piece of comedic genius to begin with. like it was some masterpiece. like i tried to do monty pyhon and the holy grail part two with jackie mason and andy dick. no it was a turd anyway, it was just their turd. i got paid a bungload of money to ruin that show... i did ruin the man show, i farking raped its corpse. i would ruin that show twice as much again for half the money.

2012-10-26 01:11:23 PM
I love Stanhope. He's one of the few comics with meat in his material. He's not JUST a comic and that bothers some people. He's a philosopher in the true sense of the word. He just delivers it wrapped in comedy which absolutely zero concern for who gets offended.

I wish there were more comics like him.

Meh, any article on fark that mentions a comedian immediately illicits 75% of Farkers chiming in to say how unfunny they are. I remember threads about Louis CK from several years ago, and it was the same thing, but now everyone loves him. You just got to get to a point where it's "okay" to like a comedian (like where LouisCK currently is).

Dying always helps move you into that realm (see Bill Hicks), and Stanhope seems well on his way.

I've seen him live once, and he said said a bit that has always stuck with me ... hard work is overrated. Hard work for the sake of pursuing a passion, a work of art, or something that you love is fine. Hard work for the sake of hard work just to accumulate some wealth to buy some needless crap to impress people makes you a loser. I always think about that when someone is going on and on bragging about their work ethic. They're pretty much announcing "Im an empty vessel".

2012-10-26 02:50:27 PM
If I call him and drop enough hints, do you think he could pretend to be Doug Benson? Because for two incredible minutes that's who I confused him with only to be viciously let down.

I don't get Stanhope and it has nothing to do with offensiveness. I think the best bit on The Aristocrats is Sarah Silverman's since she turns that whole joke into a troubling first-person account of child molestation.
