Few years ago there were lots of air conditioning condensers being stolen and sold for the scrap metal, particularly the copper coils. Many of these were new units off new construction. Lately they are being taken from foreclosed or abandoned homes.

I'm quite familiar with the scrap metal business and I can confirm that the whole industry is shady at best, outright criminal at worst. While most of them will cooperate with police when asked, they do the bare minimum to fulfill their legal requirement. They know that a lot of what they get is stolen, and they don't care.
