We do have another word other than "man" and "woman" - "it"

So it would be "freshiat"

When I was at the University of Michigan in the 90s, the term used by the university then was freshperson, so I'm sure this isn't all that rare.

I guess we'll have to rename the senior class, too, so that we don't offend old people.

Then rename the junior class so we don't offend young people or people who have the same name as their dad.

Then we'll rename the sophomore class because we're on a roll.

I may be setting myself up here but what's so horrible about taking a term put into place when women were pretty much forced to stay home cooking and raising kids and updating it to be more inclusive?

Is it change you're against?

Do you think the Redskins are an appropriate name for a football team just because they always have been?

There's something to be said for reasonable legitimate change (as opposed to PC run amok) that shouldn't get your panties twisted.

For fark's sake... Go take a freakin' language class, lady. There is nothing gender specific about the word Freshman. Just because it contains the letters M A and N in that order doesn't mean it's referring to men.

Maybe next time, before you step up in front of the entire country and make an ass out of yourself, you'll take a few minutes to study up on the etymology of the word.

I'm not opposed to change, but this seems kind of pointless. The term was put in place when women were forced to stay home in the kitchen raising kids, and now more women get degrees than men. The whole culture has changed. That matters. What impact will changing freshman to first year have that hasn't already been accomplished. Obviously, the term being what it is hasn't kept women from achieving educational advancement.

I'm fine with them changing/updating the terminology, I just don't see how it matters in the grand scheme of things or why it's worth a headline.

You're an idiot.

Honest Bender: For fark's sake... Go take a freakin' language class, lady. There is nothing gender specific about the word Freshman. Just because it contains the letters M A and N in that order doesn't mean it's referring to men.

You mean how it means "first year student"? Yea, that is pretty gender non-specific. Except, of course, that it dates from the mid 16th century....when women did not go to school at all.

So, yea. The word has a definite masculine context that has no place in the world today. Sorry, dudes, the patriarchy train is real and it needs to be taken out.

Admittedly, petty squabbles over meaningless language is not the best fight to fight in this arena. There's pay disparity and unequal expectations of work/life balance that figure into the mix, but since politicians are unwilling to address the issue in any meaningful sense, we can amuse ourselves with this sort of issue.

Instead of dropping the term altogether, just make a new term to cover the females.

Freshmen for the guys, sorority sluts for the girls.

See, simple solutions are often the best solutions.

It was always fresher at my [Australian] university. But that's not the point, eh.

Mate I'm old enough to remember when the PC movement was ALL POWERFUL. You have no idea.

One our biggest TV sports-presenter personalities almost lost his job for mentioning during a Winter Olympics broadcast - in passing - that women liked shopping. Fark, you should have witnessed the shiatstorm that ensued. There were freaken televised debates with expert panellists. Often with the sports-presenter chump himself wheeled in to explain himself sit there glumly while some sour faced lesbian feminist berated him for being a pig.

People would dead set get fraught with angst if words like "chairman" were seen in print, rather than "chairperson."

Then one day... I kinda noticed that all the uppity biatches started using words like "chairman" again. Just like magic. What a farking fad.
~
I also noticed some time maybe ~15 years ago actresses no longer referred to themselves as actresses. They were actors. Pretty sure even some of the major acting awards changed wording when bestowing statuettes and gongs.

Honest Bender: etymology

I just did ""newcomer, novice," from fresh (1) + man (n.)"

And what makes you assume I'm a lady?

I think calling me an ass is the pot calling the kettle black.
