I guess we'll be switching from human to terran. It's only fair since women are getting trashed in college performance.

/Bravo for the distinction between gender and sex .

Hey look its, some more butthurt white boys attempting to grasp on to the last vestiges of privelege they have left! Maybe if you all would just sit down, shut up, and listen to those oppressed by the white male patriarchy maybe, just maybe, there wouldn't be so many women and peoples of color farking PISSED off at you! God is really that hard to change your use of a few racist, sexist, imperialist words? Do we you really excercise your privelege in every day conversation? Do the oppressed need to be reminded how oppressed they are as soon as thy step out from their safe space?

Oohhh ooh, I know! Let's all make frustrated snarky jokes on the internet! That will surely keep our sexist privelge going a couple more generations! Screw those uppity women!

And I do not see the issue of being called Freshman... Most likely cause the part that contains "man" in it just blends in to the entire word in my mind.

1/10. You started out great with the platitudes, but to sell the troll you need to start using meaningless terms in an attempt to crassly stop all rational debate. You may get some other bites though. :)

I think the biggest bullshiat pcism I saw at college was the use of "his/herstory. Yes, because a gender neutral word that just happens to have three letters in it that make up a word denoting gender means the word is sexist.

2012-10-25 09:18:01 AM
also subby the term "long term financially obligated clients" doesn't really apply to carolina...
for one thing at less than 5k/year in state, it's one of the best bang for your buck universities in the country.

for another they kick your ass out pretty quick if you don't finish in 5 years. in fact you have to apply for those 9th and 10th semesters. they want you gone.

(and then earning so they can start harassing you for alumni contributions)

I think the real story here is that it's taken this long for UNC to do this. I've been on faculty at several universities that don't "officially" use the word freshman. At least one hasn't used the word since the late 90s.

The amount of derp in this article is astounding. First of all, the term first-year has been the standard official term since way back when I was in college. It doesn't stop students or professors from using freshmen, but its the term used by administration. The made-up objections he had to the other words was pathetic. And really no one uses sophomore, junior, or senior anymore because college take students anywhere from 3-6 years now. Students move very much at their own pace. Fake butthurt for a nothing story-- pathetic.

mat catastrophe: So, yea. The word has a definite masculine context that has no place in the world today. Sorry, dudes, the patriarchy train is real and it needs to be taken out.

If women had been obligated to be the head of the family as men had in the past, the word for new students in college would be freshwoman. The only difference is, when men started going to school themselves, they wouldn't have blamed it on the matriarchy or complained about how oppressed they are despite having the highest middle class standard of living any human being has experienced in the history of humanity.

Seriously, if we live in such a patriarchy, then why is it that every time women ask for something like a place at work, or an education, everyone bends over backwards to give it to them? That doesn't really sound like an oppressive patriarchy to me.

As a faculty member at a private school in North Carolina, and an alum of UNC, let me say that in no way is UNC at the forefront of rethinking how we term students.

The term "first-year student" rather than freshman, has been around for years. It's only now that non-academics are aware of it and can express their dissatisfaction with the change.

2012-10-25 10:35:05 AM
Ummm...was this something that had to be addressed? Was the 'man' in Freshman really offending people? The person who brought this up, is it the same caliber of people who when someone walks up to the group they are in and says "Hey guys!" they spout off with "Don't you mean 'Hey people'? since we are not all guys in this group." Does this person spell the female gender as Womyn?

I don't really have time to explain to you how an entrenched system becomes so pervasive that it remains invisible until steps are taken to remove it.

The relative gains of women (or minorities, for that matter) in the last two centuries does not mean that the patriarchy (or racism) is no longer real or that it no longer plays a role in society. People such as yourself like to point to statistical outliers as evidence that "everything is A-OK now" because, say, there's a female governor in South Carolina.

But that is not indicative of society at large and how women deal with a system that still overwhelmingly favors males, which is precisely the reason it is incumbent upon public (and private) bodies to work toward the elimination of these inequalities.

Again, arguing over a term for a first-year university student is a petty squabble in the larger issue of gender equity in American society but it's probably a decent place to start.

Oh, and you should know that I am entirely skipping over the abysmally ignorant tripe in your first paragraph, since it was stupid enough to not really warrant any serious thought or reply.
