Colbert is the edgiest dude on TV since the first few shows on SNL, lo, so many eons ago. His show can be monotonous, but when he scores, he scores BIG!

If I were Trump, I'd call his bluff. There's nothing to lose, because you know Colbert wouldn't really whip out his nuggets on public.

Y'know, I'm not sure about that.

It seems to me that they two men are very similar in that they both live in kayfabe, Colbert playing a character named Colbert, Trump playing a character named Trump. Don't forget that Trump's Yoda is his buddy Vince McMahon, who played a character named Mr. McMahon in his own universe. Trump even played a character named Trump in that universe. Or maybe he was playing a character named Trump playing a character named Trump. I used to think he was a real-world douchebag, but I'm starting to think that he's the ultimate "meta" genius, just playing the part of a douchebag in an elaborate game of street theater and never breaking character.

Awesome. Too bad that the mainstream media doesn't have the balls (pardon the pun) to take a cue from this and routinely call Trump out on his carnival barking antics.

I got an email from one of my Tea Party wingnut uncles this morning, expressing outrage over this. "What happened to decency? What's wrong with you liberals?" To which I responded, "What happened to decency when a bloviating sh*tgargler tries to effectively blackmail the president in exchange for yet another 15 minutes in the spotlight?"

Colbert may have made a literal teabagging joke, but Trump's stunt is far, far more offensive.

The impression I've gotten so far is that the toothless media is treating this as an actual story with two sides. You know, the whole "even retards have equal weight" crap that has legitimized the birther and other movements. It wasn't always like this. The press used to ignore the Birchers of the world. Now they're given center stage and treated as though they are just as valid as a sitting president.

One could hope, but sometimes I think Emmy voters think they are getting two-for-one when they vote TDS.

When they were talking about giving Colbert his own show, I thought it'd be far better to extend TDS by 30 minutes (to get rid of what has now become 5-7 minutes of commercials, "Jon 'n' Stephe's Fun-Time Banter-Talk" and Colbert's [admittedly kind of funny] opening). Give Colbert The Word and another segment or two ("Better Know a District" is amazing every time) and keep the whole thing under the TDS banner.

Colbert is less funny when he has to play both sides of his own game. It's limiting and probably a bit frustrating for him to have to play Papa Bear all the time, which is why more and more he's dropping character. If Stewart was his straight man for 20-30 minutes a day, I think he'd have an easier time.

And TDS would never have to worry about an Emmy-less year until Stewart retired.
