Unlike last years Halloween surprise that left us without power for 11 days, at least we're getting a little warning this time. Hopefully the last one wiped out enough trees near my power lines, and the wind will knock the rest of the leaves off that were collecting so much snow last time.

Just ran the Generator for 10 minutes to make sure she'll fire the first time. Glad I did, it took a bit of effort to get it going again. Kerosene and Gasoline run tomorrow.

There is none, so lets quit with all the conspiracy nonsense, you give credense to our political enemies as us being paranoid hick morons.

Last year's storm was epic, 10 inches of wet heavy snow on still green leaves. Power was out for 7 days, had commuted to work from the inlaws 50 miles away. Never again.

I really hope that is not the same forecast this year. Last year we had a tornado pass half mile from our house, a hurricane, an earthquake, and a freak snowstorm.

GFS hasn't had a good handle on Sandy over all. ECWMF has been the more accurate model this go-round, but they're all having trouble handling Sandy's extratropical transition in a couple of days. And the models are still out on how strong the trough plowing through the midwest will finally end up being as well as the strength of the ridge over the Atlantic. She's stuck between a rock and a hard place, it seems.

Hopefully the next few model runs will have things sorted out since all the WFOs are doing extra radiosonde launches and it looks like the NOAA Gulfstream Gonzo jet is out doing samples.

Mainly because the forecasts go out over systems that are older than most of us and they only render caps. Things like telefax, and TTY. They've tried to get rid of those systems, but the uproar that happens every time they have keeps them online.

For reasons unknown Mr.Kritter is neither welcome nor invited there. Nice, huh?

was left without electric for days. sucked big time. insurance company was useless. no one wanted to come take away the downed tree and wait for a check from the insurance company. it was a learning experience.

here we are a year later, everything fixed and of course insurance co jacked up rates up sky high because we put in ONE claim. the dooshbags that own the wooded property near us that has been the cause of damage to our house has never once done any maintenance to their property or trees. and the dooshbag that owns the house next to us which has been overpriced for sale for years leaves up a row of trees between our houses (on his property) which is a threat to both houses. he is an arsehole.

Thats why you should vote third party, since your D vote is a waste, waste it on someone you actually agree with, plus if third parties get enough votes in the popular vote they have an easier time the next election cycle getting on all of the ballots.

aevorea: MelGoesOnTour: I'm in the South of Florida and we've been getting some pretty good wind for the past few days and the storm is no where near us. I feel bad for the easterner's who aren't used to a REAL storm and might likely blow it off (no pun) and be unprepared.

Luckily, I lived in FL for 15 years and moved up to New England last November. I'll probably be one of the few calm ones in a 50 mile radius!

/Bottled water, restock on vital meds, stock up on food that doesn't need to be heated, get some cash out.
//Oh, and alcohol. LOTS of it.

Heh...yep, we're good friends with Cap'n Morgan ourselves, especially when the bad weather (and inevitable power outages) rolls in! And don't forget ice, not just for food but for the beer. Oh, and plenty of rye bread, cheese, hard salami, etc....stuff that doesn't need to be kept chilled.

Unless, of course, there's a storm surge and lots of flooding.

Because then there could be a..........

Truly this Frankenstorm is the end of times. We shall not survive, nor should we try, as the coming tribulations usher in the imminent FINAL HORRORS OF MAYAN MADNESS. LAVA! EARTHQUAKES!! MAYHEM!!! AND THEN....well, it doesn't matter, we won't be around for it, but yeah, it's gonna be bad. Big storm.

This is annoying. I have a friend getting married sunday in NC. I am traveling from NH to NC to get there by car. I figure it won't be a problem getting down there, but even if I drive back leaving at the ass crack of dawn on monday morning I figure it could be a "fun" trip.

At least I won't be flying.

Am I crazy for not canceling the trip?

you have pee hands: CheapEngineer: Throw that same storm at North Carolina, or Mississippi, and it's "meh." A cloud heads for New York or DC and the entire country must stop what it's doing and join in prayer for those who may get *moist*.

The Midwest gets tornadoes and massive snowstorms and all you see on the news is "What do they expect? They live in the country's crotch! Who's on Idol this week? "

\whats worse, I have never lived in a state that anyone bothers to campaign in, or the primaries are already decided by the time I see a voting booth

\\\f y'all is right (grumble)

Storm surge can be really damaging to places that aren't used to it, like Manhattan and Des Moines.

True. I did some work in Jersey on the shore and my boss there said despite the evacuation route signs (which just mainly pointed you away from the ocean) from what he heard from the planners that worked on em they'd still be screwed if that ever happened.

Since that office was across the street from the beach *and* basically a basement (half of it was above street level, half not) he paid attention to such things.

Smartened up after all the multiple day outages here in the northeast. Buy a 4000 watt generator and a 5-way splitter so you can run your fridge, oil burner, tv with sattelite connection, laptop, and a few lights. If I had 8 grand I'd have a hardwired generator with the auto switch to power the whole house. Have probably lost power for close to 20 days over the last 5 winters.

Dog carcass in alley this morning, tire tread on burst stomach. This city is afraid of me. I have seen its true face. The streets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of blood and when the drains finally scab over, all the vermin will drown. The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout "Save us!"... and I'll look down and whisper "No."

Worst Storm in 100 Years Seen for Northeast

Bloomberg

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-10-25/u-s-east-from-washington-to- n yc-at-risk-from-hurricane-sandy.html

There are two extra variables here which could exacerbate the impact:
1) A full moon on Monday, leading to extra flooding
2) Combining with the storm coming out of the Midwest.

I agree the breathlessness has sounded like herpa derp (derp derp), but in the Mid-Atlantic, we saw what the derecho (inexplicably) did - unprecedented tree damage and a solid week long power outage for a lot of folks. So while it could range from clouds and breezy to OMG FRANKENSTORM, people in Maryland especially are keeping a close eye on it.

The company that operated the Fitz was a Cleveland Ohio based company and 14 of 29 crewmembers were from Ohio. I think those facts would give Great Lakes and the Edmund Fitzgerald a few ties to Erie.

Englebert Slaptyback: you have pee hands

Why are their forecasts in all upper case? Even if it's not some timecube-esque screed, that shiat is still hard to read.

I think it's a holdover from the telegraph (and later, mainframe) days. Seriously.

It's the same reason a lot of key entry still follows old conventions: It's designed to be fully compatible with the lowest-grade systems that might be picking it up. Up until suprisigngly recently, teletype was still the most common means of receiving this kind of 'wire copy,' and so wire-delivery services are designed to those older standards. The alternatives would be either much costlier delivery or accepting that some portion of recipients would no longer get readable NWS reports. (And to those getting ready to scream about upgrades, try to appreciate the fiscal realities of people and places unknown to you. Not eveyrone is ready to replace their old systems that still work and are paid for, but everyone needs weather reports.)

I was very interested in the discovery and investigation of the wreck some years back. Turned out the ship was hugely overloaded, way past its rated max capacity. I'm sure some smart guy assured everyone that cargo limits were artificially low in order to ensure fine$ for regulator$ prentending they were only concerned about $afety. 29 people dead, a ship lost, and millions in collateral loss, but hey, accidents are gonna happen.
