This looks like it good be a good remake a la Dawn of the Dead instead of that piece of shiat Total Recall et al.

Maybe it's just the way the trailer is cut but there doesn't seem to be any comedy in this one

I approve. The first one was so low quality and had such terrible acting that having a new one is warranted.

Of course, when I saw the first one in the theater I was scared shiatless and very impressed once the scary shiat started happening, low-budget or no.

They should absolutely NOT remake the sequels though. Raimi had more money for those and they stand up just fine.

This is a remake of the first film, which wasn't a comedy. You're thinking of Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness.

Yeah. The first one wasn't a comedy, unless you count how many times Bruce Campbell got trapped under something.

Really? I remember the comedy in 2 being more over the top, but I thought there was still some dark comedy in 1. I could've sworn a number of "jokes" were recycled from 1 to 2. I mean, Evil Dead 2 was really more of a remake than a sequel. Could be wrong though. I've only seen Evil Dead 1 once.

I guess my point was more that you, or at least I, would describe Evil Dead II and AOD as a horror comedy movie whereas I would call the first Evil Dead a horror movie.

But what the hell do I know, I could be way off base.

The original Evil Dead stood out to me, it was unique. This one just seems generic, like it could be any other horror movie. It doesn't look bad, it just doesn't look like it has the specialness of the original.

Yeah, I think we're splitting hairs over it. I think of Evil Dead II as a remake of the first one that is just more over the top and funny. I'd definitely agree that the original Evil Dead is the closest of the three to a pure horror movie.

It's half a remake. They couldn't get the rights to their own film to do a recap, so they just reshot. But about halfway through, it goes in a new direction.

I think "A Cabin in the Woods" might have put the kibosh on horror movies about cabins in the woods. And the girl has to cut her hand off with an electric knife instead of a chainsaw? That's sexist.

As a fan of the original three, I'm going to watch this one, hopefully with my friend who's also a big fan.

Trailer makes it weird seeing familiar ED stuff but with larger production values, and more then three guys torturing "actors" and themselves out in the woods. I'm glad that the classic is in this movie even though its supposed to be modern day and there's not too many '73 88's out there.

2012-10-25 04:47:03 AM
is it just coincidence or have film makers been making horror movies with huge spaces of black or darkness in the frame since big arse TVs became the household typical? can someone explain this to me?

2012-10-25 05:02:44 AM
ED2 is a remakequel.

If you like Army of Darkness, it's worth seeing (at least) ED2. Similar humor, and honestly a lot of the humor comes from what Ash went through in that movie. A hero's journey to insanity, if you will.

As to the new remake, I really hope that

#1 the musical cues are a bit more subdued than in the trailer. Horror is more effective with bits of silence / truly creepy music

#2 they don't go overboard with exposition. the rule of 'show, don't tell' is getting violated with a tree limb in the trailer

#3 also i hope that the movie sells more tickets than Gone with the Wind

Understandable. However, as far as horror films go, the Evil Dead could benefit from a refresh in terms of special effects. This isn't like Halloween where it's a guy in a mask killing people and the atmosphere is what gave the original it's lasting impression. There are enough over the top gags (Rammi's words for effect shots if I'm recalling the commentary correctly) in the original that can be pulled off so much better these days.

The original budget was under $400k (according to IMDb) and they did a hell of a job creating such a memorable movie with what little they had. Applying a proper budget for effects might be worth it. Besides, Campbell, Tapert and Rammi are all producers on it. If this was a remake with some nameless studio execs running the show I'd be more concerned. Finding out they were all involved helped me get past the initial cringe.

Great horror movies are important cathartic devices. There's nothing wrong with making a horror movie, but after Whedon's desconstruction you've got some brass to release exactly the kind of film that he savaged. Let the cabins rot quietly, unless you have something new to offer.

Leave it to Whedon to take all the obvious movie cliches and make something unique out of it. Not scary, but fun and unique.

Umm, no, it looks like YOU missed the point of the first one, Evil Dead was supposed to be a horror movie. Not a slapstick horror movie like the 2nd one or a total comedy like the third. Now, I'm not saying that the first one isn't unintentionally hilarious, but it was definitely supposed to be a "serious" movie.

I really can't agree with that. Everything about the construction of the movie was brutal against horror cliches, and the audience. The elder gods were horror movie fans. Whedon was saying that all the shiatty horror movie elements are there because the fans reject films that don't check the right boxes in the right order.

Everyone is a victim in the process - the actors, the production team, the directors - victimizing themselves to please the almighty viewers.

I completely disagree. That film was the definition of "affectionate parody." It was to horror what Galaxy Quest is to Star Trek.

I really can't agree with that. Everything about the construction of the movie was brutal against horror cliches, and the audience. The elder gods were horror movie fans. Whedon was saying that all the shiatty horror movie elements are there because the fans reject films that don't check the right boxes in the right order.

Interesting take on it. I thought the movie was great though. Nice to see a totally different take on a cliched story.

AshCampbell: Into

Thanks!

Yes, Yes I will see this. I like how it is not a 'remake'. Almost a sequel, not quite. When he first opens the book it is written inside

Don't say it
Don't Write it
Don't hear it

To me that means it is 30 or so years later.

Found this while cruising the IMDB message boards. Now this is some scary shizzle!

!!Warning!!
May contain potential movie spoilers or it just might be some random AW's shot at his/her 15 minutes. Either way, the-germanator2's posts are the nightmare inducing ones.

I think this is actually referring to the notion of remaking "Evil Dead."

I've got $100 riding on mermen.

GREAT movie

Seconded. I absolutely adore this movie. Saw it twice in theaters and I've seen it twice more since the DVD release.

That being said, I'm REALLY looking forward to this movie. It actually looks...well...good. The thought of a new and improved tree-rape has me giddy with excitement.

Ooooooohhhh that may be even better. Stick it to those people.

Raimi and Campbell are involved, I am in.

antidisestablishmentarianism: Hoban Washburne: I've only seen Evil Dead 1 once.

Really? That used to be the first movie I would watch with new girlfriends for a few years. All digitally remastered and shiat so the surround sound actually enhanced the flick.

Really? I've always been apprehensive about showing that to girlfriends (at least, it wouldn't be the first movie I'd show them) simply because of the tree rape scene.

As I told my friend, "It looks like fail and Nickelback".

Know Bruce, know Evil Dead. No Bruce, no Evil Dead.

Bruce himself has endorsed it, though that is probably because he is getting a lot of money. I love the man, but it's obvious from his career that he will do just about anything for money.

/but it allows him to do awesome stuff like Bubba Ho-tep, so it's cool
