kibbled: Dumb-Ass-Monkey: CSB time

I broke my leg a couple years ago. Which meant that I got to ride the gimp scooters at different stores. So naturally, I downloaded the Speed Racer theme, plugged speakers into my MP3 player, and would putt around Walmart in the scooter playing that song at full volume. People would either look at me like I was crazy, or would laugh at the inherent silliness of it.

Were you wearing a shirt with three wolves on it?

I might just man-love you for that comment!

Another vote for Speed Racer. Incidentally, I didn't like the original cartoon, but loved the movie. As was said before, people will eventually come around and appreciate it. IMHO it's great.

Total love

Someone (Ebert, and I'm too lazy to google) said that it's probably the most expensive avant-garde movie ever made.

And I agreed in my head

Loved both- what's wrong with good clean silly fun? It's not like it's pretending to be high art, after all. It's eye candy, not The Thinker.

But the Royalton part could have been edited down a bit without hurting the movie, IMHO...

Zombie DJ: If they edited it down, I would have loved it more.
Other than that, it's a fun movie. I own the dvd.
If you're pissed about it, well, go farking die cause there's more to be pissed about than a farking cartoon of a movie.

ELF Radio: I also love that movie. John Goodman is farking great. Even when confronted by a cartoon ninja, he'll growl "you come in here, and threaten MY family?" in a scarily brutal way.

-would enjoy a cut where every scene of Speed's little brother and the monkey are deleted-

THESE. I love the movie to death, but it's over 2 hours long! Spritle and Chim-chim (sp?) ruin most scenes they're in. Especially the end of the last race. Bah!

The climax is one of the best reflections on Wu Wei in modern cinema. That alone doesn't make it a masterpiece, but if more filmmakers start taking cues from Taoist art & storytelling then this movie will be relevant for a very long time--and it won't have to do with the CGI.

The best send - up of the old Speed Racer cartoon is a sick and twisted short called Fast Driver.

I was not an avid viewer of the original series, but I concur with many here-it was a great movie.

Right away it clicked that, while there was live action, I was still watching a cartoon. A wonderfully imagined, beautifully rendered cartoon. The story was just the right kind of opera ridiculous and the acting was played straight and pitch perfect.

Rubber Biscuit: One of my favorite movies of recent years. People will come around. That's an excellent movie.

Yup. It is a perfect example of family-friendly action movies. The Wachowski's really have this knack for getting the essence of a work and a genre exactly, perfectly right down to the most mundane details, and it really shows through in Speed Racer. And yeah, it was also really fun to watch. Sure there's schlock in it, but people gotta realize; family action movies are schlocky! Action detective anime series are schlocky! A Speed Racer without schlock is like a Lupin movie without proudly displayed breasts, double-entendres, and raunchy sight gags.

What matters is that the Wachowski's did schlock well. In doing it well, they let the audience appreciate it in a host of ways; nostalgically, ironically for its crappiness, sincerely for its well-done crappiness, thematically as genre appreciation, technically for the skill it takes to be bad without being off-putting, holistically as part of a seamless work. And that's not even considering all the other great things about the film; the composition, the editing, the sound-work, the costuming, the music, the writing, the excellent balancing of opposing moralities, the subtle digs at bs nostalgia for oppressive social norms hidden behind celebration of them. Like the first Matrix, or Sherlock Holmes, or Death Proof, it's one of those films that is a textbook example of both a genre and an approach to film-making.
