It occurred during a wave of Muslim protest over an anti-Islam film produced in California, which also sparked violence against U.S. diplomatic missions in Tunisia and Egypt.

Because Al Qaeda is the only Islamic terrorist organization in the Middle East? Not saying it might not have been Al Qaeda, but this by no means removes all doubt it wasn't.

The Beatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves: Hoisted by his own retard?

Hoisted by his own petard would work too, since a petard was meant to be a small explosive. I've heard it was meant to be a fart joke, as in he had to smell his own "small explosion", but the literal meaning would work as well.

If the GOP were in charge and the Democrats whined about how much the public was informed and when:

"You know what? We got one of them and we are after more. We don't place a high priority on letting the pubic, and, more importantly, the terrorists who killed our people know what we know and when we know it. We are more focused in capturing or killing the perpetrators. The Democrats are just going to have to deal with that."

Crap- was that so hard Obama? I know you are going to win the election but firing a shot across these opportunistic assholes' bow is not going to cost you votes at this point. Might even boost the turnout of the base.

Remember when Dan Rather tried to float that story about Bush's decades old National Guard service? The media went wild until they realized the evidence was fake.

Anybody notice the media protecting obama by not asking questions about what really happened during the Bhengazi terrorist attack. The difference between this scandal and Watergate? No one died over Watergate. Our Ambassador, 2 Navy Seals and another American were slaughtered and the left couldn't care less. You obamorons are disgusting and pathetic!

I seem to recall, the NIGHT of the attack, there were "unconfirmed" reports of an attack using the demonstrators as cover. Do you know what unconfirmed means? Jeez, were you in a comma or something? And if you were in a comma you have my deepest sympathy. You probably shouldn't be typing. You should lie down.

What's disgusting and pathetic is republicans in general and Romney specifically getting a hard on when this happened and couldn't wait to politicize it.

The White House failed at basic Public Information Officering 101. The best thing to have said in the immediacy of the situation would have been something like,

"My fellow Americans, today a tragic attack occurred on our consulate in Benghazi Libya where Ambassador Stevens and 3 other brave Americans have lost their lives. The investigation as to whom was responsible for this tragic event is ongoing and we will advise you further as we uncover firm and incontrovertible evidence as to identity of the perpetrators of this heinous act, and we will pursue their being brought to justice with our every effort."

You tell the people what happened and not tell them anything about what the spooky people who get stuff done are doing (or that you know nothing...) If they had said something like this, Libya would be a non issue. instead we have what we have now, where the president and his men look like amateurs.

Counter-terrorism is kind of like a poker game. If you reveal your hand too early (in this case, that you know it was an organized terrorist attack), you play at a huge disadvantage. The Obama administration may have been perfectly justified in not publicly revealing everything they knew as they were going after those responsible--perhaps their relatively weak public statement made the terrorists complacent, thus making them easier to hunt down.

2012-10-25 10:59:12 PM
I still haven't heard from anyone what would have been gained by telling the terrorists we knew that it was a terrorist attack on that first day. Although everyone is blasting Obama for not admitting what was pretty obvious, nobody has yet come up with even an unconvincing reason why he should have actually SAID anything about terrorism on that day. What would have been gained? What was lost by not saying anything?

I can tell you what advantages were made by NOT calling it a terrorist attack: The next day, people were discussing the courage and compassion of the Libyan people in taking the dead and wounded to the hospital; the Libyans and Egyptians were condemning the terrorists on their own; within two weeks, Libyans were attacking the militia and terrorist bases (again, without prodding from the US); and the Libyans had captured the individuals responsible for the Ambassador's death.

I can tell you what didn't happen: The terrorists didn't get headlines and adulation; they didn't get credit for blasting a hole in the wall of the Embassy and killing an Ambassador and rousing the wrath of the Great Satan. They got buried under global annoyance at a crappy video. The worst thing of all for terrorists--they got ignored. And not just ignored, they got minimized, their great attack attributed to someone else's justifiable anger. Sometimes there is a very good reason for not revealing all you know, and in this case, it was to deny the world's deadliest attention whores the attention they so desperately need.

That's exactly what I was talking about. They could have simply cloaked the whole incident in noncommittal language instead of jumping on the OMG IT'S THAT VIDEO THAT CAUSED THIS and then denying that they ever blamed the video. It's one thing to play the game in such a way where you maximize your efforts to catch the people responsible, and quite another to make it look like no one in your administration is talking to each other and knows what is going on. It's rank amateurism and has been a symptom of this administration since day one. I'm rather surprised Hillary with her experience has allowed herself to become embroiled in a debacle of this magnitude.

Also, to keep this somewhat on-topic, and not just a general rant,

Hmm, I'm currently positing roughly 80/20 you'll end up on my ignore marked as "threadshiatter troll" before the weekend, but in the meantime, do you care to enlighten us as to exactly what felony you believe Obama to have committed at Benghazi?

Before you hastily end up saying something that makes you look very foolish, keep in mind that the nature of Nixon's high crime was a direct assault against the very foundation of American democracy itself. Bear furthermore in mind that if your answer has anything to do with somehow "allowing" a security lapse, you'll have to indict GWB a dozen times, Clinton several times, GHWB a few times all for the same thing, and St. Reagan deserves a needle in the arm for the marine barracks at Beirut.

I agree the messaging could've been better handled. But do remember, with the Republicans we're talking about people who've quite literally tried to attack the President's choice of lunch condiments - I guarantee you, no matter what he or Crawley or anyone said, the GOP would've somehow been attacking him for something the very next day. See: Mitt's navy argument, Obama schools him, GOP... babbles about bayonets.
