Nice!

She really is the perfect choice to do a Bond theme. I bet she could belt out the Shirley Bassey numbers.

I could have been Adele singing that, but I took an arrow to the knee.

Can't understand what small flying horses have to do with the film. Guess I need to go see it to understand why we need to worry about sky foal.

Pretty much what a Bond theme should be... Classy. I like it.

2012-10-26 09:02:40 AM
Eh, it's no 'For Your Eyes Only'.

Looked for silhouettes of women with pointy nipples, was disappointed.

Now THAT'S what I'm talking about. You do that from now on!

It's no "Die Another Day", but ok.

Top five Bond theme songs in order of release (coincidence?):

1. Another Way to Die (from QoS) - Jack White & Alicia Keys
2. Goldeneye - Tina Turner
3. A View to a Kill - Duran Duran
2. Goldfinger - Shirley Bassey
1. Original Theme from Dr. No - John Barry Orchestra

It's certainly up these with the classics. I'd also add "Nobody Does It Better" to my list of the best bond themes.

Best song from any Bond film isn't a theme song, it's Louis Armstrong's last masterpiece, "We Have All the Time in the World" from OHMSS.

I like the Chris Cornell one, but it lacks the subtle enigmatic tone of Skyfall, which admittedly is more apt for a Bond theme.

Total bullshiat promo. However, I do have to give it to Adele here. I LOVE Bond themes and she did a great job on this one. I need to play with it in my head a while before I decide ranking, but I don't think it will make top 10 despite being a great song. Not enough crescendo or drama in it. It actually sounds like it could be a track off of Dummy. That's one of my favorite albums of all time, so that's no bad thing, but its certainly not dynamic enough to encompass a Bond film.

Right. It's just that people are acting like they're hearing it for the first time. There was a big promotional campaign for the single ahead of its drop date, nearly a month ago. How...?? Why...?!

What I'm saying is, how come whenever I think, "Oh that'll be covered on Fark within 24 hours," I'm usually wrong?

Yep, I was going to say Chris Connell's tune was the best-written of the bunch. It didn't sound like it was put together from bits and pieces of whatever was popular at the moment.

Best preformance? Shirley Bassey. Man, that woman has some pipes.

I will have to see the movie to place it on the list in reality. See how the song plays in for the movie.

Honestly, I always favor the Original Bond theme from Dr No.

1) Bond Theme (Doctor No)
2) You Know My Name (Casino Royale)
3) World Is Not Enough
4) Goldeneye
5) Thunderball
6) Goldfinger
7) Tomorrow Never Dies
8) Another Way to Die (Quantum of Solice)
9) Live and Let Die
10) All the Time in the World (On Her Majesty's Secret Service)

...

23) Die Another Day

Dr. No is the only Bond theme. All other songs are just introductions for the Dr. No theme. I can't understand how someone could claim to be a fan of the James Bond films and not know this.

Perhaps subby has only read the books prior to this?

Seconded. No offense to the singer or composer of this theme, but Sir Paul set the bar absurdly high.

Great job, though. I'm not an Adele fan, but this is an outstanding entry in the list of Bond themes.

My Top 7:

1. "Goldfinger" theme(Shirley Bassey)
2. "Thunderball" theme(Tom Jones)
3. "Diamonds Are Forever" theme(SB)
4. "Live And Let Die" theme (Wings)
5. "The World Is Not Enough" theme(Garbage)
6. "Goldeneye" theme (Tina Turner)
7. "For Your Eyes" Only (Sheena Easton)

This "Skyfall" theme is quite good.

Seeing that the name of the song is THE James Bond Theme... I can see where you are coming from and I agree. But when talking about Bond Movies. The individual movies have their own themes too. Just like a Bond Girl is the girl that helps Bond throughout the movie (No Mad0nna, just because you were in a Bond movie does not mean you are a Bond Girl!).

Die Another Day

That one with Jack White and Alicia Keys was horrendous.

Bond films always have a solid title theme. I'm having a hard time thinking of a bad one. Picking a favorite is impossible at least for me.

View to a Kill and Live and Let Die....not sure which is first and second but this one falls in with a bunch of other forgettable bond themes, not bad, just...more of the same

Good return to the classic style of Bond theme. I like it and certainly think Adele has the pipes to sing it, especially after the abortion of a theme used inQuantum of Solace. As for the theme in Casino Royale, decent as a song, not good as a Bond theme.

If you are going to label something "the Greatest Bond theme ever", it had better be instantly recognizable by anyone as a Bond theme. As it stands currently, even people who have never watched a Bond movie know it's James Bond when Dr. No's theme starts playing. On the other hand, there are tons of people who have heard "Live and Let Die" or "The Living Daylights" that don't know those are James Bond theme songs. Meanwhile, even people who never saw "The World is not Enough", would know the song is a Bond theme song since it incorporates portions of Dr. No's theme into the song.

That movie was the worse Bond movie ever made. I was screaming at the top of my lungs at the beginning thinking: "Just jump Bond! Damn it Jump! You have survived worse."

After I saw the opening, I knew it was going to be crap... well, that and Haley Barry was not that good in it either.

Your arguing for something we all know, but you don't seem to understand that when everyone else talks about bond themes they are speaking about every intro song other than what is known as the Bond Theme. You don't have waste your time posting about this, or trying to point out a technicality that you seem to be in the minority of people who care about official labels. The precedent is already set and you're not going to change it.

That is why, when I listed my Bond Themes, The Bond Theme from Dr No is listed as #1. It is the original and the best Bond Theme only because it is his, James Bond's, theme and plays in every movie.

I have been watching Bond since I was a kid. It is my favorite movie series of all time. I own all the Bond movies and watch them on a regular basis. If it were not for those movies, being stuck in the hospital and the week after recovering due to a car accident when I was 10, would of sucked.

Hmmm...tough one

1. "Goldfinger"
2. "You Only Live Twice"
3. "Nobody Does It Better" (the theme song to "The Spy Who Loved Me")
4. Original Theme to "Dr. No" (which of course became the ironic James Bond theme)
5. "For Your Eyes Only" (Sheena Easton near her absolute sexiest, RRRRRRRRRRRRROWRRRRRRRRRRR)

"Thunderball" was too over the top for me.

2012-10-26 10:41:39 AM
The "James Bond Theme" is NOT the theme song for "Dr. No"!!!!

Usually when people talk about James Bond themes, it's the song that is played over the opening credits. This would make the theme song from "Dr. No" to be "Three Blind Mice" and not the "James Bond Theme" that we all know and love.

....and would put Three Blind Mice under Madonna's song...just barely, on the technicality that the James Bond format hadn't been fully baked yet.

So, Adele could do a couple of more if she were asked to.

Maybe it's because I've heard that song about a billion times on the radio, but it just doesn't feel like a Bond song. I'm not saying it's bad, and I certainly wouldn't say it's anywhere near the worst of the Bond themes (that would be you, Madonna and Sheryl Crow), but that's just like, my opinion man.

Never Say Never Again is not a Bond Movie. It was not produce through the official Bond production company, Albert R Broccoli Productions (Ion productions). So it is not canonical.

EON Productions, and Barbra Broccoli has been running it for at least two decades.

Never Say Never Again was the bizarre product of a series of lawsuits involving Thunderball. It was originally written as a screenplay by Fleming and a couple other people, with the plans of making it the first Bond movie. That never happened, Fleming sold the rights to what became Eon and eventually one of the co-authors sued. The lawsuits dragged on for years, but eventually the guy was allowed to make a James Bond film, independent of Eon. The title is supposed to have been something Connery originally said when he returned to the Bond series for Diamonds Are Forever.

Agreed. In fact,it's nothing more than an unnecessary-and revolting-remake of the far superior Thunderball. It's quite telling when the least nauseating character in a flick is Mr. Bean lite.

I wasn't arguing with that, it's just that Barbra has been running the company longer than "Cubby" did alone. He originally had a partner named Harry Saltzman, who was the guy who talked Fleming into selling the film rights in the first place; Albert bought him out in the 70s.

I don't know if I'd agree that there's anything resembling canon, when it comes to the Bond films, as there's no continuity to the series, but there are certainly "official" Bond movies, and neither the first two Casino Royale films nor NSNA can be considered part of that series.

What makes the older ones timeless? When I hear them they sound like they're from the sixties, an era of music I don't particularly like either. I think thats a bad way to judge a song. A view to a kill happened long before I saw a Bond movie, but to me its a good theme (and quality movie)

There is a cannon in the Bond films. Little statements here and there show that the movies move along behind each other. Example would be the little statements, spoken and unspoken, about Bond being married once before. Also reoccurring villains like Jaws are also mentioned when seen again. I can see that it is more based on a loose canonical concept.

And sorry, I did not mean to sound like I was arguing. I did not mean to imply that either.

thecpt: What makes the older ones timeless?

They used "timeless" instruments ... strings, horns, etc. that have been used by hundreds of years to make music. Goldfinger has elements of Big Band from the 40s and lounge jazz of the 50s.

As opposed to the Casio CZ-101 in View to a Kill that was relevant for all but about 3 years.

I put "Skyfall" on in the car for my wife, stopped it after about 5 seconds, asked her what it was. "James Bond theme?" she guessed.

Skyfall is a GREAT theme. Classic, recognizable, catchy. Anyone who think "The World is Not Enough" is even close to this is smoking something. It's been decades since we've had a theme some this great.

Skyfall is OK, but for me it's missing the passion that Goldfinger and Live and Let Die had. Both of those tunes got you pumped up before you even saw the first frame of the movie. Skyfall is nice, but a little too polite for me. When I think of Bond I think of the only man in the world who can finish this mission. When I think of the Skyfall tune, I think how much better Amy Winehouse could have done it (the early Winehouse, not the addicted Winehouse) or other singers.

Since Dark Knight, everyone is making moves about anti-heroes. This new Bond certainly qualifies (he's not nearly as witty as previous Bonds). He needed an anti-heroic singer for his theme music. Adele is too much a lady.

Other than that, "You Know My Name", "The World Is Not Enough", "View to a Kill", "Live and Let Die", all good 'uns.

"Die Another Day" sucks.

Without a doubt - Shirley Manson and "The World is Not Enough" is far better.. if not the best.

Dwight_Yeast: Best song from any Bond film isn't a theme song, it's Louis Armstrong's last masterpiece, "We Have All the Time in the World" from OHMSS.

Six_By_Nine: I got a soft spot for "You Only Live Twice".

Check out this version.

Propellerheads - On Her Majesty's Secret Service

It's a mashup of 3 or 4 different themes.

This needs to be here.

The jazz band Sex Mob released an album of reimagined Bond themes called "Sex Mob Does Bond". Amazing album, highly recommended.

Thunderball's is lame, stop putting it in your lists because you're wrong.

I still think "You Know My Name" is the best theme. Haters are welcome.

Aar1012: The Skyfall theme is bad. It tries too hard to be a bond theme and fails miserably

I agree. It's very 'paint by numbers'.

A vote for 'You Know My Name' here.

Adele is wonderful. Superbly talented. Despite all the misogynist prick teenagers ragging on her weight, she'll earn more in a month than they will in a lifetime.

But this Bond theme SUCKS.

1 minute 23 seconds before it picks up. Up until then, it's like a laxative ad.

Bond. Constipated Bond.

Wheel me out, Miss Moneypenny.

"Bond, pay special attention to this walker. We've made several modifications..."

I listened to it. The piano opening is weak, but once Adele gets into it, it's quite good. I like the music from that point, too.

Is it the best? No.

1. Goldfinger
2. A View to A Kill
3. Goldeneye
4. The World Is Not Enough
5. You Only Live Twice
6. Live and Let Die

This one might fall somewhere between 4 and 5 if I listen to it a few more times.

I don't get all the hate for Another Way To Die. Quantum of Solace sucked but the opening sequence is one of the best.

Part of it, I think, is that Jack White's and Alicia Key's voices are too similar. Two good tastes that cancel each other out. I would love to hear a theme song by either one individually.

Part of it is Fark's apparent hatred for Jack White, a hatred I consider irrational in the face of a prolific career of solid garage rock and the fact that he's one of the only actual guitarists left in mainstream music.

Joss Stone did a Bond theme for one of the games, but it was dreadful. Shame, too - she's got a great voice.

YMMV of course, but my recommendations to do a Bond theme:

The Heavy
Lhasa de Sala

mjohnson71: I'm also interested to see how Thomas Newman approaches the score.

Really? The guy that did Short People?

JK, Thomas Newman is farking amazing.

Wellon Dowd: That's my problem with this song: she never belts it out.

That is absolutely correct. As another said, if the song had some payoff to all that setup, it would EASILY be among the absolute best.  Still good, though.

Not bad but not my favourite.
Why does Adele's annunciation always sound like English is her second language?

Okay... I've purchased the single via iTunes. I've also re-listened to these other songs. I've moved Skyfall up to a tie with number 4 on my list. Bond themes usually sound even better in movie theaters (d'uh!), so I'll be interested to hear what this one sounds like there. (Yes, I'm going to pay to see the movie. It looks like it might be worth the price of a matinee ticket.)

Goldfinger is tops, but Skyfall is very very good.

What makes it interesting is the same thing that made You Know My Name good. It takes one of the traditional Bond themes and composes a variation. For my money, I think Chris Cornell did a better job of it, though.

the only good thing about View to a Kill was Tanya Roberts, the song was just Duran Duran phoning it in, and Christpher Walken doing a payhcheck flick.

A real Bond would have never farked Grace Nasty Ass Jones.

Fark that screeching noise. Shirley Manson owns my heart. Plus she had a much better bond theme.

mjohnson71: Angry Buddha: It's no "Die Another Day", but ok.

Top five Bond theme songs in order of release (coincidence?):

1. Another Way to Die (from QoS) - Jack White & Alicia Keys
2. Goldeneye - Tina Turner
3. A View to a Kill - Duran Duran
2. Goldfinger - Shirley Bassey
1. Original Theme from Dr. No - John Barry Orchestra

Wrong, wrong, wrongity wrong. Throw that one into the trash heap with Madonna's "Die Another Day".

Still think this (Link) rejected theme should have been the one they used for QoS. Oh well.

I'd put "For Your Eyes Only" at #1. May be partially due to the fact that it was the first Bond movie I saw as a kid and remember watching it dozens of times. It's a great song and Sheena Easton was gorgeous, which is a plus.

Hebalo: Anyone who think "The World is Not Enough" is even close to this is smoking something. It's been decades since we've had a theme some this great.

The World is not Enough is just one example. Goldfinger also reuses the theme from Dr. No. So does Goldeneye and Diamonds are Forever. Hey, look what they all have in common. They all use Dr. No to make their themes better and easily recognizable as a Bond theme.

You need to rethink what about this song makes you think it sounds like a classic Bond theme™. Perhaps it's because it is reusing cords from Dr. No.

I saw View to A Kill while I was stationed in Korea. I saw it on the biggest damned movie screen I've ever seen in my life. It was in an old-style movie theater that was so big that there were multiple balcony levels, as well as four or five aisles across the main floor. The sound in this theater was awesome, as was the picture. Duran Duran's music sounded great in there, and the aerial scenes over the Golden Gate bridge were dizzying. Oh, and Tanya Roberts looks even better when she's twenty feet tall.

LOL.

Still, pretty good song and I'm definitely not an Adele fan. My problem with these Bond themes is that they have to shoehorn the movie title into a song without it sounding shoehorned.

And then it kinda does.

I think I remember hearing rumors that she'd been approached, but she was too much of a mess to be able to commit to writing something for Quantum of Solace.

Mess or not, whatever she may have done would've been better than the POS we got for QOS.

Tanya Roberts was horrible as a bond girl. She peaked in Sheena, and it's no coincidence she didn't have to act in that.

Well, that has the class orchestration factor going for it along with the true classic Bond.
MI = Lalo Schifrin
Bond = John Barry

and just for shiats n' giggles:
The Avengers = Laurie Johnson
Peter Gunn = Henry Mancini
what else could qualify?

2012-10-28 12:23:25 AM
This song is good and all.. but is it ICONIC? Will it be remembered 30 years from now?

Not even close to the best Bond Theme ever. Maybe top 5

2012-10-28 06:24:03 AM
Tried to listen to it, couldn't make it a full 45 seconds.

1.World is not enough
2.View to a kill
3.For your eyes only
4.all the time in the world

As for which movies in the series I'd even watch again, obviously On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Goldeneye, and maybe Tomorrow Never Dies. Die ANother Day wasn't just the worst movie of the series, it was the worst movie that hit theaters that year. Honestly, you could base an entire personality test around one question, "Bond or Bourne, which do you prefer?"

Bourne of course.

2012-10-28 09:17:15 AM
The song delivery is fantastic. Adele has a wonderful voice, and great timing. However, I have to let the song age a little before I declare it "the best". Having seen all the bond flicks several times, I will smugly say that the best (before Skyfall) were Goldfinger, Nobody Does It Better, For Your Eyes Only, A View To A Kill, Living Daylights, Goldeneye, and You Know My Name. Skyfall already feels better than almost all on my list, except for maybe Goldeneye and Nobody Does It Better. Carly Simon and Tina Turner are difficult to top.

Jarhead_h: Die Another Day wasn't just the worst movie of the series

DAD was indeed atrocious, but there's one Bond flick that's even more despicable: The Living Daylights. Aside from his rocket-equipped car, that movie was mind-numbingly horrible. Utterly devoid of charm. This is literally the most memorable line from the entire movie:

Timothy Dalton (to Jeroen Krabbe): "There's a four-letter word for you,Yogi-and you're full of it."

Never Say Never Again isn't too far behind....

2012-10-29 01:34:06 AM
A View to a Kill is the best song, this one is really pretty meh.

I don't know what this film is supposed to be about, but I can guess if we follow the "evil plot curve" that the last few have established. This one will likely be a renegade Chinese billionaire attempting to legally purchase large amounts of High yield bonds. Possibly even donating money to charity, unless he can be stopped of course. Terrifying.
Absolutely requires the intervention of the British.
