I blame the American media for being a huge part of the reason people are so ignorant and uninformed. They act as if celebutards like things Snooki and the Kardashians actually qualify as "news", while largely ignoring the biggest issues facing the country, and pretend the rest of the world doesn't exist unless there is a major event they can't possibly ignore.

It's pathetic you have to go to BBC, CBC or Al-Jazeera to get any decent international coverage. F*ck cable news.

Aar1012: alltim: sorry to stick my Canadian nose in, but why not have an odd number of electoral college votes, 539 for instance, and avoid this 269-269 nonsense altogether? I know it wouldn't help if more than two candidates ever got any of these votes, but how often does that happen?

If I recall, the 538 is based on the number of people in Congress. 438 in the house (a number set by law) and 100 senators. I don't know why they don't amend the law to add one more representative and make in an odd number. Probably because the fight would be on who gets that extra congressman,

They call also add an extra electoral vote for the popular vote. So you'd get an extra electoral vote if you win the popular vote

Just give it to DC. We've been arguing for representation for years.

National polling doesn't matter. You have to look at the Electoral College polling to determine a projected "winner."

Girl From The North Country: The story on Morning Joe today: Romney up 3 nationally, tied in CO, and Obama has lost 5 points of his lead in NV. No mention of any other swing state. Paint a narrative much there, Joe?

I didn't watch the whole thing (who could?), but I doubt it got much deeper.

Jon Ralston would like a word with Joe.

That's the ridiculous part. He didn't say Romney was ahead in NV, just that Obama lost some of his lead. But that's a pretty nuanced spin for the low information voter to decipher so it is heard as "Romentum" or whatever we're calling it today.

And another thing... Romney was using the 'Forward' line in his stump speeches a couple days ago, and now he's going with 'Change'. I can almost hear his advisors now, "It worked for that one"

FFS!

You don't win by getting the most votes, dude.

DC has been represented in the Electoral College since the 1964 election, in keeping with the 23rd Amendment.

TMYK...

435 for the House, plus 100 for the Senate, plus 3 for the District of Columbia = 538

thank you, I couldn't figure out the other three. It's nice to learn something on Fark. Makes sense now.

wraith95: alltim: that answers my question. I did not know that the 438 + 100 thing was how they got the number. life seems so much simpler here on the tundra.

It may be simpler but you guys seem just as intent on electing douchebags to high office.

I know. The reporters who follow Harper around call him "Shark Eyes" (off the record) because of his empty, soulless gaze.

riverwalk barfly: Mikey1969: markfara: No, no it isn't. Also, I've bought all the pocket catheters I'm going to, so can you please advertise something else? Thank you.

OK, even after turning AdBlock off, I didn't see an ad for those. Are you sure you're on the right story? Maybe you drifted over into fetish land?

No, he/she is correct. It also includes the handy-dandy one that you can conceal in your pocket. And yes, per Pete Townshend, "I hope I die before I get old" .....

I have a deal with my best friend that if either one of us end up in a position of having to use one that we will inject the other one in the neck with an overdose of heroin.

You're both welcome. "Plus 3 for DC" is a good mnemonic, if you want one.

homelessdude: riverwalk barfly: ve said this before but...people that watch MSNBC know that they are being fed Bull'Shiat that reinforces their opinions/beliefs. People that watch Fox news believe that they are getting fair and balanced.....

Yeah, you are right.

I take care of a 80 yr old mother who watches Fox just about every waking moment. While I try to tell her to not take them too seriously, she ardently believes that Fox is the only channel that tells the truth. She believes it so completely that should Obama win in a couple of weeks, she will openly weep at the results because she has been so thoroughly brainwashed to believe that Obama is the devil incarnate.

Its sad, but given her age, I just let it go. She has lived 8 decades and if this is the way she wants to live out her days, she has earned it whether I hold a different view or or not.

So I just keep my mouth shut.

You're a good man.

Yep. Sometimes there are more important things than being right.
