This one is a spitting image of my grandfather, were he to have worn a beard.

The first one looks too real, it looks like a re-enactment picture. Amazing stuff. Now they just need to do it with every other picture ever, and paintings. Make a painting of Edward I look like a modern photo, ooh, ooh, make a mosaic of two Romans havin' freaky sex look real, no wait, a cave painting, make the beasts they drew look real, and dinosaurs, give us dinosaurs.

That one is spectacular. I've done a few colorized photos for my family - thanks to mad photoshop skills I learned on Fark. I can tell someone spent a lot of time on this one and a lot of CTRL-Zs were performed.

The Saigon one cheat a bit there is existing color video. no points given

That was amazing. Well worth the slideshow. The picture of Anne Frank gave me chills. The black and white photo of her didn't really capture her. But the colorized photo made her so much more real.
The colorized photos of Lincoln were so real looking. Great job.

2012-10-25 06:28:21 PM
Aside from the Lincolns, most of these have been colorized repeatedly. These are really good, the work on the Burning Monk is stunning.

After seeing Lincoln I now have background music from Ken Burns' Civil War in my head. Damn violin..

I was all prepared to use Orson Welles' line about Ted Turner colorizing "Citizen Kane," but upon seeing this work, I'm pleasantly surprised. Amazing stuff - especially the photo of Quang Duc immolating himself. Rendered me speechless.

According to the artist quite some time. Anywhere from forty minutes to three hours!

Almost every one of them overdone. As if the retoucher had never seen an actual color photograph.

It can, but doesn't always. Also it depends on the exact look you're going for, do you want something that looks like it was an actual color photo or something more stylized?

imageshack.us

that took me about 20 minutes. But then I was trying to make it look kind of like an old color print ad.

Actually it's more an effort to copy the look of old color photos and hand tinted photos. If you look up color photos, yes they exist, from 100 years ago, or hand tinted photos from then or even earlier the colors are usually fairly intense and the overall look is not what we're used to from color photos.

Here's an example of what I mean,

http://Shorpy.com/ has dozens and dozens of these (it helps to have started with a large-format negative), ranging from attractive to damned fine--well worth a look:

/Somewhere out there is a beautifully colorized version of a much-reproduced 1940s Hollywood-area photo (traffic, buildings, etc.)...I'll post it I can find it. It looks like a slightly toned-down Kodachrome--very convincing.

My Great-Grandfather, front and center.
It's not that difficult, except for the skin tones.
I think our eyes are attuned to skin tones more than anything, so that we can recognize healthy chicks that we would like to bone. So if they are off just a little bit, it will really be noticeable.

If anybody wants to try their hand on old Civil War images, go here for very high resolution source material.

I've been restoring a lot of the 3D images, but haven't tried colorizing them first. It's a big enough job taking out the dust and scratches.
