There are many ways to sum up this topic, but I believe you chose the most succinct.

To be fair, overrated now means "Who does ESPN talk about the most without that person having really done anything to deserve such praise." That person used to be Romo, then it was Vicki, then Tebow, now it seems like a cross between RGIII and Cam Newton.

WTF Indeed: now it seems like a cross between RGIII and Cam Newton.

That said, I think one could make a pretty compelling argument for the Redskins being 0-7 without Griffin.

Yeah, when I hear people biatching about someone being overrated, I ask, "Who overrates them?" I've never gotten an answer outside of "ESPN."

I don't understand how Romo and Sanchez can even be on the list this year considering the only coverage they get is negative.

Last years list of overrated NHL players is a prime example.

2012-10-25 03:21:04 PM
lets say over-rated for his draft position 1st rounder, 5th overall
lets say he is overpaid by salary, he signed a 3 year extension for 40.5m in 2012

for a guy who is usually considered one of the lesser starting qbs in the league (like bottom 1/3rd?)

this would seem kind of over-rated.

/admittedly as mentioned above, this would all be by jets management

At one point ESPN had a dedicated Tebow blog. Your argument is invalid.

Yeah that about settles it. And even then. I dont think they really like him that much, they are just publicly tied to him. I dont think theres anyone in the league outside the Jets org. thats saying much positive about this kid.

To clarify, he's not terrible. He's obviously far from spectacular. But I dont see how hes overrated.

Tebow on the other hand. Yeah that makes sense.

The Dallas Cowboys have a Canadian guy named L.P. Ladouceur as a long snapper. I only know who he is because he's never missed a long snap for the Cowboys.

He never missed a snap to the former punter/fg holder brad maynard for their combined tenure (2001-2010). Not sure if that stat has continued with the new punter.

Not nearly enough love for a player that has been perfect for your team for 10 years. Hard to imagine anything in the NFL could be as "routine" as those guys make it look.

One time during gym class or something during HS when I was on the football/soccer field with some other kids, we did have a football on us and the brilliant idea to "try long snaps" somehow came up. I was first to try it, with the "punter" 10+ yards back, and I managed to hike it straight into my grundle and it caught a part of my nuts as well. There was something disorienting about looking between your legs and seeing someone standing fairly far back that made me think I had to put more arch and height on the release than necessary.

Supposedly Mannelly's streak of perfect long snaps extended all the way back to high school.

Surprisingly, both of last season's Super Bowl quarterbacks, New England's Tom Brady and the Giants' Eli Manning, got votes for "most overrated" as well, with Brady garnering 2 percent and Manning 1 percent.

Votes by who, TMZ reporters that wouldnt know a football game from The Price is Right??

They are both overrated. They're extremely good, but the coverage of them would have you believe that they've gone undefeated for the past five years, with both of them winning all of the Super Bowls.

What about ball boys? They're totally unappreciated. You kicked the ball into the stands? No worries. You threw it halfway down the field to no one in particular? I've got your back, bro. You want to keep it to give to your mama? That's cool. I've got another one right here we can use.

How can you be a SB winning QB and be overrated? I think deserve whatever praise comes their way, even if it means admitting that Elisha is a good .... hold on.... gagging..... quarterback. There HAS to be some point where you allow them the praise. If you just call everyone overrated, then the word doesn't mean anything any more.

It's like saying everybody who loses "choked."
It's like saying everyone who loses a lead "had a meltdown."
I have more of those, but I can't think of them right now & I actually do have to do some work occasionally. I might think of them later. But seriously, hyperbole is the worst thing ever.

2012-10-25 04:06:55 PM
Snark aside:

Long snapping is a fark of a lot harder than it looks. I used to do a little kicking, back in the day, and my snapper and I switched back and forth a couple times a month, just to make sure we knew where the other was at in their job performance.

NO position in football is 'easy' at the NFL level. Long snapper is one of the toughest, and most under rated.

Who the hell over-hypes the Cowboys nowadays? It's the favorite topic to pile on in the media:

"Dude, we got like 5 minutes of free air"
"Let's talk about the problems Cowboys have"
"But we just did that and nobody really sees the Cowboys as a contender anymore"
"But they're still America's team and people will watch it."
"OK, run it"

Sports Illustrated asked the same question in a survey of players last year, and Tebow, who was then with the Broncos, also came in first. But last year he only had 22 percent of the vote. So Tebow's fellow players think he's only getting more overrated with time.

This is why PFT should just stick to spreading sourceless rumors and leave all statistical analysis to others.

Vick is THE most overrated. Tebow is only rated #1 b/c most of the players are black and Tebow is white.

Sounds legit. Tebow is the only white player in the league after all. Sanchez was only rated #2 b/c he's hispanic fyi.

It would seem that the media has remorse for building a bandwagon for a player and that player not delivering the championship. They forget that their media coverage is what hyped up the expectation for the player. If the media as a whole was a single person it'd be a classic diagnostic of bi-polar nervous issue.

i don't know why i listen to as much STR as I do. "the QB gets too much credit when the team wins, and too much blame when the team loses". And yet the very ones that create the credit are the first to lambatse the guy when he loses.

Everyone with a camera and a microphone.
Hype doesn't mean they think they'll win. They just get talked about too damn much.
Same goes for Philly and the NFC East as a whole. Jets are next.

I don't need a 5 minute segment on the NFC East every Sports show. Cover anyone else.

Well, the NFC East gets coverage right now for a few reasons, but the primary one is that of the television markets, the NFC EAST represents #1, 4, 5 and 8 in terms of sheer number of television viewers.

Not just because of the Cowboys.
