A long time ago, I worked for a large factory in Tennessee. The workers there would steal anything that wasn't bolted down, and sometimes even that.

I was thinking the same thing. He had to have had some setup to load those things and something to haul them on 11, 800 pound batteries=8800 lbs. so almost 4 1/2 tons. I know he could have made several trips but thinking about just one battery shape of it, what it looked like, etc.

While most of them will cooperate with police when asked, they do the bare minimum to fulfill their legal requirement. They know that a lot of what they get is stolen, and they don't care.

We should shut down the recycling industry, nothing good can come of any industry that encourages people to collect metal that other people have already made stuff out of.

/also, remove all the catalytic converters from cars, that's where the majority of atmospheric carbon dioxide comes from

More or less. Except other industries at least pretend to care about following laws. Someone stole the manhole covers in town here awhile back. They were labeled as such. Cast iron, so if the thief was smart he just smashed them up and mixed them in with a load of tin, but I have little doubt the scrap yard here would have taken them as-is anyway. They'll even take a car, as long as it's properly cut up, without a title, no questions asked.

Recycling is a great thing, but seriously, don't leave anything made of aluminum or copper laying around for long or it WILL be stolen. Crack ain't cheap.

I think the whole idea behind crack is that it is so cheap, or they'd just be buying some drug with better value. Buying crack is like buying single cigarettes from the corner store for a dollar a piece.

My guess would be, the answer to both questions is "forklift". "Pallet jack", as seen above, is a good answer too, but not quite big enough.

You really don't want to be using a gasoline, diesel, or propane powered forklift anywhere that you can't bear the exhaust stinking up the place. Ergo, battery-powered forklifts. The batteries for these suckers tend to weigh about that much apiece. And since you asked, they look like this.
So the warehouse company buys battery powered forklifts, and an even dozen batteries to go with them.
Thief uses one forklift to steal the other batteries. Of course, he can't lift the last one-as its installed in the forklift he's driving-so he lets it go.

Presumably, he was also driving a getaway-flatbed, to be hauling 8800 lbs.

1) You'd be amazed what warehouse guys will believe if you bullshiat em right. Flatbed driver comes up and says he's here to swap the forklift batteries, new ones will be in the next truck...
2. Sure. How did YOU think cigarettes got to stores. Answer: same way as everything else, in pallets of thousands. that have to be moved by forklift. This was just one laterally-thinking thief, to go after general equipment instead of stuff unique to that shop. And as I said, tobacco companies wouldn't want their merchandise stunk up with exhaust fumes from a gasoline-burning forklift, so...

This recession is cleaning up the landscape. The cars and appliances are disappearing from the rednecks yards. Even the river beds and embankments are getting scoured for scrap.

I work with those. Last time we replaced a string the haulers brought in a crane to get them from the basement to the truck.
Fun fact I learned just the other day: You can neutralize the acid by adding cement powder, then you can use the resulting lime as lawn fertilizer.

Wow he only got $1800 for almost 6 tons, I recycle a lot of old car batteries and if I bring in more then 1000lbs worth they give me $0.50/lb this guy got fleeced
